One of the primary objects of the invention is to increase the security and rigidity of the connection between the engine structure and the frame structure of a locomotive.
Another object of the invention is to relieve the ordinary securing means, such as the securing bolts which connect the engine mechanism to the main frame, of shearing or other stresses set up by the working of the engines under steam pressure or due to shocks in service.
A further object of the invention is to insure the maintenance of proper alignment of the engine parts when assembled on the frame.
More specifically the invention contemplates the provision of means for preventing displacement, particularly longitudinally of the main frame, of the cylinder and valvechest castings secured thereto, and the reduction or elimination of shearing stresses on the securing bolts.
How I attain the foregoing objects and advantages, together with such. others as are incident to the invention or will occur to those skilled in the art, will clearly appear in the following description, taken together with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a fragmentary elevational view, with parts in section, taken from the inner side of a side frame member of a locomotive, and illustrating, partly in outline, an engine casting mounted on the frame member in accordance with my invention;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary view taken from the right of Fig. 1;
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view of Fig. 1;
Figure 4 is a view similar to Fig. 1, illustrating a modification of the invention; and
Figure 5 is a bottom plan view of Fig. 4.
Referring now to Figs. 1, 2 and 3, it will be seen that I have illustrated a portion of the front end of a main longitudinal frame member 2 of a locomotive, the rear portion of which divides, at 3, 3, in a manner well 1, 1928. Serial-No. 303,456.
side of frame 2, a horizontal member 10 which i may rest on top of the frame, and transverse stiffening webs 11. A number of holes 12 are drilled through the securing plate 9 and frame 2 for the insertion of the usual securing bolts or other means to prevent lateral displacement of the engine parts with respect to the frame.
On the engine casting and frame, respectively, I provide, as by casting and subsequent machining, a pair of substantially ver- -7o tical lugs 13 and a pair of key-way slots 14, forming a means of interlocking the engine with the frame as against longitudinal displacement. Keying means, such as tapered or wedge-shaped keys 15, are driven up tight in said key-ways, one in front of one, lug 13, and the other to the rear of the other lug 13. In addition I may provide a horizontal key 16, which may conveniently be located between an end portion 17 of the casting and a shoulder 18 on the frame. The lug devices, as seen best in Figs. 1 and 3, are preferably located adjacent the strengthening ribs or webs 11.
In Figs. 4 and 5 I have illustrated a modification in which the frame 2a carries, in a similar Way, the casting 8a, with its members 9a and 10a and webs 11a, but in this instance the lugs 13a are formed on the frame member, the keyand lug-receiving slots 1 1a are formed on the saddle casting, and the keys 15a are both positioned to the rear of the lugs. In addition, fillets or webs 11?) are provided on the casting adjacent the key-way slots. The horizontal key 16a is also here employed.
It is, evident that other modifications may be made; suchas the provision of key-ways on both members, with keys interlocking them; or the substitution of keys of taperedbolt, or other, forms; or alteration of the location, position, or number, of the interlooking or securing devices here shown.
The invention, it will now be seen, pro- Vides for the firm interlocking of the engine and frame structures, the prevention of displacement of the parts under stress of the working of the pistons in the cylinders or under impacts transmitted from the bumper, and for relieving the ordinary securing means of part or all of the stresses set up between engine and frame in a plane'lying longitudinally of the locomotive.
lVhat I claim is 1. Locomotive construction including a main frame member, a cylinder structure having a vertical flange, said frame member being extended along the length of said cylinder and abutting said flange member, bolting means securing said flange against the side of said frame member, and keying means between said structure and said main frame member disposed intermediate the bolting means.
2. Locomotive. construction including a main frame member, a cylinder structure having a vertical flange, said frame member being extended along the length of said cylinder and abutting said flange member, bolting means securing said flange against the side of said frame member, and keying means be tween said structure and said main frame member disposed intermediate the bolting means, said keying means including a relatively wide slot in flat face of one of the members, a narrower lug on a flat face of the other member extending into said slot, and a key in the slot abutting said lug.
3. Locomotive construction including a frame member, acylinder structure having a vertical flange extended substantially the length of the cylinder and abutting said frame member, bolting means securing said flange against the side of said frame memher, and keying means between said structure and said frame member disposed intermediate the bolting means, together with a reenforcing rib on the cylinder structure adjacent the keying means and intermediate the bolting means. 4:. Locomotive construction including a main frame member, a cylinder structure having a vertical flange, said frame member being extended along the length of said cylinder and abutting said flange member, bolting means securing said flange against the side of said frame member, andkeying means between said structure and said main frame member disposed intermediate the bolting means and positioned to relieve the bolting means on each side thereof of stresses endwise of the frame.
5. Locomotive construction including a main frame member, a cylinder structure having a vertical flange abutting a side'of said main frame member and positioned somewhat rearwardly of the front end of the latter, keying means between said flange and said frame member relatively positioning them longitudinally of the frame member, and transverse securing bolts at each side of the keying means extending through the flange and the main frame member and holding them in tight contact laterally.
6. Locomotive construction including a frame member, a cylinder structure having a Vertical flange abutting a side of said frame member, keying means between said flange and said frame member relatively positioning them longitudinally of the frame member, and transverse securing bolts at each side of the keying means extendingthrough the flange and the frame member and holding them in tight'contact laterally, said cylinder structure including an inward extension forming a saddle and lying across the top of the frame member.
