Beit known that I, IRA O. WRIGHT, a citizen of the United States`,jresiding at the city of Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Draft Rigging; and I dov hereby declare the following to be a full,
and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to draft rigging for railway cars and, generally stated, consists of a center sill tie casting provided with stop members which latter a movable element` of the draft rigging gear is designed to engage- The principal feature of the present inrevision ofl a coinbined stop and tie casting connected to the s aced center sills, said casting having a p urality of bosses acting to space the castin wardly from said sills, said bosses also being arranged to receive the rivet lmeans for connecting the casting to the centersills. Another feature of my invention is to provide a combined center sill tie and stop member of maximum strength value for the amount of lmaterial used, the bosses Yformed on said member being advantageously disposed for firmly. connecting the casting to the sills in effectively resisting the forces to whichthe' car underframe is' subjected.
A vfurther feature of the invention is to provide strong and durable means for transmitting the bu'ing and draft strains to the center sills, said` means including center ller and stop members inwardl spaced from the center sills and arrange for-engagement by the respective forward andv casting.

The stop member 5 comprises a combined center liller, tie and stop casting connected to the draft sills by means of the rivets 8. Stop Ylugs 9 are provided on said member and are adapted to be engaged .by the rear follower 10 of the cushioning mechanism, the latter beingdiagrammatically shown in dot 'and 'dash lines, as indicated `in Figure 2.
The ymeans for spacing the stop casting 6 inwardly of the center sills and at the same time providing for its firm connection thereto,r consists of 'a series of longitudinally disposed 11, and other vertically arthe rivets 8. The engaging faces of the bosses firmly abut against the inner faces of the draft sills, and the relative depth of said bosses determines the spacing of the stop casting inwardly from the sills, as will be understood. The stop members or lugs 9 cooperating with the rear follower 10, are each reinforced by webs or flanges 13 pro jecting inwardly from the side walls 14 and forwardly of the casting, said flanges acting to brace the stops. I have located'the majority of the bosses 11 longitudinally of the casting and at points preferably between the inwardly projecting reinforcing flanges 13 so as to permit of the convenient insertion of the rivet connecting means, and to also advantageously obtain the additional reinforcing values of the bosses immediately' adjacent the flanges 13. The vertical bosses 12 are preferably arranged at or near the rear of the stop being vertical y arranged from the longitudinal rows through the bosses 11.

Coo eratively associated with and arrange between the inner faces of the draft sills and the outer faces oi the wall portions 14 of the stop casting is a reinforcing means composed of an angle bar 15, the vertical llange 16 thereof extending upwardly between the inner face of the center sill and the oiset portion of the wall of the stop member, and a horizontal flange 17 of said angle bar projecting beneath an otiset ortion formed in the door of the sto casting. The angle bar extends the entire length of the stop member, and is preferably designed to continue rearwardly of the center sills. llhe horizontal flange 17 is cut away at an angle, as indicated at 18, thereby pro- Viding for the necessary clearance for thc rear end of the yoke extending between the stop lugs 9. The rivets 8 of the lowermost row pass through the reinforcing bar 15 and firmly unite the walls of the stop member with the center sills.
A similarly reinforced stop member 19 is connected by means of rivets 20 to the forward ends of the draft sills, said member including the striking casting 21 and the carr iron support 22. The forward end of t e draft rigging recess is closed bythe stop castin 19, which serves to :firmly connect the dg draft rigging. The vertical walls of the Stop member 19 ferm cheek plates 23, the
rear faces thereof providing stop lugs 24 casting, the attaching rivets raft sills at this point of the Maasai with which the forward follower, 25 of the cushioning mechanism is designed to engage.` Bosses 26 are provided on the outerv faces of the cheek plates andere adapted to engage with the inner faces of the center sills, said bosses acting to space the yatop member inwardly of the sills, as shown. Rivets 20 rigidly connect the front stop member 19 to the center sills, said rivets passing through the bosses 26. The upper boss extends substantially the length of the casting and the lower boss terminatesback of the forward end of said upper boss, as shown, the rear ends of each boss being arranged in close proximity to the stop lugs 24 of the cheek plates :for reinorcing'the latter. The several portions forming the stop member 19 are all formed integral, thereby providing a one-piece or unitary member which can be easil connected te the forward ends of the dra t sills.
Each cheek larly the stop lug 24 formed thereon, isreinforced by means of a top web portion 28 extending from the striking casting tothe stop lug, the central portion of said web being partly cut away, as shown in Figure 1. A series of anges or webs 29 entend rearwardly of the casting uniting the side walls' with the stop lugs, the inner faces of said flanges being cut away` or inclined, as shown, to provide lateral clearance for the yoke head. Each cheek plate is provided with a relativelylong key slot 30, said slot regis tering with a similar slot 31 formed in each center sill. through said slots and is arranged to connect the coupler 33 with the forward end of the yoke 34. Slots 35 are provided in the wall portions of the hooded head of the yoke, thereby permitting relative movement of the key therein, but said slots are shorter than the slots in the cheek plates, as shown,

In a draft rigging, the combination with spaced center sills, of a cou le:1 and yoke, cushioning mechanism inclucing forward and rear followers, stop members connected to said center sills, and means including continuous longitudinally extending bosses provided on said stop members contacting the inner faces of the sills forspacing said members therefrom, said bosses having a plurality of openings adapted to receive rivets for connect-ing the stop members to the sills and being arranged' to provide uninterrupted cross sectional areas of maximum thickness longitudinally disposed in the lines of greatest stress imparted to the rivet connectlons.

In a` draft rigging, the combination with spaced center sills, of a cushioning l mechanism, a coupler and yoke, means connecting said coupler and yoke, a one-piece stop casting connecting said center sills, said casting having wall portions inwardly spaced from said sills, sill engaging bosses on said wall portions each provided'with a plurality of openings, and rivet means passing through said openings and wall portions folil' connecting the stop casting to the center si s.
8. In a draft rigging, the combination 4with spaced center sills` of a cushioningl mechanism, a coupler and yoke, means connecting said coupler and yoke, a unitary stop casting connecting the center sills, said casting having wall portions, bosses on said wall portions adapted to inwardly s ace the body of the casting from the sills, sa1d bosses also acting to reinforce said wall portions, and rivet means for connecting said stop casting to said center sills.
9. In a draft rigging, the combination with spaced draft sills, of cushioning mech# spacing the body of the casting inwardly of the sills, said bosses acting to reinforce said wall sections and formed with a plurality of openings, and rivet means connecting said stop casting to the center sills, said rivet means extending through said bosses and wall sections intermediate said reinforcing webs.
10. In a draft rigging, the combination with spaced draft sills, of a cushioning mechanism including a follower, a yoke and coupler, means connecting said yoke and coupler, and a stop castiiw having integral wall sections forming stop members for said follower, said Wall sections beingr provided with a series of longitudinallyT disposed bosses each of which is arranged to receive a plurality of rivet means and adapted to space the stop members inwardly of the center sills.
11. A stop casting for draft rigging adapted to bridge and unite the spaced center sills thereof, said casting comprising wall portions, and a plurality of elongated rivet receiving bosses projecting from said Wall portions for contacting the inner face of said center sills, said bosses acting to inwardly space the body of the stop casting from said sills and reinforce the same.
12. A stop casting for draft rigging arranged to bridge and unite spaced center sills, said casting including integral wall sections formed with stp portions, inwardand forwardly exten ing flanges for relnforcing said Wall sections and,A stop portions, and a series of elongated rivet receivfing bosses provided upon the opposite sides of said wall sections and arranged intermediate said reinforcing flanges, the bosses upon the outer faces of said walls acting to inwardly space the body of the casting from the center sills.
