My invention relates to fountains and more particularly to water fountains used for servicing automobiles and like vehicles at filling stations, the principal object of my invention being to provide a fountain that can be readily changed from higher to lower elevations or vice versaaccording to weather conditions to eliminate freezing of water in the fountain.
A further object of this invention is to provide an apparatus of this character that of fers no obstruction and that is substantially concealed when not in use. 7
In accomplishing these and other objects of my invention I have provided improved details of structure, the preferred form of which is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a central vertical section of the container installed below the surface of the ground and provided with an adjustable hose support.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary section 011 the line 2-2 Fig. 3.
Fig. 3 is a cross section of the container on the line 3-3 Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a plan View of the support.
Referring more in detail to the drawings:
1 designates a cylindrical container installed in a hole 2 drilled into the ground, and extending slightly above the ground surface through an opening 3 in a concrete floor 4.
An inlet pipe 5, buried in the ground below freezing depth, extends through an opening 6 in the container, being secured therein by opposite nuts 7 and 8 and provided with a valve 9 for controlling flow of liquid through the pipe.
Attached to a nozzle 10 of the valve, is a flexible hose 11, used for servicing water to vehicles at filling stations or for other purposes, and sustained in variable elevated condition as will now be described.
The container is provided at its upper end with equally spaced longitudinal slots 12.
having lateral notches 13 and 14 near their upper ends and at their extreme lower ends respectively.
Guard channels 15 aligning with the longitudinal slots and spaced therefrom are pro- 1930. Serial-No. 451,237.
vided with arcuate flanges 16 fixed to the outer surface of the container by welding or the like as indicated at. 17.
Movable in the container is a plate. or support 18 slightly smaller in diameter than the container to permitfreedom of movement therein, outwardly projecting lugs 19 on the plate being. adapted to be moved vertically in the slots and to engage either of the notches, 13 or 1 1 so that the plate may be moved and sustained in either elevated or lowered position as desired, loops 20 being provided in the container adjacent the notches for receiving pins 21 to securely retain the plate inselected position.
In order ,to facilitate passage of the conduit'through the plate, an opening 22 is provided therein in the form of a cross, having sets of paired ears 23 and 24 each pair rotatably receiving a grooved roller25, mounted therebetween on a cross pin 26, the relation of the rollers being such that a substantially circular"opening 27 is formed thereby for receiving the conduit.
Fixed onthe conduit, adj
acent its upper end, is a "spherical supporting member 28,
adapted to rest on the rollers when the hose Y is moved to retracted position bya weight 29 suspended from the conduit'by a pulley 30. Fixed to the extreme outer end of the so conduit and adjacent the spherical member 28, is a faucet 81 for delivering water into radiators or the like.
Alid 32 may be hinged to the container as'indicated at 3 3 to cover the device when 85 not. in use. i
Assuming an apparatus to be constructed and assembled as described, the supporting plate'may be moved to lowered position in thenotches 14L and fixed therein by the pin 21 during the winter months to prevent freezing of the water in the faucet and container; During the warmer seasons, however, the'supporting plate is moved to the upper and more accessible positions in the 90 I container provided by the notches 13.
WVhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: e V
1. In apparatus of the character described, a container, an inlet pipe extending into the container, a movable support in the container, means for selectively retaining the support at diflerent elevations in the container, and a flexible conduit having one end connected to the inlet pipe and the opposite end normally sustained by said support.
n 2. In apparatus of the character described, a container, an inlet pipe extending into the container, a movable support inthe container, means 'l'er selectively retaining the support at different elevations in the container, means for securing the support in selected position, and a flexible conduit'havingone end connected to the inlet pipe and the opposite end normally sustained by said support.
3. In apparatus of the character described, a container having longitudinal guide slots and lateral notches "leading: from said slots, a movable support in the container having projecting lugs adapted for movement in said slots and for seating in said notches, an inlet pipe extending into the container, and a flexible'conduit having one end attached to the pipe and the opposite end normally sustainedhy said support.
4, In apparatus of the character described, a container having longitudinal guide slots and lateral notches leading from said slots, guard channels aligning with the slots and fixed to the container, a movable support in the container having projecting lugs adapted for movement in said slots and in the clrannels and for seating in said notches, an inlet pipe extending into the container, and a fiexible conduit having one end attached to the pipe and the opposite end adapted to be sustained by said support.
5. In apparatus of the character described, a container having longitudinal guide slots and lateral notches leading from said slots, guard channels aligning With the slots and fixed to the container, a movable support in the container having projecting lugs adapted for movement in said slots and in the channels and for seating in said notches, means :t'or' retaining the lugs in said notches, an inlet pipe extending into the container, a flexible conduit 11 ving one end attached to the pipe and the opposite end adapted to be sustained by the support, and means for retracting the conduit into the container. 7
6. In apparatus ofthe character described, a container, a movable support in thecontainer having an opening and rollers surrounding the openingj means for selectively retaining the support at diiferent elevations in the container, an inlet pipe extending into the container, a'flexible conduit having one end attached to the pipe and the opposite end movable through said opening in the support, and means adjacent the free end of the conduit for sustaining said opposite end of the conduit on the support. I
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature.
