The present invention relatesto power transferrifi'g or transmitting means or the like.
Among the objects ofthe invention isto rovide a novel mechanism for transferring and directing or imparting power and motion through suitable connecting elements, such as cables, or the like to jmeans to be operatedesuch as oscillating mining convey- 16 ors or the li the Power being derived from a central source of power. I p
The invention is particularly adaptedfor use with'mining conveyors, such as those of theo'sci'llating shovel, pan" or flight type and arranged" with a series in a" main passage and auxiliary or branch or coritributary series in, branch or side passages or mine rooms, all so related to deliver mined mater'ial to'the ,7 main series which in turndelivers the mate'- rial to'c'a'rs or the like, at some suitable delivery part of the mihe, such'as at the mouth therof. To have' independent and separate operating Ineans'at different points in the ,.mine, for operating each series of flights, 2'5" would be inconvenient, lv; a V r The present invention" comprehends the avoidance of such difii'cu'lties by using a single vsource of power, and connecting the series impractical and flights. Atthe" junction of aseries with flanother,m eans being provided for transferring or diverting a part of thepower being trans '5" mitted to a series, to theother series which maybemeh' oil or radiate from the junction ,in my of anumber of angular directions.v
In a specific embodiment illustrative of the ,irivfentionjsjuch a device" comprises a circular bell crask merab1y carriedby anupright member; as jack, and having a-rim upon upon which are clampihgmeans adaptedto engage" the rim at any point, the clamping means being adaptedifor engaging power 56 stantially' linally.
"of flights suitable power transmittihg elements, such as cables' orth'e like to such,
the tW O SIClQS or sect ons of the cable connected' to clamping devices adjustably con transmitting cables. Th'e'clainps are prefsections and let p on the other and vice" versa, so that there is a to-and-fro movement of the cable along the length thereof. One of these cablesmay be connected at diflerent points to' each flightof the series so that the pull of the cable will be independently effecti'veon' each; flight at the connection thereof. Where the cable sections pass by side or branch passage or rooms, the crank means of the present invention is located, and the clamps thereof connected to the cable sections, at'suchlo'cus. Thus, as the cable sec tions are moved lineally in opposite directioris and reason of their being adjustably connected oppositely around the rim of the crank device, the latter is simultaneously swung or angularly moved to and fro with the to-andne'jcted oppositely on the rim of the crank device. e p
whenever conveyors or like mechanism of the type described is used, it is often desired to extend the same in'a plurality of lateral directions anclto drive the entire mechanismfrom: aceiitral'source of power. The present invention relates to suitable mechanism fordirectingmovement in a power transmitting" elementf froma main conveyor section to similar conveyors extending laterally thereto and driven by like power transmitting Velemerit for impaiging a movement to theindi- V vidual pansor ightsthereon in such a manner as to progressively cause the material to move toward the main conveyor. 4 In a specific embodiment selected to illustrate the invention, a circular bell crank is rotatably carried by a shaft at the unction of the main conveyor and a similar conveyor extending laterally at any angle there- The cableof the main conveyor is connected at a given point of the rim of the crank while a similar cable of the laterally extending conveyor is attached to another point on that rim. As the oscillating movements aregimparted to the main cable from the centrai power mechanism, they are transmitted about the bell crank to the cable connected to the pansror flights of the laterally extending conveyor. The latter cable imparts similar oscillating movements to the latter conveyor.
A further object of the invention is to provide novel connecting means for the cables. In the specific embodiment selected to disclose the lnvention, adanip'su port is pro- 7 vided in which a clamp is pivota lly mounted,
and which has bifurcated body portion engaging the rim of the crank member and adjustably positioned about such rim. A pin, bolt or the like passing through the support and engaging the rim of the movable member holdsthe support substantially inrigid position. i i
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel device to which a power transmitting element may be attached at any point thereon andin any angular relation to a similar transmitting element communicating with a central power mechanism. 7
Another object ofthe invention is to provide a. novel device which may be readily and easily connectedto a shaft or the like which is stably positioned and which cannot be easily moved under the operating stresses but which can be readily set in place and taken down when desired. The invention comprehends a device comprising a two part casting, each part of which maybe positioned about a shaft, such as a jack in a mine or some other shoring means. These parts may be bolted or connected together by any other suitable means. i
. The invention further comprehends the construction of a novel clamping device comprising cable gripping parts, one of such parts; being provided with pivotal means for pivotally supporting the device. The gripping parts oftheclamping device are provide with reversely curved surfaces and are lined or covered with soft material to present injury to the cable or "similar power transmitting element engaged thereby. The curved surfaces of the clamp cause the element to bend and effectively grip the same.
'Other objects, features, capabilities and advantages are comprehended by the invention as will later appear, and as are, inherently possessed thereby.
Referring to the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a device constructed in accordance with the invention, and
Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view taken in the plane represented by line 22 in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
Referring now more in detail to the drawings', the embodiment selected to disclose the invention, comprises a two part circular bell crank 1, fulcrumed or pivoted to a shaft 2 of a jack or other shoring means placed at the junction point of a main shaft and a laterally extending or branch shaft in a mine. An endless cable 3 passes about a sheave pulley or the like at the end of the shaft and is connected to a mechanism at a central source of power, which mechanism produces a reciprocal jerking movement in the cable, which in turn is transmitted to a. series of pans or flights of the conveyor positioned in the main The two-part circular bell crank comprises two castings 1 of similar construction, and each is provided with a hub part 5 positioned about the shaft 2 and pivotally mounted thereon. Spokes 6 extend radially outwardly from the hub and are connected to a circular rim 7 Lugs 8 are provided which extend inwardly from the ends of the semi-circumferential portions of the castings 4. In an assembled position, bolts 9 passing through the lugs 8 and bolts 10 passing through the hub 5, connect and hold the casting parts 4 in a pivotal position about the shaft 2. Spaced bolt holes 11 are provided about the rim of the bell crank. Spaced notches 12 are also provided about the periphery of the rim 7 and intermediate or in staggered relation with the bolt holes 11, the utility of which will later more fully appear.
A clamp support 12 is provided with a bifurcated portion 18, which slidably engages the rim 7 of the bell crank 1. The bifurcated portion 13 is provided with bolt holes 1 1, similarly spaced as the bolt holes 11 on the rim 7 of the crank bell 1. This support is adjustable around the rim 7 and is held in any of its selected positions by bolts 15 passing through holes 14 of the bifurcated portion 13 and a pair of holes 11 on the rim 7 A lock pin 16 passing through another hole in the'bifurcated portion 13, engages one of the notches 12 on the periphery of the rim 7 to lock and rigidly hold the support 12 to the crank bell. The outwardly extending portion of the support 12 is bifurcated as at 17 and carries a clamp 18. A headed pin 19 passes through the bifurcated end portion 17 and through the clamp 18 and is held in position by a washer 19 and cotter pin 20, pin 19 pivotally positions the clamp 18 in the bifurcated end portion 17 The cable or power transmitting element 3 is gripped by the clamp 18 and the jerking movements occurring in the cable 3 are transmitted through the clamping mechanism to produce an oscillating or alternate rotary movement in the bell crank. A similar clamping device as the one described, is provided and may be positioned diametrically opposite thereto on the rim 7 to engage and grip the other side or section of the endless power transmitting element or cable 3. A clamp mechanism 21 of similar construction to the clamp mechanism previously described, is connected to the rim 7 of the bell crank at any given point for connection with a cable This cable is cennected to the pans or flights of a flexible conveyor which extends laterally or branches off at any angle to the main conveyor. A similar clampin mechanism may be provided and positioned diametricallyopposite to the clamping mech anism 21, for engaging and gripping the other side or section of the endless cable or power transmitting element 22.
It will be seen that the jerking movements occurring in the power transmitting element 3 will be transferred through the bell crank 1, to the power transmitting element 22 to produce like jerking movements therein which are in turn transferred to the pans or flights of the laterally extending conveyor. The adjustable feature of these clamping devices or mechanisms permit the use of such a device as herein described at a junction point where the conveyor branches or extends laterally to the main conveyor at any angle.
'VVhile I have herein described and upon the drawings shown an illustrative embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited thereto, but comprehends other constructions, features, details and arrangements of parts without departing from the spirit thereof.
