The garbage is introduced into the inner receptacle or containerthrough itsopen' top and when-thecover10 is placed in position the upper end is closed substantially" air-tight: The inner container ispr0= vided with an o'penin'gll which permits the products of combustion to pass from the in= ner container into the: sp ace" between: it and the'outer shell or jacket. This opening is located near thetop of the'apparatus. The inner'contain'er is also provided'witli acollar for extension 12: which extends outwardly through'the-wall'of the-outerjacket andpro vides-an openingfor' the insertion of a burner or burners 1'3: These burners may be de signed for use ofoil-inwhich'case'they are of the'injector type or if gasis-used as a fuel they are preferably of the Bunsen type.
Between'the inneran'dthe outer shells are located two baffles or division plates l twhich extend'fromthe' cover 8-d0wnwardly and'terminate a short distance above the top of the base 2 leaving'openings for'the passage-ofthe products of combustion under the-lower ends of: the same. Thesebaflies arelocated on opposite sides of the incinerator and divide the space'bet'weenthe two shells into two chambers. The opening 11 admits the productsof combustion into' one chamber from which they pass downwardly under the lower ends of the baflle plates and thence upwardly to the-flue connection 9; The baflies 14 may be cast integral with theinner shell I asindicated in Fig. 4 and may be attached to the outer shell by means of suitable rivets or screws as indicated at 15. It will be noted that the opening 11 and the collar or extension 12 for the reception of the burners and the door 6 are located on one side which may be termed the front of the incinerator and the.
flue outlet 9 is located on the opposite side.
The incinerator may be made either wholely of cast or wrought iron or other suitable metals but it has been found desirable to make the inner container, the base and the top and cover of cast iron and the outer shell or jacket of wrought iron. The battle plates of course may be made as separate elements and suitably attached to the inner container and the outer shell. The top cover 8 and thebase may be held together by means of rods or bolts in any suitable manner.
In the operation of the incinerator the earbage is placed in the inner container and the cover 10 closed. The burners are then nited and ignite the garbage in the inner container. It will be apparent that that portion of the container 1 adjacent the burners and particularly the lower "portion. of the container will be heated to an extremely high temperature by reason of the burners and by reason ofthe heat developed by the combustion of the garbage. The products of combustion 'which are charged with objectionable and offensive odors it permitted to escape are conducted through the openin 11 downwardly over be highly heated Portion of the outside of the inner container, under the lower ends of the baflles l I and thence upwardly to the flue 9. The in passing from the highly heated portion of the inner container on their way to the flue will be subjected to such a. temperature as to substantially eliminate the oli'ensive odors produced thereby. It will thus be seen that a new process for the elimination of oiiensive odors arising from burning garbage has been devised as indicated above. The gases which pass through the opening 11 are passed di rectly over the highlyrheated lower portion of the inner container which subjects them to such temperature as to practically elin inate the oiiensive odors arising therefrom.
It will be apparent that theproducts of combustion of the burning garbage are not allowed to mix with air until they have been subjected tothe re-heating process by be ng forced to pass in close contact with the l ighly heated lower portion of the inner container. In fact the products of combustion do not receive any air until they reach the outlet 9 except of course what. is introduced through the connection 12 and passes upwardly through the burning garbage.
In the apparatus described the gases formed by the combustion of the garbage are brought into contact with the hot portion of the incinerator and so are re-heated to a point which prevents the discharge of existing offensive odors. It is an essential that the products of combustion be prevented as de' scribed from coming into contact with fresh air such as might come through the grate from the ash pit. For this reason the annula-r space between the container and the outer container 7 is closed substantially air-tight.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various other modifications may be made in my device Without departing from the spirit of my invention and therefore I do not limit myself to what is shown in the drawings and described in the specification but only as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In an incinerator, an inner shell provided with a grate, an outer shell, a cover engaging the upper edges of both said shells, diametrically opposed baflies extending from said cover downwardly between and in contact *ith said shells, a base closing the space between the lower ends of said shells, said battles terminating short of said base, a burner casing extending through the outer shell and into the inner shell above said grate, said inner shell having an opening in its side wall near the top and directly above said burner casing, said outer shell having an outlet opening at its top diametrically opposite said burner casing whereby the products of combustion will be conducted from the inner shell near its top downwards over the heated portion of said inner shell, under the lower ends of said bafiles thence upwardly to said outlet.
