IMPROVEMENT IN HORSESHOE-BLANKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 182,140, dated September 12, 1876; application filed Augnst 21, 1876.
- To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES N. WHITMAN, of Pembroke, in the county of Washington and State of Maine, have inventeda new and Improved Horseshoe-Blank, of which the following is a specification:

My invention consists of a rolled bar of iron or steel, having formed on one side thereof, in process of rolling, calks for the heel and toe, and a nick at the end of each blank, and having upon the reverse side a clip for the toe, and nicks corresponding to those on the calk side.
Ais'a bar of iron or steel rolled by any ordinary process, with heel-calks a a and .the toe-calks b formed upon one side, having the full width of thebar, and projecting from the bar, more or less, according to the length of the calk required. On the reverse side of the bar a, toe-clip O is formed on one edge of the bar, and directly opposite the toe-calk b. Each blank is nicked at d on both sides of the bar, to facilitate cutting the blanks apart. Blanks formed in this way are readily formed into shoes, and channeled and punched to receive the nails. The calks being of the full width of the bar, are more durable and better adapted for use on pavements than those of ordinary shape. The blanks are also more readily manufactured than other forms. The clip, which is a necessity in shoes worn on pavements, is formed with the blank without trouble or expense.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As an improved article of manufacture, a horseshoe-blank, rolled with heel and toe calks, and toe-clip, and nicks at the ends, substantially as herein shown and described.
