Description

Sept. 1, 1931. E. J. MOORE 1,821,393
POWDER PUFF Filed March 7, 1950' A i 1M line -5 of Figure .3, and
Patented Sept. 1, 1931 UNITED STATES amen .nmoonn, or conmus, omo
rownnn. run- Applicatien filed March 7, 1930. Serial No. 484,101.
This invention relates to powder pufis and means for converting the sa e into a folded and compact form to protect and keep the pufl in a sanitary state.
Powder puffs of this kind, which are cus-' tomarily carried in pocketbooks, handbags and the like, become soiled by contact with other articles in the bag andas these puffs usually contain loose powder," the same becomes distributed among the articles contained therein and on the lining of the bag producing an undesirable powder film thereon.
To overcome these objections. a powder puff has been provided which may be folded or collapsed into a bag like form so as to completely cover and seal the puff along its edgizfes and to retain the powder within the p It is another object of the invention to provide a foldable powder puff with a multiple operated fastener, so as to provide for the quick and convenient opening and closing of the puff.
,A further object resides .in the provision of an articleof this kind formed with a handle for carrying the same independent of the handbag or pocketbook.
A still further object is to construct the puff assembly so that theputl' proper may be detached therefrom for cleaning orrenewal purposes. J A
For a further understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is aside elevation of the puff showing the same in a folded position,
Figure 2 is an edge elevation thereof,
Figure 3 is aview showing the pufl in an openposition,
1 Figure 4 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the 'line 4--4 of Figure 1, h
Figure 5 is a similar view taken on Figure 6 is a view showing a slightly modified form of the invention. i- Referring more particularly to the drawings. the numeral; 1 designates the improved powder puff construction in its entirety. The powder receiving member 2 in this instance is of a substantially circular, disk-like sha and hasits edges stitched to a band 3 which in turn is sewed to a fastener carrying strip 4. Sewed to the strip 4 is a circular cover 5 which forms a backing for the puff or memher 2 and which cover may be made of a fine grade of leather. chamois skin or other suitable material. The exterior surface of the cover 5 may also be provided with ornamentations and decorations so as to impart a pleasing appearance to the puff.
Due to the flexibility of these materials the puff may be folded midways as indicated in Figures 1 and4 to produce a semi-circular shape. To retain the puff in its folded position use is madeof a fastening device 6 which is of the well known multiple operated type fastener and which consists of a plurality of closely related hook elements 7 secured to the strip '4. I The elements 7 are interlocked by means of a sliding follower 8, the construction of which is well known and not deemed necessarv to describe. By means of the follower 8-the unit may be opened and closed when desired. It will be noted that the upper face of the member 2 extends in a plane above the fastener elements 7 and that the band 3 surrounds the circular side edge of the puff so as to prevent the flufiy material -9 from becoming caught between the elements 7. The bands! also has a tendency to overlap the elements 7 and prevent iniury to the person using the uni.
The cover 5 may be made of a Twashable material and remain upon the pufi during the cleaning operation thereof or the puff. may be detached by rippingthe same therefrom and another nufl inserted therein.
In the modified form of the invention.
' shown in Figure 6 the strip 4 carrying the fasteners 7 are attached to a foldable frame .10 and to which the cover 5 is also secured. The frame10 ma be formed from metal or ther stifl material and is bent inwardly as rece tion of the outer circular edge of the membe 2. With this construction the puff or member 2 need not be sewed but is held innlace bv wedging the edge of the puff into the groove 12. To further hold the pufi in place the center portion thereof and the cover 5 may be formed with a snap fastener 13 by which the pufl' may be properly positioned within the frame structure and to assure proper folding of the puff. This construction is particularly desirable when the cover 5 is made of material which is not washable wherein the puif may be readily removed and replaced for cleaning or renewal.
If desiredv a handle 14 may be provide by which the puff may be conveniently carried and also serves as a holder while manipulating the sliding element 8 to open and close the puff. The exterior covering 5 may also be formed with pockets 15 for the reception of rouge, lipstick or other articles.
From the foregoing it will be seen that a powder puff has been provided which is of a novel construction and which may be maintained in a clean and sanitary condition. The puif has the advantage of being easily and conveniently operated and due to its simple construction is easy and comparatively economical to manufacture.
What is claimed is:
1. A powder puff of the class described, comprising an outer covering of substantially circular formation. a multiple operated fastener secured to the edge of said covering and adapted when operated to unite said edges and fold said covering upon itself, a powder receiving member positioned on the inner side of said covering, and a band carried by said outer covering and situated between said fastener and said powder receivinc' member, said band extending above said fastener.
2. A powder puff of the class described, comprising an outer covering of substantiallv circular formation. fastening means secured to the periphery of said covering for uniting the edges of said covering when the same is folded upon itself. a powder receiving member positioned on the inner side of said overi and a band situated between said fastening means and said powder receiving member and extendlng above said means.
In testimony whereof I aifix mv signature.
