This invention relates to a coat, one of the objects being to provide a garment of this character utilizing pleats which normally conceal the pocket openings and also constitute means whereby a belt, arranged in a new and novel manner, is attached securely to the garment.

WVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description to proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the

Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a coat the upper portion of which is of the usual design while the lower portion is provided with oppositely disposed back pleats 2 and oppositely disposed front pleats 3. The pleats 2 are extended toward the pleats 3 and a belt 4 is extended through slits formed in the coat at points between the upper and lower ends of the several pleats. The side portions of the belt are exposed outside of the coat between the pleats while the rear portion is concealed between the rear pleats 2. If desired, and as shown in Figure 3 the pleats can be stitched down on to the belt as at 5. The front pleats can also be stitched down on to the belt as illustrated at 6 or, if preferred, the belt can be extended loosely through either or both of the slits 7 provided therefor under the pleats 3 as shown in Figure 4.

By arranging the belt as described the ends thereof which are adapted to be fastened together by a button- 8 or the like can be concealed back of the front portion of the coat when the coat is closed.

Those portions of the pleats below the belt are not tacked or stitched down in place but are left open and back of the front pleats 3 are slits 9 opening into pockets 10 which are arranged between the front portions of the coat and the facings 11. With this arrangement the front pleats constitute closures for the pockets which are thus invisible.

When the belt is on tight about the body only those portions of the coat between front and back pleats will be gathered. The back portion of the coat as well as the front portion thereof will be held smoothly and access can be had conveniently to the pockets at any time;

Instead of providing the pleats with straight edges where they extend across the pocket or across the belt, extensions or tabs 12 can be extended beyond the pleats as shown, for example, in Figure 1 and in Figure 5.

A coat such as herein described can be made for use by men, women and children and will constitute an attractive garment.

It can be made of the regular style if so desired.

What is claimed is:

A coat having front pleats at the sides thereof, there being an elongated slit beneath and concealed by each pleat, a belt extended through the upper portions of the slits and exposed at the sides back 01 the pleats, facings at the front of the coat, and pockets concealed between the front of the coat and the facings and opening through the lower portions of the respective slits, a portion of each pleat concealing the pockets, portions of the pleats being stitched down adjacent to the pocket and belt.
