Another object of our invention is the secur- I ing of a self-oiling pumping mechanism which is protected from dust and is quiet running with a minimum of friction.

Referring by numerals to thedrawings, a vertical motor 5 is here shown driving the worm 6 throughthe vertical shaft 7 Aand, coupling 8. This worm 6 engages a worm wheel 9, preferably mounted midway on a 4horizontal shaft 1Q, carried in the bearing 11 sit uated on either side of the worm wheel 9.
' Beyond the bearing there may be at each end of shaft 10 duplicate cranks 12.- Each crank 12 drives by a connecting rod 13 onto a bell crank 14, swinging freely on a stationary sha ft 15, the connecting rod 13 being attached to bell crank14by means of pin joint 16.
Each Ibell'crank imparts a vertical movement to a piston-like lslide 17, through a short connecting rod18, there being a pin joint19 for the attachment ofthe rod to the bell crank 14, and a pinl joint 20 for the attach-- ment of this rod to the slide 17,. To the top of the two slides 17 is preferably fastened a cross bar 21 which carriesl a connection situated preferably" midway between the two slides for' the rigid attachment of a pump. rod 22 extending downward into the well.
The foregoing comprises a preferred means for'translating the high-speed rotating moof' the electricmotor into a` moderate speed pumps.
A worm 6 is preferably carried 1n a lower f bearing 23 and an upper hearing 24 in a frame 'reciprocatory'motion suitahle'for deep well the pin bearing 15, for the bell crank fulcrum.
This frame 25 is preferably secured, either by bolting, casting or other means, to an upper plate or cover 26, on the upper portion of'wh'ich is mounted thejmotor 5. Plate 26 forms a cover for a containing box 27, which i Cover is preferably oil tight. The box 27 may be partially or almostcom'pletely filled with lubricating oil.' Box 27 preferably has two -hollow projections in which are located elle bell cranks andthe'lower end of the slides endl of-the well pipe may be located a diferential plunger 28.
The plunger 28 preferablyoperates in a differential cylinder 43 which may be attached directly to the pumphead 42. Below the cylinder 43 may be attached any suitable form of outlet itting'snchaas '44 adapted to receive the well pipe at-45, and any suitable form of outlet valve (not shown) Aat 46. An
opening 47 ma be provided, to be closedby any sultable orm of plug or vcover (not shown) to provide access to theoutlet valve. In case the pump is to operate in a locality subject to `heavy frosts, it is desirable to install the diiferential plunger and cylinder and the outlet fitting below ground in which easel y another head (not shown) 'corresponding to head 42 may be provided and the cylinder 43 f 'plunger 28 and into the cylinder space above it. In our device we preferably make the chamber in the pump head 42 with a substantially greater volume than the maximum displacement volume of the plunger 28 and also preferably provide a drain opening in the ottom of pump head 42.` After the cylinder zo. 43 becomes full of this leakage w-ater, any
further leakage will be carried away by the drain 48 and on starting the pump there will be no overflow from the pump head 42 since the chamber islarge Aenough to take care of the maximum amount of water displaced by the plunger 28 from the cylinder 43.
' As a means for centering the well pipe, the lower surface of the pump head'42 is preferably iianged and machined concentric with the cylinder 43 and is preferably arranged to rest on the top edgeof box 27 and fits loosely in a concentrically bored Iout portion of the bottom iiange 50 of cover 26.-
An air compressor 29 may be providedyoperated by bar 30 through arm 31. A side cover 32 and a top cover 33 may be used.
The electric motor may be mounted onto cover 26 by turning down the end plate 34 of the motor to a definite size -sQ as to permit it entering an opening inthe cover 26. The motor may be held down by means of the bolt lugs 35, andvbetween these'A bolt lugs may be situated v openingggs to permit the circulation of air between the end plate 34 and the cover A s 26 so as to facilitate the ventilation ofgthe motor 5. A plate or other suitable device, preferabl of sheet metal,ma'y be providedto prevent -t e dust in this circulating air from getting downinto the working parts. Plate 36 maybe arranged to fit closely around the motor bearing and to draw down with some force against a kseatf 37 .on cthe cover 26.I
The container or boxl 27vr containing the operatlng mechanisni'submerged in lubricatmg o11 may have a drain opening 38, while the entire top is openI suiiiciently so that the entire operating mechanism attached to cover may beinverted into the box. This makes it possible to remove the entire operating mechanismfrom'the box, and to run the same apart from the pump.
Provision may be made for'the return of such -lubricating oil as ma work up past the slide or guides 17 byempl'oying some means such as a passage 39 which leads back into space 40, from which such oil will drain back mechanism depending7 below the cover intol the chamber, said mechanism being supported y by, and removable with thefcover structure,
and including a driving member and a pumpactuating member, said members extcndingf through the cover.l

In a pump operating unit, a chamber having a detachable closure portion adapted to contain a supply of' oil and driving mechanism in said-chambcr, a worm shaft extending into said chamber for operating said mechanism, a plurality of bearings for said shaft., and a bracket serving as a mounting for said bearings, said b acket being carried at one side of said closure portion, and cxtcnding substantially fronisaid closure portion to the opposite wall portion of the chamber.

In a pump operating apparatus, an enclosure adapted to contain oil, a cover therefor, driving mechanism including a slide operating through said cover, a bell-crank lever associated with the slide and depending from said cover, a crank adapted to oper ate said slide through said bell-crank lever, a drive shaft connected with said crank, and means for connecting the slide with a pump or the like to be driven, said lever, crank and shaft being disposed in self-oiling relation in said enclosure. y

In a power head, an enclosure, a sup.- porting element associated with the enclo. sure, mechanism suspended from, and removable as a unit with, said element, the mechanism comprising a worm, a shaft, a worm wheel thereon, a crank on each side of said necting means between said cranks and said slides, slide guides attached to said supporting element, and means for connecting said slides to driven apparatus. c

In a pump operating mechanism, a housing therefor, a supporting member for said mechanism forming a removable element of said housing, said mechanism depending fromsaid member, and comprising a worm, a shaft, a warm wheel thereon, a crank on each side of said wheel, -a slide for cach Vof said cranks, bell-crank levers between said cranks -and said slides, slide guides attached tousaid supporting member, a motor carried by said supporting member for driving said worm,.and means for operatively to be driven by said mechanism.
