The object of my invention is to provide a door latch of simple, durable and inexpensive construction.
St-ill a further object of my invention is j to provide a door latch specially adapted for use in connection with the doors of an automotive vehicle whereby the door pillars may be of a minimum thickness to thereby make the vision fromI the body greater and whereby the controls for opening the latch may be most conveniently placed.
Still a further object of my invention is to provide a door latch'for an automobile body door wherein the door is made from sheet metal andv comprises inner and outer panels with the door pillars therebetween whereby the glass channel for the door may rest against the inner surfaces of the door pillar thereby largely decreasing the cross section of the door pillar.
Still a further object of my invention is to provide a door latch wherein the outside door handle may be disposed adjacent to the surface of the door glass and the inside door handle may be disposed at a place spaced very materially from the door pillar and the door latch may be shaped to pass around the edge of the door glass to thereby make the latch construction compact and so that 3o it will not materially increase the cross sectional area of the door pillar.
Still a further object of my invention is to provide a door latch for use in connection with a sheet metal door wherein the latch is formed from a strip of sheet metal which is bent angularly at various points along its length to provide a bridge extending around the edge of the door glass and a lug at either end which may be operated by the adjacent door handlewhereby the door latch may be operated from either the inside or the outside of the door, and still it is not necessary to run any parts of the lock directly through the door pillar to thereby increase the necessary cross lsectional area of said pillar.
Still a further .obj ect of my invention is to provide in combination with such a. latch, an inside door handle, which may be extended to position near the center of the door tient for the operator to reach.

Still a further object of my invention is to provide in connection with such an outside door handle, key operated means for locking the handle from rotary movement and an arrangement in the nature of the keyhole'slot connection to prevent the door `handle from being withdrawn from the door when it is in such locked position. f
1With these and other objects in view, my invention consists in the arrangement, lcombination, and construction of the various parts of my improved device as describedin the specification, claimed in the claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:

This rollback 21 is provided with an upwardly extending lug 22 which coacts the lug 16 of the latch 15 so that the turningof the rollback 21 will move the lug 2x2 to thereby retract the latch 15. A second bracket 23 'forms the `journal for the free end ofthe rollback 21 and is secured to the latch plate 13 by means of a turned in foot 24. This bracket 23 has a portion which bent upon itself as at 25 to. form a doorhandle retaining member. door. handle retaining member has a square opening. 26. therethrough for a purpose which willL hereinafter be described.
A spring 27, having a couple of convolutions around the rollback 21., has one end thereof designed to coact with the surface of the latch plate 13 and the opposite end thereof bearing against the lug 22 on the rollback 21 (as will be seen in Figure 6) whereby the intermediate convolutions of this spring 27 'i0 may tend to move the rollback 2 1 to its normal as distinguished from its retracted position. rlhe rollback 21 has a squared opening therethrough designed to receive a square shank 28 on the outside door handle. This 'f5 shank 28 is provided with an annular channel 29 adjacent to its inner end whereby the squared en d of the shank 28 may pass through the squared opening 26 in the retaining member 25 only when the door shank is in its opt0 erative position. The normal position of the outside handle when the latch is in normal position is such that the shank will have to be, rol-ated through approximately 115 from normal in order to reach the position-c5 in which it can pass 'through the squared opening 2G. This therefore means that thc outside door handle can not be withdrawn from the retaining member 25 when the latch is in normal position. rg0 The outside door panel 10 is provided with an opening through which the shank 2Sl may pass. An escutcheon plate 35 isrotatably but ncn-slidably mounted @n the door handle 34, and is removably cured tol the outside door panel 10 by screws '110 36, whereby said platel normally support the door handle assembly on the door. This` plate also encloses the washer 31 and protects saine against unauthorized tampering. v
From theA construction of the parts just described it will be seen that the bolt 33 may be reciprocated to prevent rotation of the door handle 34 relative to the Washer 31. This washer cannot rotate relative to the door 120 panel 10 solong as the lugs 3() extend into keyways 30.-(1., whereby the door handle when locked is held in normal position. rotated or Withdrawn and hence loosening the escutcheon plate at that line has no effect. If it is desired to remove the outside door handle for replacing or repairs, theescutcheon plate is unscrewed, and the handleunlocked, which will permit the door handle to be 'turned to the position where the squared portion of the shank 28 will pass through the retaining member 25, thereby permitting withdrawal laterally of the entire doorhandle assembly. v
The washer 31 is rotatably but non-slid ably mounted on the door handle within the escutcheon plate 35 by means of awasher 66 and spring 67 whereby the door handle assembly may be removed or installed by turning the handle 45 and setting ortaking out the two screws 36. Y
A cylinder lock receiving barrel'7 3, which is secured to the shank 28, extends outwardly from the door panel 1() and terminates with a door handle 34. Referring to Figure 5, a couple of diametrically spaced slots 74 are provided in the barrel 73 and co-act with an ellipse shaped cylinder lock retaining spring 75 which is mounted in a suitable groove 76 in the cylinder lock proper. A spacing sleeve 77 is rotatably mounted on the barrel 73 between the door handle 34 and the escutcheon plate 35. When it is desired t remove the cylinder lock proper for repairs or replacement, the locking handle assemblyr is removed, as has previously been described, and the washer 66, spring 67, washer 31, escutcheon plate and sleeve 77 are removed from the shank 28. The retaining spring 75 may then be pushed into the groove 76 out of engagement with the slots 74, with a suitable tool, and the cylinder lock proper drawn out of the barrel 73. From the foregoing, it may be seen that the cylinder lock proper may not be removed from the locking handle unlessthe handle has previously been unlocked and removed from the door.
The sleeve 77 further prevents the escutchcon plate from being moved along the bai'- rel 73 thereby preventing unauthorized access to the washer 31 for tampering therewith. Sleeve 77 further may be conveniently plated to give a i'inished appearance to the door handle assembly.
The key operated lock construction is not herein illustrated as such constructions are well known in the art and any standard commercial form of the cylinder type may be disposed in the door handle 34 to reciprocate the bolt 33.
A spring 37 has a couple of convolutions passing around the latch pintle 18 and one end thereof bearing against an extension 38 to the latch 15 while the opposite end of the spring bears against the inside door panel 11 at 39. This spring 37 therefore tends to normally urge the latch 15 into its normal or extended position. It will be noted therethe lug 22 and the latch will be returned to.

It will be noted that this rod 43.may be of any suitable length so that the handle 46 may be placed at the most convenient place for the operator of the car to reach. `A spring 47 is designed to coact with the rod 43 to return to the normal position with the arm stopped against a stop 72 formed integral with the clip 42 and to prevent rattle thereof. Door latch 15. coacts with an adjustable striker plate 62 which is moved to the desired position within al channel 63 which forms a part of the body pillar 64. Adjustment of the striker plate 62 is accomplished byloosening screw 65 to thereby permit the striker zplate 62 to -slide along the channel 63 to position to latch thedoor so that it will may rest against the central'portionof the;r`

Still a further advantage results from the use of my improved device in that separate spring means are provided for returning@`l practically all of theparts tonormal position so that rattle is largely eliminated. a
A further advantage results from the novel and convenient means for preventing removal of the outside door handle when it is locked, and for permitting easy installation or removal of the door handle assembly when it is unlocked. y.

adapted to be inserted into said barrel from -the outer rend thereof to lock the'shaiik from rotation, means` cooperating with the inner end of said shank to prevent its withdrawal from the doorpanel when in the locked position, an annular groove formed in said lock aligned V.Wit-h a pair of 'slots in said barrel, an ovel shaped spring disposed in said 4groove co-acting with said slot-s to-secure the lock in the barrel, said spring being removable from fsaid slots only from the outside of the barrel, and a removable sleeve disposed over said .barrel preventing access to the spring when the shank is in the door.
6. Ina door latch for sheet material doors,
