J. o. BARTON.
FUNNELS.
Patented Sept. 12, 1876.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
JOHN O. BARTON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN FUNNELS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 182,097, dated September 12, 1876; application filled June 6, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN O. BARTON, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Funnel, of which the following is a specification:
The accompanying drawing represents a vertical central section of my improved funnel for sirup and molasses.
The invention has for its object to provide, for the ready drawing ofl', filling, and measuring of sirup and molasses from the barrels to the jugs, an improved funnel that, accomplishes the work in quick manner, and forms a convenient device for grocers and others dealing in sirups, to draw them off for customers at small loss of time.
The invention consists of a funnel, with interior plug, to close discharge-spout, andcross Wires to indicate the quantity to be measured.
' The funnel has a hermetically-fitting screw-cap with central air-tube, to which the pipe, connecting with a force-pum p applied to the barrel, is attached, so as to force the sirup, withdrawing the plug, quickly into the jug.
In the drawing, A represents the main part or body of my funnel, being made of cylindrical or other shape, with conical bottom and fluted discharge-pi1.)e B that enters the neck of the jug. The discharge-pipe Bis closed by a cork plug, (J, with wire handle operated from the top of the main part A of the funnel. The funnel A is divided by cross-wires D into half gallons, gallon, and other measures, according to the size of the funnel to be used. The funnelis taken hold of by handles a, and covered by a hermetically-sealin g screwcap or cover, E, with central air-tube E, the funnel B, worked in connection with a forcepump, which is screwed into a barrel of sirup or molasses, the plunger being worked back and forth to produce an air-pressure in the barrel sufficient to accelerate the flow of the sirup on opening the faucet. When the funnel is filled up with the required quantity the faucet is closed, and the plug withdrawn from the exit-tube. The cover is then screwed. on, and a rubber or other pipe, that connects with the force-pump, applied to the air-tube E of the cover, so that in opening a small stop-cock of the force-pump, the same pressare that has been produced in the barrel is exerted on the sirup in the funnel, and there by the same is forced out quickly into the c, Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- A measuring-funnel for sirup and molasses, made of a body, A, with measuring devices D, exit-pipe B, and plug (Land of a hermetically-sealing screw-cap, E, with central airtube E, for attaching the connecting-pipe of the force-pump, substantially in themanner and for the purpose set forth.
