IMPROVEMENT IN INVALID ATTACHMENTS FOR BEDS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 182.067, dated September 12, 1876; application filed 7 February 9, 1876.

' To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWIN W. GRAFTON, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Invalid Attachments for Spring-Beds; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specificatiomandin which- Figure 1 is a top plan of a spring-bed having my improved attachment, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. 7

This invention relates to the combination, with a spring-bed, of the attachment, hereinafter described, for raising the occupant of the bed to a sitting position, and supporting him while remaining in this posture; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully shown and specified.

In the drawing, A are the slats, B the springs, and O the bottom frame, of an ordinary spring-bed bottom. To this latter is secured, crosswise, a bar, D, to the ends of which are hinged two slats, G G, that form the side pieces of a frame, E, the ends of which are formed by bar'D and slats F F, which latter are secured between the ends of slats G, and rest upon the ends of slat-s A of the bed. Bar D and slat F are connected by means of cords c, which are stretched between them in the open spaces between slats A of the bed. These cords are intended to support the bed-clothing when frame E'is raised.

Frame E is raised by means of a bracket, consisting of two side pieces, H, hinged to slats G at t, and an end pieceor handle, I, secured between the ends of side pieces H. Each of these has a series of notches, k, that engage with the end bar K of bottom frame 0, so that when frame E is raised sufficiently high it may be supported in its position by means of pieces H resting upon bar K, as described.

The advantages of my invention, and the mode of using it, will be readilyseen from the foregoing description. Its construction is simple and cheap, and. it may readily be attached to almost any spring-bed, as ordinarily constructed. By means of brackets H I, it may easily be raised to any desired angle with the slats A of the bed, thus raising the patient to' a sitting or any other desirable position,- which, without my invention, often is very diflicu'lt and exhausting to the patient, and when raised it forms a far more easy and comfortable support for the patient than the pillows usually'employed for supporting him in This is not the case in my invention, where the bar I, besides serving as a handle, by which both sides of the head-rest may be equally elevated atthe same time, at the same time braces and'stifi'ens the entire device.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United. States The invalid attachment for springbeds herein described, consistin g of bar D, slats G G, and slats F F, the latter connected with bar D by means of cords-e e, hinged side pieces H H, having notches h and bar or handle I, i

all combined and operating substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and specified.
