Description

' Ag. 25, 1931'. F, sAwYER SHOE AND ANKLE PROTECTOR Filed July 24, 1929 A TTORNEYS.
Patented Aug. 25, 1931 UNITED STATES.
FLORENCE SAWYER, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS SHOE AND ANKLE PROTECTOR Application filed July 24, 1929. Serial No. 380,486.
The invention relates to shoes and ankle protectors, which are adapted to protect the heels and rear portions of shoes andslippers and the exposed lower portion of stockings and the like. i f
It happens frequently that a person will spoil or mar a shoe or a stocking while driving an automobile by coming into contact with the gear shift lever of said automobile. In the modern automobiles said gear shift lever is arranged to the right of the drivers seat and the driver has to use his or her right foot for operating of the accelerator and adjacent other levers.
Thereby it happens easily that the driver comes into contact with the lower part of the shift lever and since many drivers are wearing light shoes and stockings this contact with the shift lever will spoilthe apzo pearance of said shoe or stocking.
The object of the invention therefore ,is to provide means which may be quickly and easily adjusted about the heel and rear portion of a shoe and the ankle part of the foot of a wearer.
Other objects of the invention not specifically mentioned may be easily ascertained and understood tion in connection with the accompanylng '30 drawings forming a part thereof. It is however to be noted, that the invention is not to be limited or restrictedto the exact construction or formation shown in the drawings and described in the specification, but
that the invention is only to be limited by the scope of the claim appended hereto.
In the drawings illustrating a preferred embodiment'of the invention: 7
Fig. 1 illustrates a protective device ac-,
cording to the presentinvention in working position on the leg of a wearer. I
' Fig. 2- is a front view of the protective device in enlarged scale.
A shoe and ankle protector according to the present invention is preferably made from a flexible material such as leather or canvas or the like. and shaped sothat the device will fit snugly about the heel of a shoe or slipper worn by the driver of an automobile. This body entirely surrounded by said body portion.
from the following descrip- Said material is cut portion 5 of said protective device is preferably surrounding the sides and the rear of said heel 6 and is provided adjacent its lower end and its forward rims with a strap 7 which prevents said body portion from accidental removal from said heel.
It is however to be noted that this body portionmay be closed entirely in the front so that the heel of the wearer will then be Two flaps 8 and 9 extend upwardly and forwardly from said body portion and may be either integral parts of said body portion or may be rigidly attached thereto. ,Said flaps end into narrow straps and areshapedflfili so that they are adapted to be wrapped about the lower. part-of the leg of a wearer,
so that they will surround and protect the ankles of said wearer and will fit snugly onto the span of a foot of a wearer. A strap 10 may extend from one of the flaps to the other one on the lower rims thereof adjacent the rearward end of said flaps next to the body portion of the device.
WVhen the protector is worn by a user this 7 strap is arranged underneath the foot on the so called instep of the foot of the user.
In order to adjust the protector to differ ent sizes of ankles one of said flaps 9 is provided with a vertically extending elongated f opening 11 adapted to receive the narrow end of the other flap 8 and the other flap 8 is provided with a pair of vertically extending elongated openings 12 and 13 respectively, adapted to receive the narrow end of the'flap 9 so that the flaps may be arranged as shown in Fig. 2, whereby the protector is easily adjusted to any size of ankles. In order to secure the protector in adjusted position any suitable device may be attached .90
r to said protector, for instance a plurality of snap buttons may be attached to the flaps, so that the protector may be closed thereby or a buckle may be fastened to one of said flaps throughwhich then the end of the other flap may be extended for securing it in adjusted position. i
c Having described my invention and how the same is to be performed I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A device of the class described consisting of a body portion adapted to surround the heel and rear portion of a shoe and of the leg of a wearer, a pair of flaps on said body portion adapted to be wrapped about the ankle portion of the leg of a wearer, a strap on said body portion adapted to be arranged underneath the instep of the wearer, and means for releasably securing the flaps in wrapped position, one of said flaps having a crosswise extending opening adapted to receive the end of the other flap, and said second flap having a pair of openings adapted to let the end of the first mentioned flap extend therethrough.
In witness whereof I aflix my signature.
FLORENCE SAWVYER.
