JOHN THOMAS E ILDEHBECH,
Patented Aug. 25, 1931 (UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE JOHN THOMAS BILDERBECK, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOB '10 WESTERN CONCRETE PIPE COMPANY, OF LOS ANGELB, CALIFORNIA PUMP Application filed January 30, 1929. Serial No. 836,108.
This invention relates to devices designed to actuate a number of pumping plungers by means of a rotating head.
One of the objects of this invention is to design the rotating head with a slantin face in axial direction to contact with an slidingly ride over a number of pumping plungers, the pumping plungers being yieldingly mounted by means of springs against the tension of which the plungers are pressed by the rotating head so that the plungers automatically move in one direct-ion against the head by means of the springs.
Another object is to provide a sectional head of which one section can be adjusted with respect to its actuating front face in relation to the other section.
Another object is to provide a pivotal inter-connection between the sections of the actuating head.
Another object is to provide adjusting means by which the valves and plungers can be controlled from zero to 100% pumping and acting movements.
Another object is to provide a pump of this type in which the actuating head and the plungers are incased in a lubricant holding chamber.
Another object is to provide communications between the lubricant chamber and the working side of the plungers whereby the lubricant in the pump chamber can be used for producing a desired pressure on the discharging end of the pump.
Another object is to provide a pump operating under constant speed and designed to deliver a variable volume. Other objects will appear from the following description and appended claims as well as from the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a general longitudinal midsectional view of a simple pump structure with a revolving actuating shaft and an also revolving actuating head provided with an axially inclined adjustable contact means between the actuating head and a plurality of axially movable valves yieldingly contacting with the head for continuous pumping move ments and the several parts incased in a lubricant holding chamber according to this invention.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the actuating head seen in the direction of the arrow 2 in Fig. 1.
Fi 3 is a cross section through the adjusta le head on line 3-3 of Fi 2.
.Fig. 4 is a fragmentary top p an view of the base blockin small scale roughly outlining a plurality of plunger holes arranged in a circle and other holes by which this base block is connected with other parts of the pump.
As illustrated a base blocki5 is provided with an upwardly projecting central pin 6. This block is also provided with a plurality of plunger holes 7 and bolt holes 8.
A plunger 9 is mounted in relation to each plunger hole 7. The plunger is provided with an enlarged head 10 facilitating an insertion of a spring 11 between the head 10 and the block 5 whereby the plunger is automatically lifted for suction operations.
Thespring actuated plungers are disposed to contact with an adjustable cross'head. The cross head consists principally of two pivotally connected members 12 and 13, the pivot being indicated at 14.
A special ball bearing consisting of the plates 15 and 16 with balls 17 inserted between the plates 15 and 16 is disposed between the cross head and the top of the plungers, to reduce the friction between the cross head and the plungers. The cross head is turnably mounted with its hollow shaft end 18 in the top block 19 and is geared or operatively connected to the crosswise extendin driving shaft 20, a ball bearing 21 being Inserted between the cross head and the top block 19 to reduce the friction between the cross head and the top block 19.
Adjustability is accomplished between the members 13 and 12 of the cross head by a spindle 22 disposed through the hollow of the shaft 18 and through the central hollow of the upper member 12 so that the lower end 23 of the spindle contacts with the lower member 13 of the cross head.
The spindle is sectioned to allow an insertion of the ball 24 whereby the friction betion, or, in ot er wor s, to a POSItiOII squarely crosswise to the axis of the whole structure and the axes of the plungers.
This ad'usting of the cross head and especially of t e lower member 13 including the plates 15 and 16 is accomplished by a turnmg of the spindle 22 so that the plungers may be controlled from an extreme long stroke to absolutely inoperative position.
In Fig. 1, for instance, the plunger head 10, in the left hand side of the drawings, is shown in its topmost or extreme outermost position while in dotted lines indicated at 10. the lowermost position of the same plunger head is indicated. .The movements of the several lungers are utilized to actuate or control t e check valves 27 and 28.
An outward movement of the plunger 9 results in an opening of the valve 27 and in a drawing of a medium into the compartment 29.
A downward stroke of the plunger results in an automatic closing of'the valve 27 and man opening of the valve 28 whereby a medium is discharged in the direction of the arrows 30.
All the several parts disposed between the base block 5 and the top block 19 are incased as indicated at 31 so that a lubricant can be maintained within this casing around all the several working parts. This lubricant can also be used as a pumping medium to be drawn through the openings 32 in the direction of the arrows 33 past the valves 27 into the compartment 29.
An inlet connection 34 is providedon the casing 31 whereby a lubricant or similar pumping medium can be sup lied in a required amount to maintain su cient of this medium within the casing to facilitate the proper operation of this pump.
The connection 34, of course, can be used to serve as a suction connection for this pump to draw any material that may be drawn by any pump, and the discharging connection 35, of course, may be used for discharging any material in any customary manner. However, this pump is especially suited for producinga high pressure on a variable capacity of from zero to 100%;
Since'the pump 0 crates continuously and since a plurality o valves or plungers can be installed, depending only on the size of the pump and the size of the plungers, it must be understood that this pump can be made as a non-pulsating apparatus.
It, furthermore, mustbe understood that 'at a constant speed the volume to pass through the pump can be varied at the will of the operator.
Having thus described my invention, I
