This invention relates to haulage mechanism and more particularly, but not eXclusively, to improved clutch means between a pair of relatively rotatable cable winding l drums for connecting the drums together for simultaneously rotation.
An object of this invention is to provide an improved haulage mechanism. A further object is to provide improved haulage mechanism including a pair 01"' relatively rotatable haulage or cable winding drums and improved clutch means for connecting s aid drums together for simultaneous rotation. ,A still further object is to provide improved clutch means between a pair of coaxially arranged, relatively rotatable, haulage or cable winding drums, one orp which isl normally power driven, for connecting the free drum .to the power driven drum Jfor rotation therewith, the improved clutch means being carried by the drum which is normally freely rotatable. Yet another object is to provide improved friction clutch means between a Vpair ot relatively rotatable haulage or cable 5` winding drums for rictionally connecting the drumstogether for simultaneous rotation, the clutch means being ol improved compact and rugged design especially adapted to the service conditions encountered.
' With these and other object-sin view the inventionconsists of certain novel features of construction and the combinations and arrangements of parts as will hereinafter more fully be described, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

ln this illustrative embodiment of the invention the improved haulage means is shown incorporated in the feeding mechanism of 53 a flexibly fed coal mining machine which is herein of the same general type as that described in my copending applicationl SerialV No. 179,357,1iled March 29, 1927, the clutch means provided herein being an improvement over the clutch means disclosed in the a'i'oresaid application. As shown, a machine frame l is provided having a plane bottom surface 2 on which the machine is slidable on the mine floor under the propulsion of the haulage mechanism hereinafter disclosed.- Carried by the machine frame 1 is a motor (not shown) which drives through suitable connections the linal driving pinion 5V ol' a plural speed irictionally controlled trans- 7"" mission mechanism, as clearly described in my copending` application mentioned above. The pinion 5 meshes with-an internal gear 6 herein Vformed integral with the upper haulage or cable, winding drum '7, thefhub 8 of rf which is rotatably mounted onspaced alined ball bearings-9 supported by a central upstanding sleeve portionl() herein preferably formed integral with the lower haulage or cable winding drum 11. The haulage drums 7 and 11 are coaxially arranged and are rotatably mounted on a vertical axis as shown in Fig.' 1. The hub portion 10 of the lower haulage drum 1l is rotatably mounted on ball bearings l2 suitably carried within the ina-l S" chine frame l, thelower bearing 12 being carried by a detachable bottom plate 13. The" bottom plate 13 is rigidly secured to themachine frame by suitable means including a vertical stud 14, the latter passing coaxially through tlie'hub 10. As illustrated, inter-` posed between the hub S ol the haulage drum 'i and the hub 10 otl the haulage drum 11 is a suitable oil retaining ring 15, while interposedbetween the lower drum 11 and the bottom plate 13 is asimilar oil retaining ring 16, and these rings further prevent access of dirt or other foreign substances to the drum bearings. ln this instance the hub of the haulage drum 7 has keyed thereto at 17 and arranged coaXially therewith a rotatable clutch drum 18 having a smooth peripheral surface 19, the clutch drum 18 projecting downwardly into a recess within the lower haulage drum 11 and having a depending flange encircling the lower portion of the drum hub 10. Sup ported on the lower horizontal flange or web portion 20 of the lower haulage drum 11 and disposed within the recess therein are a plurality of clutch shoes or segments 2l, herein four, having riveted thereto on their inner veritca-l surfaces strips of suitable friction material 22 adapted to frictionally engage the smooth peripheral surfaceof the clutch drum 18 as will later be described. As clearly shown in Fig. 2, the clutch shoes 2l each have formed thereon an arcuate eccentrically formed or cam surface 23 with which pressure rollers 24 cooperate, the rollers 24 being rotatably mounted on vertical pins 25 carried by a rotatable annular pressure plate or ring 26 arranged coaxially with the drum axes and 'housed in the recess between the upper and lower drums. The ring has upstanding projections or lugs 2T, herein four, hav ing oppositely disposed abutment surfaces 28 and 29. lnterposed between and projectf ing outwardly from the haulage drums 7 and 11 and supported on the annular pressure plate 2G is a control wheel 30 having a plurality of inwardly extending radial projections31, herein four, having oppositely disposed abutment surfaces alternatively engageable with the abutment surfaces 28,29 on the project-ions 27. In accordance with this illustrative embodiment of the invention there are shown upstanding driving bloclrs 32 fixed to the web 2O ofthe haulage drum 11 (see Fig. l) and interposed between the ends of the clutch sleeves l21, and these blocks have inwardly converging surfaces 33 eagageable with inclined surfaces 3e vformed onreach end of the clutch segments It will be noted that the various elements of the clutch are housed within the recess in the lower haulage drum 11 which is normally disconnected or free from the upper haulage drum 7, the clutch parts rotating with theV upper haulage drum 7 only when the clutch is applied. As a result wear is reduced to a minimum and all possibility of the lower haulage drum 11 being accidentally connected to the upper drum due to the automatic application of the clutch which would be possible if the clutch parts rotated with the upper haulage drum is eliminated, it having heretofore been 'found that such arcondition was present when the clutch part-s were carried by and rotated with the power driven drum T.

When it is desired to effect rotation of the bottom drum 11 with the top drum 7, the operator grasps the control wheel and manually rotates the pressure plate or ring 26 in a contraclockwisc direction fromv the position shown in Fig. 2, thereby causing the pressure rollers 24 to move along the eccentric or cam surfaces 23 on the clutch shoes, forcing the latter inwardly into engagement with the peripheral surface of the clutch drum 18 and as a result the lower haulage drum 11 is frictionally connected to the upper haulage drum 7 for rot-a- At this time the haulage drum 11 is driven from the upper haulage drum 7 through the upper drum hub 8, clutch drum 18 clutch shoes 21 and driving blocksV 32 fixed to the lower Vhaulage drum 11. 1lilhen the haulage drum 11 is driven by the drum 't' and is unc er load, the inwardly converging surfaces on the driving blocks 32 act against the correspondingly inclined surfaces on the clutch shoes thereby forcingthe latter inwardly to apply the clutch and thereby supplementing the action of the pressure rollers It will also be obvious that upon suitable release of the control wheel 30 the lower haulage drum .11, may be disconnected Jtrom the upper haulage drum 7, that is, when the conti-oi wheel is moved in a clockwise direction from the position shown in Fig. 2 wherein the projections 31 engage the surfaces 28 to a position wherein the projections 31 engage the surfaces 29, rotation of the pressure plate 26 in a clockwise direction to the position shown in Fig. 2 releasing the pressure of the rollers 2a from the cam surfaces 23 and thereby releasing the clutch.
As a result of this invention it will be noted that an improved haulage mechanism is provided comprising coaxially arranged, relatively rotatable haulage or cable winding drums and havingimproved friction clutch means between the drums for frictionally connecting the drums together for simultaneous rotation, the clutch means being of an improved rugged andcompact design espe-k cially adapted to the service conditions encountered. It will further benut-ed that the improved clutch means is so constructed that the elements thereoii; normally remain .staionary with the lower free drum and rotate only upon the application of the clutch and when the lower drum is driven by the upper power driven drum. lt will still further be noted that lby arranging the clutch parts within the normally free lower haulage drum the wear o-f the clutch parts is reduced to a minimum and furthermore the possibility of automatic andunintentional application of clutch which was present when the clutch partsrotated with the upper power driven drum is=eli1ninated-- These and other uses specifically described,

While in this application one form which the invention may assume in practice has been it will be understood that this form of the sameis shown for purposes of illustration and that the same may be modified and embodied in various other forms without departingfrom its spirit or the scope of the appended claims.

In a haulage mechanism, relatively rotatable haulage drums of t-he same size one of which is power driven while the other is freely rotatable, and clutch means carried by said freelyrrotatable drum for connecting the latter to said power driven drum for rotation in the same direction therewith, said clutch `means including clutch elements movable relative to said freely rotatable drum to effect connection between said drums and normally stationary with said freely rotatable drum when in their released position.
2. In a haulage mechanism, relatively rotatable coaxially arranged haulage drums of the same .size one of which is power driven while the other is freely rotatable, and clutch means carried by said freely rotatable drum for connecting the latter to said power driven drum for rotation therewith, said clutch means including clutch elements movable relative to said freely rotatable drum to effect connection between said drums and normally stationary with said -freely rotatable drum when in their released position.

In a haulage mechanism,,relatively rotatable coaXially arranged haulage drums arranged in substantially end abutting relation and rotatable about a vertical axis, one of which is power driven while the other is freely rotatable, and clutch means housed within said Vdrums and carried by said freely rotatable drum for connecting the latter to said c power drivendrum for rotation therewith.

In a haulage mechanism, relatively rotatable coaXially arranged haulage drums of the same diameter, power operated driving connections for one of said drums, and clutch meanscarried by said other drum for connecting said latter drum to said first mention-ed drum for rotation therewith, said clutchmeans including clntchelements mov able relative to said drums by which they'are carried to effect connection between said drums and normally stationary with said latter drum when in their released position.
