This invention relates to windows and particularly to windows equipped with sliding sashes; the object being to replace the said weights now in use by spring actuated mechanism operable to retain the sashes in desired positions of adjustment or to automatically raise the sashes from a lowered position upon release of certain detents associated with said mechanisms.
' According to this invention, each sash is connected by flexible metal bands to suitable spring actuated winding drums mounted in the sides of the window frame. Rotation of the drums in eitl er direction is normally prevented by suitable detents engageable therewith. These detents are manually releasable to permit downward movement of the sashes against the resistance of the springs associated uith the drums or to permit the 29 sashes to be automatically raised from a lowered position by rotation of the drums under the influence of said springs. The releasement of the detents is preferably accomplished through the agency of suitably connected push button m mbers arranged in a convenient portion the window frame. The detents also co-operate with the drums to hold the sashes in various intermediate positions of adjustment. One embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a view, partly in elevation and partly in vertical section, of a window equipped with mv invention.

Figure 8 is a fragmentary view of the upper portion of the Window frame illustrating the attachment of the spring actuated mechanisms to the upper sash, the latter being shown partly in. section.

Figure 5 is a perspective view of a spring actuated drum assembly. In this View one of the side plates of the drum supporting bracket is displaced to disclose the drum construction.

As'shown in these drawings, a pair of flexible members in the form of flat metallic bands 5 are fastened to the side rails of, the sashes appearing at 6 and 7. The bands are preferably fastened to the sashes in a detachable manner by means of the hooks 8 engaged in the band openings 9. The opposite ends of each pair of bands are fastened to spring actuated winding drums generally indicated at 10. Each drum, as shown to advantage in Figures 5 and 6, presents a side wall 11 and a circumferential wall 12, the latter wall having its free edges formed to present a circular series of spaced notches 13. A coil spring 14 is arranged in each drum 70 and normally tends to rotate the drum in a direction to wind the connected band 5 around the outer surface of the drum wall 12. The ends of the spring are fastened, respectively to the wall 12 and to the drum supporting shaft 15. This shaft is formed with a cylindrical intermediate portion 16 passing through a correspondingly shaped central opening in the drum wall 11. The ends of the shaft are square and fit into square open- I ings formed in the side plates 17 and 18 of a bracket 19. Each bracket is located in a channel 20 of the window frame and is secured to the bottom wall 20a of the channel by screws 21 or equivalent fastening means. 8!;
The flexible band 5, fastened to each drum passes through a slot 22 in the bracket 19 and through a further slot 22a formed in the adjacent channel wall 20a of the window frame. The drum end of each band is reduced in width and bent to form a hook portion 5a engaged in a slot 12a extending inwardly from the notched edgeof the drum wall 12, said slot being arranged so that its outer end opens into one of the notches 13. (975 Each drum assembly controlling the lOW- er sash 6 includes a detent 23 for preventing rotation of the drum in either direction. One end of said detent is received in a recess 24: formed in the bracket 19 and is mounted on a pivot 25. It may be noted here that the side plate 17 of the bracket is removable to give access to the drum and to the recess 24, said side plate being fastened to the body portion of the bracket by the screws 26. The free end 23a of the detent is shaped to engage in one of the drum notches l3 and serves to hold the drum stationary. The intermediate portion of each detent is formed to provide a lug 23?) having an opening receiving the bent upper end 27 of a release rod 28. The lower ends of the rods 28 are pivotally connected to the terminal cranks 29 of a rock shaft 30, said shaft being mounted in suitable bearings 31 carried by a plate 32 arranged in a recess provided in the sill portion 33 of the window frame. The shaft 30 is also provided with an intermediate crank 30a pivotally connected to the inner end of an operating stem 34. The inner portion of the stem 3% is slidably mounted in a member 35 carried by the plate 32 and is encircled by a spring 37 having one end engaging the stem shoulder 34a and the other end engaging the member 35. The spring pressure thus exerted on the stem acts through the rock shaft and release rods to hold the detents engaged with the drum notches. The extreme outer end of the stem projects through an opening formed in a guide casing 38 secured in the recess 39 and serves as a push button permitting the rock shaft to be conveniently operated in a direction to release the detents 23 from engagement with the drum notches 13 to permit the window sash to be pulled downwardly against the resistance of the drum springs or to be automatically raised from a lowered position through the action of said springs. The drums attached to the upper sash '1' are controlled by detents 40; release rods 4:1 rock shaft 42 and stem 43, corresponding in construction and arrangement to the similar elements previously described in connection with the lower sash. The outer end of the stem 43 projects as a push button through the guide casing a4 corresponding to the previously described casing 38 and is controlled by a spring 45 corresponding to the v previously described spring 37.
Assuming that it is desired to raise the lower sash this is accomplished by operating the stem 34'to release the detents 23. The resulting rotation of the drums 10 under the influence of the coiled spring 14: causes the bands 5 to be wound on the outer surfaces of the drum walls 12 thereby automatically raising the sash 6. The sash is caused to travel upwardly at such a rate that its progress may be arrested at any desired point by releasing the stem 3-l,to permit the detents to be reengaged in the notches 13. Movement of the lower sash from a raised to a lowered position is accomplished by operating the stem 34 to release the detents 23 and then pulling the sash downwardly against the resistance of the drum springs 14. WVhen the sash has been lowered to the de sired position it is retained there by engagement of the detents with the notches 13. The raising and lowering of the upper sash is effected in substantially the same manner under the control of the stem 43 and parts associated therewith.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is l. A window comprising a frame equipped with a sliding sash, spring actuated winding drums carried by the sides of the frame, a flat, flexible metal band connecting each drum to one side portion of the sash, pivoted detents normally engaging said drums to prevent rotation thereof, a rock shaft mounted in the lower portion of the frame, spring means tending to rock the shaft in one direction, manually operable means for rocking the shaft in the opposite direction and connections between the shaft and detents functioning to move the detents into and out of engagement with the drums dependent upon the direction in which the shaft is rocked.
2. A window comprising a frame equipped with sliding upper and lower sashes, a pair of spring actuated winding drums carried by each side of the frame, a flexible metal band connecting one drum of each pair to the lower sash, a flexible metal strap connecting the remaining drum of each pair to the upper sash, detents engaging the drums attached to the lower sash and normally prevent rotation of said drums, similar detents engaging the drums connected to the upper sash, a pair of rock shafts mounted in the lower portion of the window frame, one shaft being connected to the first mentioned detents and the remaining shaft being connected to the second mentioned detents, and means for operating each shaft to move the connected detents to and from a drum engaging position.
