PAINTERS EASEL.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 18,198, dated September 15, 1857.

To all whom it' may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE GILLET'r, of Little York, in the county of Cortland and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Machine for Holding Carriage and Sleigh Bodies, Canvas, and other Things for the Purpose of Painting, Striping and Varnishing, so that the thing to be painted can be readily placed in any desirable position and retained in that position during the pleasure of the painter; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a partof this specification, viz.:

A standard marked A in diagram rotating (horizontally at I) on t-he top of which rests the bed piece of the platform to which the article to be painted striped or varnished is rmly fastened by means of two thumb screws at E E, said platform being fastened at the top of said standard by a hinge joint and also by two other similar joints; one at each extremity of large semicircle C that said platform may be easily balanced from side to side being firmly held at any desired angle or position by means of the latch G being placed in notches or cuts marked in the inner edge of the smaller semicircle D said latch playing perpendicularly upon a rivet through large simicircle at I said platform is also swayed in an opposite direct-ion from side to side upon said joint at the top of said standard, being also firmly held at any point between a horizontal and very nearly a perpendicular position by means of latch F playing in main standard at F and resting in notches or cuts marked in the inner edge of large semicircle C combining in these three distinct and separate movements the means of obtaining almost and in fact every position that a painter could desire.

The name by which I distinguish this article of my invention is the- Universal easel and painting frame.

That I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The combination of the three motions obtained by the two semicircles and the rotary motion of the standard together with the latches and notches in the semicircles to retain the position and also as an application to the easel or painting stand.
