The invention relates to the continuous rolling of sheet bars, slabs or light platesinto sheets of desired gauge, and the object. of the improvement is to provide an apparatus 5' in which the slabs or the like may be sheared from a continuous strip, matched or piled into packs and passed through a series of mills, cooled, pickled, cold rolled, annealed and further cold rolled, all in a single conla tinuous operation.

The packs of slabs are carried on the conveyer 5 through the heating chamber and as they emerge therefrom the scale may be loosened and removed from the slabs as by the hydraulic nozzle 6 and steam jets 7.
The several slabs or plates in the pack may then be straightened as by the pack'straight ening device shown generally at 8, after which the pack is carried through a series of four high hot mills shown at 9, the distance between the stands of rolls being increased successively in order to compensate for the elongation of the pack as it passes through theseveral mills. The conveyer 5 is arranged to carry the pack through the several stands of hot mills 9 and then through acooler 10 which may be provided with inlet and outlet pipes 11 and 12 whereby cooling air or inert gas may be circulated through the cooler and over the heated pack to quickly reduce the temperature of the same.
As the cooled pack emerges from the cooler 1t may be carried through a pack leveler indicated at 13 and then delivered by the roller conveyor 5 onto a chain conveyor 14: which carries the pack through the edge trimming shears 15.
A shear 16 may be provided beyond the chain conveyor 14 for shearing the forward end of the pack before the same is passed the pack are loosened from each other as they pass throu h this pack opener and are delivered onto t e roller conveyor 18. I
At this point means may be provided for separating the sheets of the ack so that they may be passed through t e remaining mechanism singly as sheets. This mechanism is illustrated conventionally as comprising a fluid operated cylinder 19, the plunger 20 of which may be provided with any suitable means, such as the magnet 21 for ripping the top sheet of the opened pack an moving the same laterally away from the'pack.

If it is desired to produce only one pass cold rolled and annealed sheets. a transfer table 22 may be provided just beyond this separating mechanism in order to carry the separated sheets laterally and place them uplon the tandem conveyers 23 by means of w ich the single sheets are passed in spaced pairs through the tandem cold rolls 24 and double continuous annealing furnace 25. One or.more stands of the cold rolls 24 may be provided if desired.
Beyond the double continuous annealing furnace may be located hydraulic nozzles 26 and steamjets 27- for loosening and removing scale and the like from the annealed sheets. The sheets may then be delivered to any suitable receiving mechanism located beyond these nozzles and jets.
If it is desired to produce pickled and annealed sheets or full 'finished automobile stock, the sheets separated by the separating mechanism above described may then be passed in tandem, upon the parallel conveyers 28, through a double continuous pickling tank 29, washing tank 30, drying furnace 31 and cooler 32. This cooler may be of the same construction as illustrated and described at 10, being provided with the inlet and outlet pipes 33 and 34 for circulating a cooling agent such as inert gas or air over the pickled and annealed sheets.
One or more tandem stands of cold rolls 35 may be located beyond the cooler, after which the sheets pass in spaced pairs through the double continuous annealing furnace 36. Hydraulic nozzles 37 and steam jets 38 may be located beyond the annealing furnace to loosen and remove scale and the like from the annealed sheets.
A transfer table 39 may be provided at this point for removing the sheets if pickled and annealed sheets are desired, which need not be cold rolled; and also for cold rolled sheets intended to be galvanized or otherwise coated. If full finished automobile stock is required, the sheets are passed through one or more stands of tandem cold rolls 40 and then in tandem through the leveling rolls 41, being discharged from the end of the mechanism by the tandem conveyers 42.
From the above it, will be seen that the light plates or the like may be continuously passed through the apparatus to produce either cold rolled and annealed sheets, pickled and annealed sheets or full finished automobile stock as desired.
By separating the sheets from the pack and carrying the same throu h the tandem mechanism in spaced pairs, it will be seen that the hot rolls and associated mechanism which rolls the packs need not be slowed down in order to compensate for the operations upon the single sheets after the pack is opened and separated, thus permitting the entire mechanism to be operated at full speed.
It is not intended to limit the scope of the invention and the claims therefor to the use of four high hot mills and four high cold rolls shown in the drawings and described in the specification, to the exclusion of two high or three high mills; the four high mills being presented herein to illustrate kinds of mills which may be used for carrying out the invention.
I claim:
1. Apparatus for the continuous rolli g of sheets from light plates and the like including a heating furnace, a series of hot mills, means for passing the material through the furnace and mills in packs, pack opening and separating mechanism, a double continuous pickling tank, tandem cold rolls, a double continuous annealing furnace, and means for passing sheets in spaced pairs through the pickling tank, cold 'rolls and annealing furnace.
2. Apparatus for the continuous rolling of sheets fronrlight plates and the like including a matching table, a heating furnace a series of hot mills, means for passing the material through the furnace and mills in packs, pack opening and separating mechanism, a double continuous pickling tank, tandem cold rolls, a double continuous annealing furnace, and means for passing sheets in spaced pairs through the pickling tank, cold rolls and annealing furnace.
3. Apparatus for the continuous rolling of sheets from light plates and the like including a turning table, a heating furnace, a series of hot mills, means for passing the material through the furnace and mills in packs, pack opening and separating mechanism, a double continuous pickling tank, tandem cold rolls, a double continuous annealing furnace, and means for passing sheets in spaced pairs through the pickling tank, cold rolls and annealing furnace.
4. Apparatus for the continuous rolling of sheets from light plates and the like in eluding a matchingtable, a turning table, a heating furnace. a series of hot mills, means for passing the material through the furnace and mills in, packs, pack opening and separating mechanism, double continuous pickling tank, tandem cold rolls, a double continuous annealing furnace, and means for passing sheets in spaced pairs through. the pickling tank, coldrolls and annealing furnace.
