Description

K. PFUMOS COMPUTING BASKET Filed June 24. 1929 ii 00 000 0 l 00000000 oooooooo Zhwentor achieve the above results in a simple form of Patented Aug. 18, 1931 UNITED STATES. PATENT OFFICE GUS K. PRIMOS,OF SHREVEPORT, LOUISIANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO GEbRGE,
THUR-BER, 0F SHREVEPORT, LOUISIANA COMPUTING BASKET Application filed June 24,
ping in self-service stores.
This check by the customer is in addition to the check made of the articles by the store clerk after the customer has completed his shopping tour, and approaches the clerks desk or counter for settlement. In this way a double check is had upon the sales.
A further object of the invention is to combined basket and adding machine or counter.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an improved adding machine attachment which will enable the adding machine to be incorporated with the structure of a conventional basket, with the simple addition to the basket of a locking device 00- acting with the adding machine accessory.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention will be more fully described hereinafter, and will be more par ticularly pointed out in the claims appended hereto.
In the drawings, wherein like symbols refer to like or corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 1s a perspective View of an 1111- proved computing basket constructed in accordance with the present invention and with the latch device shown raised in dotted lines.
Figure 2 is a top plan View with the adding machine flanges shown in the outstretched position prior to being bent down.
Figure 3 is a similar view with the flanges I bent down and the locking bail clamp in propriate material and 6 represents the reinforced top edge thereof.
The handle of the basket is designated at 7. The basket shown is of conventional form 1929. Serial N0. 373,283.
and is basket. I
An adding machine 8 of narrow and elongated form, such as is pu'rch'asable upon the open market is placed across one end portion of the basket and afliXed thereto in any appropriate manner or as hereinafter described. The keys 9 of the register are exposed above the basket and preferably above the plane of the top portion of the basket frame or strip 6, whereby the keys may be punched conveniently by the purchaser as goods 'are taken down from the shelves in a 4 self-service store and placed in the basket.
Theadding machine 8 is provided upon its ends with plates 10 andll and upon its outer s1de wall with a plate 12. These plates may be afliXed to the end and side walls of the adding machine by welding or in any appropriate manner. I
The plates are provided with flanges 13, 14 and 15' adapted to be bent down in substantially U-shaped formation upon the outer side of the frame 6 of the basket. The plates and flanges are preferably of sheet metal in order to incorporate strength with the necessary flexibility. The shaft 16 of the register which carries the resetting arm or lever 1-7 projects through slots 18 and 19 in the basket frame 6 and the flange 15 respectively. I A locking bail or bow 20 is provided of substantially U-shaped form and preferably madeofsheet metal and pivoted to thebasket frame at its free ends as indicated at 21. This U-shaped bailis adapted to swing down .over the flanges 13, 141 and 15; and to bind them snugly against the outer surface of the basket frame 6. A notch 2-2 is provided in the locking bail 2-0 for the purpose of slipping. freely over the shaft 16.
Screws or other fastenings 23 may be passed through the locking bail 20, the flanges 13, 14 and 15 and the basket frame 6 for the purpose of further securing all of the parts into a combined rigid structure. v
In the use of the device, thebasket is intended for use by patrons of cash and carry grocery and other stores where the patrons use baskets and pick and choose the mer quite extensively in use as a market chandise that they want from the shelves, ice boxes and other compartment-s. In these stores all articles are invariably tagged with their proper prices and the patrons will be enabled, by means of the above described basket, to keep up with the amount of the goods that have been placed in the-basket. As the method now in vogue is to place the articles in an ordinary basket, the patron has to depend entirely upon the work of the clerk operating an adding machine or cash register at extremely high speed and in a manner, especially in the rush hours of which there are many in such establishments, calculated to lead to errors of calculation.
A patron supplied with one of the baskets according to the present invention may press the proper buttons on the adding machine as each article is placed in the basket-and his total is before him when he finishes for comparison with the total arrived at by the clerk of the store.
It is obvious that various changes and modifications may be made in the details of construction and design of the above specifically described embodiment of this invention without departing from the spirit thereof, such changes and modifications being'restricted only by the scope of the following claims.
What is claimed is 1. Means for supporting an adding machine on a market basket having the usual reinforced top edge, comprising aside and opposite end plates secured to the outer side and upon the opposite ends of the casing of the adding machine, said plates having outwardly downturned flanges at their upper edges for engaging over one end and the opposite sides of said reinforced top edge of the basket to support the adding machine in one end of the basket, and a locking bail pivotally mounted on the outer side faces of said reinforced top edge of the basket and extending about said end of the basket and over said flanges to bind the same oversaid top edge and maintain the adding machine in place on the basket.
2. Means for supporting an adding machine in one end of a basket, comprising a side plate extending the full length of said adding machine and opposite end plates extending the full width of the adding machine and secured to the outer side and upon the opposite ends of the casing of the adding machine, said plates having outwardly downturned flanges at their upper edges and extending throughout'their entire length for engaging over one end and the opposite sides of the rim of the basket and gripping the outer surfaces of said rim to support the adding machine in one end of the basket and to prevent the adding machine from shifting about in said basket.
