UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
THOMAS J. JONES, OF BLAIRSBURG,IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CULTIVATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 181,944., dated September 5, 1876 application filed June 9, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS J. JONES, of Blairsburg, in the county of Hamilton and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cultivator; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
. My invention relates to an improvement in wheel-cultivators; and it consists in the arrangement and combination of parts, that will be more fully described hereinafter, whereby the driver is enabled to guide the plows or cultivators, and to raise and lower them at' will without moving from his seat. 1
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same.
a represents the usual bent axle; b, the driving-wheels; c, the tongue; d, the plowbeams, and e the hangers or supports, which extend down from the under side of the axle, and serve as guides and supports to the beams d.
The two front ends of the beams are connected together by means of the bow g, the ends of which project slightly beyond the sides of the beams, and have the single-trees h attached to them. The middle and raised portion of the bow is pivoted to the front end of the lever 41, which lever is pivoted upon the oross-barj on top of the tongue, and extends back to within easy reach of the driver on the seat 5. By moving this lever from side to side,
the driver is enabled to guide the plows with ease and certainty in any desired direction, so as to avoid obstructions of any kind that may be in the way. Through the axle a, on each side of this lever, is made a hole, in which a 7 Attached to this lever and shaft by means of chains or rods t are the plow-beams, so that the driver can raise them up from, and lower them to, the earth, and regulate the depth to which they shall run.
It will be seen that these two levers extend back to the driver on his seat, so that he has full control of the plows at all times and under all circumstances.
It will be seen that the parts of this machine are few, simple, and compact.
Having thus described my invention, I claim-- The combination of the two beams 01, united at their front ends by the how 9, single-trees h, attached to the ends of the bow, lever i,
shaft n, and chains or rods t, substantially as shown and described.
Intestimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 25th day of May, 1876.
THOMAS J. JONES. Witnesses:
