SOCKET FOR BOLTS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 18,193, dated September 15, 1857.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, H. W. COLLENDER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sockets for Slide-Bolts; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, `and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical central section of my improvement fitted in the sill of a door or window to receive a vertical bolt, the socket being in a closed state and the bolt consequently withdrawn. Fig. Q- is a front view of the bolt. Fig. 3 is the same View as Fig. 1 with the exception that the end of the bolt is shoved into its socket.

The object of this invention is to prevent dirt, sand, or other substances entering the socket and filling the same so as to prevent the insertion of the bolt.
The invention is mainly applicable to sockets which are placed in the sills of doors and hinged windows and which are liable to become lled with dirt and trash by the feet of persons in passing over them, and 0n account of the gravity of the substances causing them to set-tle therein. A not unappreciable advantage however is obtained in other cases where the sockets areffitted horizontally and also in an inverted position, for the invention prevents the entrance of insects which frequently fill them with substances-nesting materials, &c.
The invention consists in placing a follower or disk within the socket and connected with a spring formed of any suitable elastic substance and so arranged that when the bolt is withdrawn from the socket, the spring will force the disk or follower upward or outward toward the orifice of the A represents an ordinary slide bolt which is secured at the lower end of a door or hinged window B.
C is the sill of the door or Window and D is the socket of the bolt, which socket lis fitted in the sill C, its upper end being flush with the surface of the sill. I prefer having the body of the socket of cylindrical form so that they may be inserted in their proper place, by the employment merely of a bit to bore the hole. The upper or outer end of the socket is provided with a flanch (a), through which a hole (b) is made, said hole forming the orifice of the socket, and being considerably smaller in diameter than the interior of the socket. The inner end of the socket has a cap (c) fitted over it which may beremoved to allow the disk or follower e (d) and spring (e) to be tit-ted therein. The disk (a) is of circular form nearly equal in diameter to the internal diameter of the socket and the spiral spring (e) is attached to the disk. This spring has a tendency to keep the disk or follower (d) closed against the orifice (b), Vthe disk (d) having a projecting portion (g) on its surface which fits into the orifice (b), when the disk is forced against the inner or under side of flanch (c), the projecting portion (g) being flush with the outer or upper surface of the flanch (a) and sill C, see Fig. 1. v
Vhen the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 1, the bolt A being withdrawn from the socket, the socket will be closed and dust, dirt, etc., effectually excluded. When the bolt is shoved down into the socket it is prevented from being thrown out by the spring (e) by means of a recess (it) which is formed in the outer side of the bolt, said recess being made to receive the inner side of one of the guides (i) in consequence of the slide being thrown over toward it by a spring see Fig. 3. Various arrangements however may be used for this purpose and I do not confine myself to any particular one.
The spring (e) may be constructed of wire in spiral form, or any suitable elastic material may be employed, and although I prefer having a cylindrical cast metal socket D, as described still this may be dispensed with and a plate corresponding with the flanch (a) only used, a hole being bored in the sill to receive `the disk and spring.
Having thus described my invention what I 'Claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,
Having a disk or follower' (d) placed within the sockety and Connected with a spring (e) arranged in any proper way so that as the bolt A is withdrawn from the socket the spring will press the disk or follower against the upper or outer end of the socket and close the oroe thereof for the purpose speoed.
