Description
UNITED STATES PATENT THOMAS B. MGOONAUGHEY, OF NEWARK, DELAWARE.
IMPROVEMENT IN CORN-PLANTERS.-
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 212,103, dated February 11, 1879 application filed July 5, 1878.
AUGHEY, of Newark, in the county of New Castle and State of Delaware, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corn- Planters; and I hereby declare the same to be fully, clearly, and exactly described as follows, reference being had to the accolnpanyin g drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device, partly in section; and Fig. 2, a front view of the same.
My present invention consists in certain improvements upon those for which Letters Patent were granted me March 27, 1860, and December 4, 1866, numbered, respectively, 27,644 and 60,218, the said improvements consisting in certain details of construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed.
1n the accompanying drawings, A represents the seed-hopper, which is firmly secured to a bar, B, the latter being provided with a stop, 1).
Within the hopper, at its bottom, is attached a strip, F, preferably of rubber, arranged to press against the sliding bar D, which is provided with a suitable handle, 0, and is held against the bar B by means of a metallic strap, E, attached to the latter.
The bar D is provided with a cup, e, for agitatin g the seed, and is slotted longitudinally, near its lower end, a piece, G, of the same thickness as the bar being pivoted in the slot.
The upper end of the slot is beveled in two inclines, as shown at f, and the ends 9 g of the piece G are beveled at diflerent angles.
To the upper end of the bar B is secured, at either side, a strap, a, which passes through a slot in the bar D, being secured therein by a catch, (1.
Such is in general terms a description of the construction of the device, from which its mode of operation will have been made evident. As the .bar D is raised, the cup formed by the inclines f in the bar and the beveled end of the piece G is filled with seed, which is carried outside of the hopper and discharged as the bar D descends, the cup being struck by the rubber F as it passes thereunder.
It is evident that the capacity of the cup may be readily altered by revolving the piece G upon its pivot, to accomplish which it is only necessary to turn the catch 61, release the strapct, and withdraw the bar D. A suitable bag for holding the seed is, of course, attached, in the usual manner, to the hopper.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with the hopper A, the reciprocating bar D, having cup formed by the bevelsf and 9, bar B, having stop I) and strap a, and the catch cl, substantially as described.
A 2. In combination with the slotted bar D, the reversible piece G, substantially as ;described.
3. The bar D, having a slot terminating in inclines f, adapted to form, in conjunction with the beveled end of the reversible piece G, a cup for the seed, substantially as described.
4. In combination with the hopper, having strip F, the bar D, having catch cl, cavity 6, and grain or seed cup, constructed as described, and bar B, having straps a and E, and stop 12, substantially as set forth.
THOS. B. MCGONAUGHEY.
Witnesses ALEXANDER WILSON, WM. MGKEOWAN.
