This invention appertains to new and useful improvements in drilling machines, and more particularly to a novel hand operated machine capable of being readly set up in a mine for use.
During the course of the following specification and claim, other important objects and advantages of the invention will readily become apparent to the reader.
In the drawings Figure 1 represents a side elevational View of the novel drilling machine.
Fig. 2 represents an enlarged fragmentary horizontal sectional view, taken substantially 5 on the lines 2--2 of Fg. 1.
Fig. 3 represents an enlarged fragmentary vertical sectional View taken substantially on the line 3 -3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4: represents a fragmentary vertical sectional View taken substantially on the line 4-4: of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings wherein like numerals designate like parts, it can be seen that the numeral 5 represents the wall of the mine to be bored, while numerals 6 and 7 repsent the floor and ceiling respectively thereof.
In carrying out the present invention, a pair of posts generally referred to by numerals 8 and 9 are provided for supporting the threaded boring bar 10 which is equipped at one end With the crank handle ll whereby the same is rotated.
Each of the posts 8 and 9 is built up of a pair of vertically dsposed parallel bars 12-12 recessed at its upper and lower ends for a block 13, through each of which a screw 1 1 is feedable and equipped with a pointed head 15 for to bite into either the floor 6 or ceiling 7, as in the manner substantially shown in Fig. 1.
Each head 15 is provided with handles 16 to facilitate rotation of the screw 14 to accomplish adjustments thereof. Suitable screws 17 serve to secure the blocks 13 and bars 12-12 together. Each of the bars 12 has one longitudinal edge thereof provided with a steerage of closely spaced notches 18, the notched head portions of the corresponding bars 12 of the posts 8 and 9 being in opposed relation as clearly shown in Fig. 1, and the MACEINE 1930. posts are maintained in a definite parallel spaced relation as shown in Fig. l by straps 19 at their upper and lower ends.
As is clearly shown in Fig. 1, (also see Fig. 2), the threaded bore 10 is seatable thru a pair of internally threaded sleeves 20 and 21 on the posts 8 and 9 respectively. Each of these sleeves 20 and 21 is equipped with trunnions 22 to engage in the notches 18 of the bars 12-12 of the correspondng posts.
It can now be seen that the cutting end 23 of the drill bar 10 can be threaded against the wall 5 in a quick and efiicient manner without likelihood of the supports giving under the strain of the drilling operation.
In adjusting the boring bar to a new position said bar is turned until the front edge of the threaded part passes through the front sleeve 20 so that said sleeve can move on the front end of the bar and then the handle 11 is removed and the sleeve slipped ofl" the bar after which the sleeves are placed in a new position and the bar again threaded through the front sleeve 20.
While the foregoing specication sets forth the invention in definite terms, it is to be understood that numerous changes in the shape size and materials may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is z- A drilling machine comprising'two pairs of posts, the posts of each pair being spaced apart, cross bars connecting the pairs together, the inner or opposed edges of the posts being formed with a plurality of notches, a rectangular member fitting between the posts of each pair and having a threaded bore, trunnions on each member for engaging any pair of notches in a pair of posts, a drill bar provided with threads for passing through the threaded bores of the rectangular members, and adjustable pointed members at the ends of each pair of posts.
