This invention relates to apparatus for administering colonic lavage treatments.
A principal object of my invention is to provide an apparatus for the irrigation of the colonwhich is especially adapted for use in hospitals and physiotherapeutic establishments and readily available for use at all times.
Another object of my invention is to provide a colonic lavage apparatus which may be easily installed, is compact, occupies a minimum of floor space and facilitates and expedites the administering of the treatments.
Another object of myinvention is to provide a movable member in the apparatus'to which the colon tube is connected, the movability contributing to the convenience of the patient in getting on or off the operating table and permitting the sterilization of the colon tube, the control valve and adjacent parts to be efiiciently accomplished. Another object of my invention is to provide an apparatus for'the purpose aforesaid in which are means for the proper preparation of antiseptic, medicated, saline or other mixtures or solutions used in the treatments, provision also being'made for control by the operator of the temperature of the water or solution at the beginning of and during the treatment.
Another object of my invention is to embody in the apparatus a flushing system whereby all the parts may be thoroughly cleansed after each treatment.
' Further objects of my invention are to pro vide an apparatus in which but one reservoir or tank for the water or solution is required instead'of a' plurality as now generally employed in apparatus for the same purpose and to provide an apparatus by which. the operator is enabled to observe at all times the discharge from the colon and which is conveniently and efficiently operable. Other objects and features will appear in the following description, accompanying drawing and the claims.
A full understanding of the invention may be obtained from a consideration of the detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming-a part Serial N0. 361,032.
of this specification, it being understood that while the drawings show a practical form of of the invention, the latter is not confined to strict conformity therewith, but may be changed or modified so long as such changes or' modifications embody no substantial departure from the salient features of the invention.

My invention is installed preferably near a supply of hot and cold running water and in the drawings ,1 and 2 are the hot and cold water supply pipes, respectively, leading into M the T-pipe connection 3 which directs the confluent streams of water into the mixing chamber 4. The mixing chamber is provided with a removable cap 5 to permit the introduction thereinto of any suitable salt, medicament, antiseptic, or other material with which it is desired to mix the water to be used in the treatment of the patient. A thermometer 6 is attached to the chamber 4 with its bulb extending therein, the thermometer being thereby adapted to register the temperature of the liquid, the inflow of the hot and cold water being controllable by the valve 7 which may be operated to permit the flow therethrough of hot or cold water only orboth together or to shut off all flow. The inlet end 8 of the T-pipe connection 3 may be screw threaded as shown at 9 within a suitable opening in the chamber 4; and is provided with an orifice 10 positioned, preferably, so as to discharge the water towards the bottom of the chamber and to thereby expedite a more thorough mixing and/or dissolving of the salt, medicament or other material which has been deposited within the chamber.
The chamber 4 is provided with a port 11 controlled by the three-way valve 12, by the operation of which the flow of the water or solution either into or from the feed pipe 13 to the reservoir or tank 14 or into or from the pipe connection 15 for the flushing pipe 16 which terminates in a spray nozzle 17 within the tank 14 may be controlled.
The chamber 4 is also provided with a port 18 controlled by the valve 19 by the operation of which the flow of water into the feed pipe 20 from the chamber is controlled.
The reservoir 14 is supported by the hollow metal standard 21 to which it is secured by a bracket 22, the lower end of the support standard 21 being preferably flanged and secured to the floor by screws 23.
The pipe connection 15 is fitted to the flushing pipe 16 which preferably is located within the standard 21, its lower end projecting through a suitable opening in the wall of the standard to engage the connection 15 and its upper end, through the pipe connection 24, extending downwardly within the tank 14 and being provided with the spray nozzle 17 whereby the interior of the tank may be thoroughly cleansed.
The feed pipe 20 which extends partly across the foot of the operating table 25 is preferably supported by brackets 26 secured to the table and, by suitable pipe connection 27, a swivel joint 28 is formed' with an arm 29 of a U-shaped pipe assembly 30, the other arm 31 by suitable pipe connection 32 with drain pipe 33 forming the swivel joint 34 which is in axial alinement. with swivel joint 28. The base 35 of the movable member 30 is provided with a table rest 36 and a threeway valve 37 having an operating arm 38 and a nipple 39 for engagement with a colon tube40 which is flexible, preferably made of rubber, and provided with openings 41 at its outer end through which, during. a treatment, the water or solution passes into and from the colon of the patient as the valve 37 is operated. v
The drain pipe 33 preferably leads to a receptacle (not shown), for example, a toilet bowl, located adjacent to but preferably be low the operating table 25 to permit the flow by gravity of the fluid and colon discharge thereinto, the proximity of the table and receptacle enabling the operator to ob serve the discharge as the treatment progres'ses.
' The operation of the apparatus will now be briefly described. r
In preparing the apparatus for giving a treatment the valve 37 is turned so as to connect the arms 29 and 31 of the movable U- shaped member 30 to permit flow of a liquid therethrough and to close the nipple 39. Valve 12 is closed, valve 19 is opened and valve 7 is operated to permit the joint flow of hot and cold water from the supply pipes 1 and 2 into the mixing chamber 4 whence it flows through the outlet port 18 into pipe 20, the movable member 30, the drain pipe 33, into a receptacle. The temperature of the flowing water is registered by the thermometer 6, and by operation of the valve 7' to vary the proportion of hot and cold water, the desired temperature may be obtained. Valve 7 may then be closed to permit the deposit within the chamber 4 of the desired saline, antiseptic, medicinal or other material. The cap 5 is then replaced, the valve 7 opened and the water at the selected temperature flows into and through the chamber 4, in its passage therethrough becoming thoroughly mixed with or dissolving the deposited material and thence into the tank or reservoir 14, valve 12 being operated to direct the flow into pipe 13 and valve 19 being closed.
. The tank having been filled to the desired level, valve 7 is closed and the apparatus is now ready for use in giving a treatment. Valve 19 is opened and the water or solution flows by gravity from the tank 14 through pipe 13 into chamber 4 and thence through port 18 into pipe 20 and the arm 29 of the movable member 30 into the flexible tube 40 which has been introduced into the colon of the patient. The flow into tube 40 is controlled by operation of the 3-way valve 37. In giving a treatment the operator opens and closes the valve 37 intermittently and upon its being-closed against flow of the liquidinto tube 40 the liquid and foecal matter dislodged in the colon enter the tube 40 through the openings 41, are conducted into the arm 31 of the movable member 30 and thence into the drain pipe 33 to the adjacent receptacle where the discharge may be readily ob served by the operator as the treatment proceeds.
It will be understood that the valve 37 is operated constantly during a treatment to enable the colon to be drained frequently and a fresh supply of the water or solution fed thereinto.
It will be observed that the operator is at all times enabled tocnote the temperature of the liquid by the indications of the thermometer 6, temperature variations and deficient supply of the liquid being correctible by adjustment of the control valves in the manner above described.
The embodiment in this apparatus of the U-shaped movable element 30, swivelly jointed to the feed pipe 20 and the drain pipe 33, contributes several advantages, among which may be mentioned the convenience to the patient in getting on or 011' the table, the
member 30 being then moved to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, the adaptability of draining the colon tube into a receptacle placed adjacent the foot of the table and the facility for cleaning and sterilizing of the operation of the valves 7 and 12 hot or cold water or both may be. directed into the chamber a and thence through pipe connec tion 15 into the flushing pipe 16 to the spray nozzle 17 by which the water is sprayed against the interior of the tank 14 from which it flows through the pipe 13 to the chamber 4 and thence through pipe 20 to the member 30 into the drain pipe 33. The manner of manipulation of the several valves in conducting the flushing operation will be obvious to the skilled operator. If desired, a sterilizing material may be placed in the chamber 4: with which the water will form a solution prior to its passage into the flushing pipe 16 and the parts of the apparatus will be subjected to the action of the sterilizing solution as it flows therethrough from the tank 14.
While I have herein described with some particularity one embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that I do not thereby desire or intend to limit myself thereto as it will be evident changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, the foregoing description and accompanying drawings being intended to be illustrative only and not by way of limitation. For example, in instances where it would be desirable, by reason of the condition of the patient, to have a colonic lavage apparatus which is movable and capable of being transferred from room to room in a hospital, my apparatus may be constructed of parts preferably somewhat smaller in size and supported on a tripod or platform, mounted on casters; the water supply pipes may then be dispensed with and the storage tank filled with water in any convenient manner.
Having thus described my invention I claim and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United States:
1. An apparatus of the class described comprising a water supply pipe, a mixing chamber having an inlet port and an outlet port, the supply pipe entering the inlet port. astorage tank, a pipe connection between said member with its two pipes to swing as a unit.
2. An apparatus of the class described comprising hot and cold water supply pipes, a mixing chamber, a pipe connecting said supply pipes and said chamber, outlets in said chamber, a storage tank, pipe connections between said outlets and said tank, a drain pipe,
a member comprising two parallel pipes having a pair of adjacent ends rigidly connected by a pipe, the opposite end of one of said pair of pipes being swivelly jointed to a feed pipe extending to said chamber and the corresponding end of the other of said pipes being swivelly jointed to the drain pipe, the swivel joints forming pivotal connections arranged in axial alignment to permit the member with its two pipesto swing as a unit.
3. An apparatus of the class described, a storage tank, a member movable as a unit and comprising two pipes having a pair of adjacent ends connected by a pipe, the other ends of the, two pipes having pivotal connections with their pivots in axial alignment to permit the said two pipes and their connecting pipe to swing as a unit to either side of the pivotal connections, and a connection extending between said tank and the pivotal connection of one of said pipes comprised in the member whereby fluid may be passed into said pipe from the tank.
4. An apparatus of the class described comprising a water supply pipe, a mixing chamber having an inlet port and an outlet port, said supply pipe entering said inlet port, a storage tank, pipe connections between said chamber and said tank, a rigid, movable U-shaped member comprising a pair of interconnected pipes, a pipe connection between said chamber and one of said interconnected pipes, axially aligned pivotal connections respectively adjacent the unconnected ends of said pipes adapted to permit said member to swing as a unit about the axis of said pivotal connections, a drain pipe leading from the other of said interconnected pipes and means movable with said pipes adapted for interconnection with a colon tube.
