Description

Patented Aug. 11, 1931 P O F F ICE EDMUND J. REEDE, OFSILVERIEON, OREGOZN" TOOL Application filed-April 1 1929. Serial No. 351,785.
This invention -ielates t too ls, and its general objectis to provide a pan of pl1ers that inclucle socketed jaws adapted t0 receive tool elements of various forms te accomplish various work the tool elements b'eingremovable andinterchangeable with respect to the jaws in an easy and expeditious mannen An,important.object of the invention is to provicle apair of pliers with attachments therefor. thatcooperrte for use in adjusting, removing and -tightening the pivot pins of seissors, shears and like implements.
A further object of the invention is to "provide a tool in the form of: apair of pliers with tool element inserts therefor, that is extremely simple in construction, inexpen sive to. manufacture, and efficient in operation ancl service.
This invention als0 consists in certain ether features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustratecl in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appendecl claim.
In clescribing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying cl rawings wherein like characters denete like o1 corresponcling parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure 1 is .a sicle elevation showing my tool in use with one type of pivot pin for shears.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary view illustrating 0ne jaw of the pliers.
Figure 8 is a sectional view taken approximately en line 33 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a perspeetive view of a wrench used with my pliers.
Figure 5 is a similar view of one of the removable tool elements or inserts.
Figure 6 is a similar view of another tool element.
insert.
.Figure 8 illustrates means f0r securing the pliers to a werk bench with means for holding the jaws thereof in fixed relatien Figure 7 is a view of still another tool through the medium of the l1anclles of the pliers.
F igi1ie 9 is a perspectii e view of one of the removable vise tool elements as shown in Fignre 8.
Figure 10 is a" fragmentary view illustratingthe applicat-ion 0 my pliers and teel element as shown in Figure 1 as well as the wrench, in use withanother type of pivot means f01 s'hears.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the reference numeral 1 inclicates a pairof pliers which inclucle the usual handles 2 having formeel therewith jaws 3 and 4.
As, shown in Figures 1 and 10, one of the jaws is provided with a square cornerecl bore 5 extendingtherethrough anclthis bore has arranged in e0mmunication therewitlr a recess 6 disposed in the face thereof which together with the face of the confronting jaw is serr-ated in the =usualmanner.
Tl1e bore 5 as well as the recess 6 is adapted to receive any of the elements as shown in Figures 6 ancl7, and the tool element as shown in Figure 5 is clisposecl in theboreand recessin Figures 1 and 10.
This last mentioned tool element is indicated by the reference numeral 7 and includes ashank 8 te be receiveclin the -bore 5 and a bedy 9 which is formeclwith converging sicle walls terminating in a sharp eclge 10 adaptecl t0 act in the capacity of a screw driver and this edge is arranged in the kerf of the pivot"pins forthe shears as shown in Figures 1 and 10. Formed in the side of the jaw thatis provicled with the bore and reeess, is a threaded b0re 11 that receives a set screw 12 which engages theshank of the tool elements f0r securing the latterto the jaw as best shown in Figure 3. The head of the set screws12 are countersunk in the awso a sto n0t interfere with the eflicient use of the tool as -willbe apparent.
In Fignre l,thenppermost blacle of the shears is threaded t0 aecommoclate the threadsoi the pivotpin that passes throigh the blades, with the resultthe blacles canbe rotated in the position desiredf0r loosening includes a shank 15 of the tool element 7 Wi1i hoid the pivot pin against movement.
In Figure 10 the pivot pin likewise has its head receiving the body 9, but in this form, the pi"ot pin is not threaded to either of the blades 01" the shears but has secured thereto u nut whioh is held against movement by a wrench 13 shown in Figure 4, the wrench being provided with a reiatively wide portion having nut receiving openings of various sizes and shapes and a handle 14. The wrench is used to threztd the nut of the pivot pin on and 0] the letter as will be apparent, and the body 9 Wi1l hold the pivot pin against turning.
'Ihe tool element as shown in Fignre 6 and a Het square body 16, the shank being adapted to be IGCGVGCI in the bore 5, while the body is received in the recess 6.
The tool element in Figure 7 is in the form of a punch and includes {1. shank 17 and 21 conical body 18, with 1, bore extending through the body as well as through the shank 17 to provide for the passage of portions punched from leether, metal or the like, it depending of course upon the material punched.
In Figure 8, I have illustrated a pair of pliers having bores ormed in each of the jaws which for distinetion are indicated by the reference numerals 19 and 20 and adapted to be received in these j2tws are the shank portions 21 of tool elements that have body portions 22 in the form of. vise jaws, as it will be noted upon inspection 0' Figure 9 that the body portion 22 is relati"ely wide and has a flat operating face that is adapted to cooperate with a like vise tool element for securing a piece of work between the jaws of the vise tool elements. For the purpose of securing the aws in fixed relation I provide a rod 23 having threaded ends and which is adapted to be passed through openings formed in the handles of the jaws 19 and 20, and secured to one of the threaded ends is a nut 24 while the other threaded end receives a wing nut 25. The pliers are held in fixed relation with respect to a W01k bench or the like through the medium of a ciamping band 26 having rounded ends to engage the handles and this band 26 has en opening complish vnrious work.
It is thought from the foregoing descrip tion that the advantages and novel feat-ures of my invention Will be readily apparent.
I desi1e it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination end arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fa1i within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is:
A tool comprising pivoted jaws having flat serrated opposing aces, handles for the jaws, one of said jaws having a rectangular shaped opening extending through the respecti"e serrated face thereof and having in said last mentioned ace a rectangular si1aped recess about the opening, a shank having sqnared feces received in the opening, a head on the shank and seated in the recess and having converging Walls to pro- Vide EL thin edge to be 16C61V8C1 in the groeve of a screw for connecting the blades of scissors and with the end of the screw in engagement with the serrated fuce of the other j2tw, and a set screw carried by the j2tW having the opening und engaging the shank.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
