scHooL DESK AND. SAT,
Application yfiled March 7,
This invention relates to an improvement in school desks and seats and has as its gen- -eral object to provide a combined desk and seat, for school use, which will present advantages over the ordinary desks and seats of this type.
It is a well known fact that schooly furniture is subjected to rather rough usage and therefore the present invention contemplates the provision of a combined desk and seat construction which will be exceptionally substantial and in which the seat member may be firmly supported in both lowered and raised positions.
Another object of the invention is to rovide in an article of furniture of this c ass, a novel means for supporting the seat, which means will vbe so constructed as to firmly support the seat in lowered position for use with minimum strain on the pivotal connection between the seat construction and the desk structure. Y
Another object of the invention is to provide, in a combined desk and seat, novel means for limiting the movement of the seat to upright position, and which means will preclude any likelihood of the seat forcibly striking the desk top or the back of the'seat when the seat is adjusted to such position.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of the several, parts, to be hereinafter fully described, i1- lustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had toi the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a 'View in side elevation of a combined desk and seat constructed in, accordance with the invention, the seat being shown in'lowered position, for use.
Figure y2 is a front elevation of the structure with the seat in the position shown in Figure 1. f

'i Figure 3 -is a view similar to Figure l showing thel seatin elevated position.`

Figure-:5 is a perspective viewfof. the stru'ct1'1re`,"('thev seat being shown in elevated position. f The desk structure comprises a body 1, the top of whichl is indicated by the numeral 2, and the'said body is supported byfro'nt legs 3, and rear legs l','thes e legs being boltedor otherwise secured' at their upper ends to the outer sides ofl the -ends Aof the body-'1. Eachof the legs 3 has its forward edge, throughout its upper portion curved gradually, as' indicated by the numeral 5, soA asto conform ,to the curvature of the back of the seat, which is indicated'by 'the numeral `For a purpose to bepresently described, the forward edge of each leg at the lower` end of the curved portiony 5l is extended downwardly and then curved"upwardly and thence forwardly so as to provide a 'seating "notch, indicated by the numeral 7 f Braces 8 are secured toandconnect and'relativelyv brace the vlegs 3 and-4 y belowftheir securedv upper portions', and
other braces9 ezitend'between and arefse-A cured to and connect 'and brace the legs 8 and f1 abovetheir upper-ends, yand the`forward ends of the braces 8 are c'utjon a curved line 'so'as' to conform to the contour of the rear side of the blCkrest 6 at the lower ortionl`thereof.-"A foot rest-10 is montej at its ends" upon rthe braces 9 and secured thereto 'inany Asuitable manner. The seat unit comprises a pair of arms which are indicated by the numeral 11 and these arms are pivotally mounted between their ends upon the front legs 3 by means of a rod 12 which is fitted at its ends through openings in the legs 3 and the arms 11, washers 13 and nuts 14 being fitted onto the ends of the rod 12, whereby to snugly connect the arms with the legs.
It will be observed by reference to Figure 1 that the notch 7 is spaced inwardly from the lower portion of the forward edge of each leg so that ear portions 15 are provided in front of each seating recess or notch 7.
Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings illustrate the seat in lowered position or in other 5 words in position for use and it will be observed, and particularly by reference to Figure l that when the seat 1s in this position, the rear portions of the arms 11 will engage at their upper edges against the under sides of the respective braces 8, so that a very firm support is provided for the seat. Figures 3 and 5 illustrate the seat in raised .or elevated position as when not` required for use, and, in this position of the 15 seat, the rear edge of theseat bottom will rest in the notches or recesses 7 and therefore the upward and rearward swinging movement of the seat in the position shown in these Figures will be limited so that the forward portion of the seat will not scrape forcibly against the backrest 6 if the seat is quickly or forcibly swun upwardly. The seat bottom, backrest and esk top may all be made of one piece of wood, suitably shaped, or from tongued and grooved material.
What I claim is A school desk and seat comprising front and rear legs and the front legs disposed on an inclined plane and the rear legs disposed vertically to position the upper ends of the front and rear legs in close proximity to each other with the lower ends of the legs spaced a considerable distance to provide a firm supporting structure, a desk body connected to the upper ends of the legs, a seat back secured to the front legs and the latter having notches below the lower edge of the back to provide shoulders, arms pivoted intermediate their ends to said vshoulders, a seat secured to the arms forwardly of the pivots, upper and lower braces connecting the front and rear legs and the upper braces engaged by the arms when in one position to support the seat in an operative position, and a strip forming a foot rest connecting the lower braces and copperating therewith in firmly bracing the egs. 5o In testimony whereof I affix my signa# ture.
