Description

J. H. SWIHART.
i GRAIN-BANDS. No .181,876. Patented Sept. 5,1876.
NAPETERS. FHOTQ UTHDGRAPHEH WADN NFTDN D C UNITED STATES JOHN H. SVVIHART, OF UPSHUR, OHIO.I
IMPROVEMENT IN'GRAIN'BANDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 181,876, dated September 5, 1876; application led July 1, 1876.
' Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Grain-Binder, of which the'fol- Y lowing is a specitication:
The ligure is a perspective View of my improved grain-binder.
rIhe object of this invention is to furnish an improved binder for sheaves and shocks of grain, which shall be simple in construction, strong` and durable, easily applied and detached, not liable to become detached or loose, and shall have no loose pieces to become lost.
The invention consists in an improved grainbinder, formed of the two Wires jointed to each other, and the plate provided with three holes, two in one end and one in the other, and hinged to one of the said two wires, as hereinafter fully described, to adaptit for use, as set forth.
A B are ltwo curved or semicircular pieces of wire, which are jointed together by eyes formed upon their adjacent ends. Upon the other end of the 4wire B is formed an eye, which passesl through two holes formed near each other in the end of -a short and narrow metal plate, G, so as to hinge the said plate to the said wire. In the other end ofthe plate C is formed a single hole to receive the free end. of the wire A, as shown in the ligure.
In using the binder it is passed around the sheaf or shock to be bound, and the free end ofthe wire A is passed through the hole in the free end of the plate C, and may be drawn to any desired distance through said hole by keeping the plate C at right angles with the part ofthe wire A passing through it, the hinge at the other end of the plate C enabling this to be readily done. When the binder is released the pressure of the bundle upon the inner end of the plate C brings the said plate into an inclined position with and causing it to bind upon the said Wire A, so that it cannot become accidentally detached. v
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- An improved grain-binder, formed of two wires, A B, jointed to each other, and the plate O, provided With three holes, two in one end and one in the other, and hinged to the -wire B, substantially as herein shown and described, to adapt it for use, as set forth.
JOHN HENRY SWIHART.
