This invention relates to receptacles and has for its principal object the provision of an improved construction of this character 1 involves the provision of certain improvements in the type of receptacles which embody a sliding catch or finger-piece with which a keeper is changeable toprevent opening movement of the lid, the improvements relating to the structural form of the sliding catch and a mode of mounting the same for ready engagement and disengagement with its keeper. 7 7

Two modes of carrying out the present in- 5; vention are shown by way of example in the accompanying drawings, which form a material part of this specification, and in which Fig. 1 represents an elevational view of a J receptacle embodying the invention, the lid being shown in open position and a part of the body being broken away;

The receptacles shown by way of example in the accompanying drawings are in the form of round vanity cases or compacts, but it will be understood that the principle of the invention may be practiced in connection with receptacles other than vanity cases and of different shape.

The receptacle is disclosed as comprising a body 10 and a lid or closure 11 hinged thereto at 12 for opening and closing movement. The annular side 13 of the body is provided with a recess or cut-away portion 14. forming shoulders 15 between which the sliding catch indicated generically at 16 is movable. Said slidingcatch 16 includes a transverse portion 17 attached to a finger hold in the form of a vertical portion 18 adapted to slide along the exterior convex face of the side 13 of the body. Depending from the transverse portion 17 and formed so as to slidably fit the concave or inside face, of the side wall 13 is a portion 19having two oppositely directed arms or prongs 20 also adapted to slide along the concave or inside face of the side wall 13.

Arranged within the body and spaced from the inside face of the side wall 13 is a ring member or bezel 21, the spacing of which from the side wall is effected by an outturned annular flange 22 whose outer edge engages the inside face of the side wall. In the annular flange 22 is provided a recess or cut-away portion 23 corresponding in position to the recess or cutaway portion 14, the said recess 23 continuing somewhat beyond the positions of the shoulders or stops 15. Said recess or cut-away portion 23 accommodates the downwardly directed portion 19 of the sliding catch or finger-piece.

Under this construction the oppositely directed arms or prongs 2O slidablyfit between the ring member 21 and side wall 13, below the out-turned annular flange 22, whereby the sliding catch is held inoperative position for movement between the shoulders or stops 15. By an inspection of the drawings, it will be seen that the arms or prongs 20 are of such length that, irrespective of the position of the sliding catch between the shoulders 15, the sliding catch will be maintained in operative position, since the said arms or prongs cannot be withdrawn owing the the out-turned annular flange 22. on the ring member. The lid closure 11 has a depending flange 24 corresponding with the side wall 13' to meetthelatter' edge to edge, and depending from the inner face of the flange 24. is an annular member 25 which protrudes below said flange 24 and is bowed as shown in Fig. 4 to provide an outwardly projecting lip 26. A recess or cut-away portion 27 is provided in the lip 26, its length being slightly greater than the length of the portion 17 of the sliding catch. As will be observed from the drawings said recess 27 in the lip registers with the end portion of the recess 14 of the side wall l3,so that when the lid is closed said portion 17 of the sliding catch will pass through the recess 27 of the lip, whereupon the depending portion 19 of the sliding catch can be slid over and interengaged with the lip 26 for securing the lid in closed position as best shown in Fig. l- Therefore, to secure the lid in closed position, it is only necessary to move the sliding catch into the end position where, upon closing the lid. the transverse portion 19 will pass through the lip opening 27 whereupon by moving the catch endwise beyond the lip opening 27 the por tion 19 will be engaged over the lip 26. To open the case after the lid has been secured, the sliding catch is moved so that its transverse portion, 17 can pass through the recess 27 of the lid, when the lid or closure will automatically spring into open position, the

- According to a feature of my invention, the transverse portion 19 is formed at its oppo- Site ends with tapering wings 28 narrowing or tapering away from the portion 19 and adapted to have snug frictional engagement in correspondingly tapered notches 29 provided in a flange 22 at the ends of the recess 23 therein. Means are-thus provided for frictionallymaintaining the sliding catch at. either end of the recess 14 in abutmentagainst the shoulder 15.; and it will be observed from an inspection of the. drawings that when the sliding catch is frictional-1y held at the right hand end of the recess 14, it registers with the lid recess 2'1, and when similarly held atv the left hand end of said recess, it is approximately diametrically opposite the hinge 12, a position in which .it-is most. desirable to have an interlocking action with the lid to secure the lid in closed position.

In the form of construction shown: in Figs. 5 and 6,; the sliding, catch is. represented as comprising a transverse portion 3.0 which extendsdirectly outwardly beyond the side wall 31 of the body so as to provide a suitable 0utwardly projecting finger hold. In this form of construction the sliding catch is made, as in the previous instance, with oppositely directed arms or prongs 82 which slidably fit between a ring element 33 and the inside face of the side wall 31 of the body, thering element having an out-turned annular flange 34 with a recess 35 to accommodate the movement of the vertical portion 360i the sliding; catch. As in the first described form of construction the sliding catch is slid longitudinally of the recess 35 in order to be engaged or disengaged with the lip of the lid or closure for the body.

From the foregoing description, considered in connection with the drawings, the con-r struction, manner of use and several advantages of my present invention will be readily understood. It will be apparent that I have. provided a vanity case, which is of simple. and rugged construction, which is easy to operate and which will be economical in manufacture- Vhi'le I have, in the present instance, shown, and described the preferred embodiment.ofmy invention as reduced to practice,.it is to be understood that the construction issusceptible of modification in various particulars. without departing from the spirit or scope of my invention or sacrificing any of its: advantages.

I claim:

1. In a receptacle, embodying a body with a side wall and a hinged lid with a lip, a; separate retaining member disposed, within the body and forming a guide-way space between. itself and the slde wall, and a finger-piece,

adapted to be interlocked with said lip, slidably fitting said side wall and provided with prongs disposed in said guide-way space be.- tween said retaining member and said side wall.

2. In a receptacle, embodying a body with a side wall and a hinged lid with alip,'the side wall having an elongated edge recess therein defined by shoulders, a separate retaining member disposed within the body and forming an elongated guide-way space between itself and the inner face ofthe side wall, a finger-piece comprising a. body slidably embracing the side wall and movable within said recess between said shoulders,-

and a member on the finger-piece slidably'en i gaging within said guide-way space for operati'vely maintaining the. finger-piece inpl'ace, the body of said finger-piece being formed for engagement with said lip, where by to secure the lid in closed position.

3. In a receptacle, embodying a'body with a side wall and a hinged lid having an. elongated lip, a ring disposed within the body and spaced from the side wall bya flangmand a finger-piece slidably fitting said sidewall and provided withprongs slidably fittingfbee tween said ring and side wall below;-said flange, said finger piece being adapted for interlocking engagement with said lip to keep the lid in closed position.

4:. In a receptacle, embodying a body with a side wall and a hinged lid with a 11p, the

side wall having an elongated edge recess therein defined by shoulders, a retaining member within the body forming a guide-way space between itself and the side wall, a finger-piece adapted to be interlocked with said lip slidably embracing the side wall and movable in said recess between said shoulders, pronged means on said finger-piece slidably engaging within said guide-way space for operatively retaining the finger-piece in place, and said shoulders constituting stops for determining the range of movement of said finger-piece.

5. In a receptacle, embodying a body with a side wall and a hinged lid with a lip, a retaining ring within the body forming a guide-way with. the side wall, a finger-piece, adapted to be interlocked with said lip slidably fitting said side wall and provided with pronged means slidably engaging within said guide-way for operatively retaining the finger-piece in place, and wing means on the finger-piece adapted to afford and maintain an engagement with the retaining ring for securing the finger-piece in a'position of adjustment.

6. In a receptacle, embodying a body with a side wall and a hinged lid having a lip,

a ring disposed within the body and spaced from the side wall by an integral flange, a finger-piece, adapted to be interlocked with said lip, slidably fitting said side wall and provided with prong means slidably fitting between said ring and side wall below said flange, and wing means on said finger-piece adapted to afford and maintain an engagement with said flange for securing the fingerpiece in a position of adjustment.
