This invention relates to a portable combined transformer and vibratory interrupter.
The transformer and vibratory interrupter of the invention is arranged particularly for use with surgical or electrotherapeutic instruments or other devices which are arranged to be operated from an electric light socket, the device being readily portable,
compact, self-contained and applicable to any convenient socket outlet.
An object of the invention is to provide a combined transformer and vibratory interrupter Which will be reliable and certain in operation and useful for a long period of time.
Another object of the invention is to provide a portable transformer and vibratory interrupter which is readily accessible for adjustment and inspection.
Another object of the invention is to provide a combined transformer and vibratory interrupter wherein the Wires are so arranged as to permit inspection and adjustment Without disturbing or disconnecting any of the wires.
Another object of the invention is to provide a combined transformer and vibratory interrupter in which but slight fluctuations occur in the secondary circuit of the trans former when the voltage of the load current is changed.
Another object of the invention is to provide a combined portable transformer and vibratory interrupter which is strong sturdy, compact and durable.
A further object of the invention is to provide a portable combined transformer and vibratory interrupter which is self-contained and which may be readily connected to any socket for operation.
A further object of the invention is to provide a combined transformer and vibratory interrupter which may be connected to a series of either direct or alternating cur rent without alteration. I
A further object of the invention is to provide a portable combined transformer and vibratory interrupter in compact form for socket power operation.
According to the inventlon, the comblned transformer and vibratory interrupter comprises a single casing containing a. transformer and induction-coil, vibrator and condenser so associated and arranged that the device as a whole is readily portable, and which may be inserted in anyconvenient outlet or socket and operated on direct or alternating current, and to which any tool for low voltage alternating current operation may be connected.
The invention also contemplates the retention of the several elements in the casing by a single plate which is fastened to the casing.
The invention further contemplates a removable lid for the casing which is held in place by a single bolt and which lid carries a plug for insertion in any convenient socket. The lid also carries strip conductors for leading the line current from the plug to suitable line terminals within the casing.
The above, other and further objects of the invention will be apparent from the following description, drawings and appended claims.

Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the combined vibratory interrupter and transformer.

Figure 5 is a wiring diagram showing the electrical connections between the various elements of the device.
As shown on the drawings:
The combined transformer and vibratory interrupter comprises a casing having a substantial box-like part 1, a lower cylindrical part 2 and a lid 3.
The casing and lid are made of insulating material.
On the outside of the lid 3 is a plug 4 for insertion in any electric socket.
A bolt 5 passes through the column 6 on the lid for attaching the lid in position on the casing.
The column 6 carries conductors 7 and 8 which at the upper ends are electrically connected to the plug 4 and at the lower ends are connected to terminal strips 9' and 10, respectively.
A transformer 11, which in the present instance is a spool transformer, is arranged in the part 2 of the casing.
Part 1 of the casing is substantially rectangular in plan and contains an induction coil 12, a condenser 13 and a vibrator.
The transformer, induction coil and condenser are retained in position by a top plate 1 1 overlying the induction coil and condenser, and which is fastened by bolts 15 passing through the plate and in threaded ngagement with the casing.
The vibrator is fastened to one end wall of the casing by screws 16. The vibrator arm 26 has a soft iron weight 31 at its end arranged off center of the core of the coil 12 but within the field thereof so that the lines of force cut said weight 31 on an angle thus preventing sparking.
Fixed against the opposite wall of the easing is a terminal 17, and on the same wall as th vibrator another terminal 18 is fastened.
These terminals 17 and 18 are contacted by the strip terminals 10 and 9, respectively, carried by the lid 3 to conduct the line circuit intothe casing.
A conductor extends from terminal 17 to terminal 19 of the induction coil 12. From terminal 20 of the induction coil a conductor 5 21 leads to terminal 22 of the primary circuit of the transformer 11. A conductor 24 leads from the other terminal 23 of the primary of the transformer to binding post 25 which is in electrical connection with the vibrator 26.
The vibrator consists of the vibrating arm 26 having a contact 27 thereon. Another contact 28 is arranged on the base plate 29 of the vibrator unit. A conductor 80 leads from the base plate 29 to the line terminal 18 in the casing.
The transformer 11 is provided at its lower end with two contacts not shown, which are the terminals of the secondary circuit of the transformer. Surrounding these terminals is a socket 331 having a bayonet slot 32 into which socket may be inserted the plug of any tool which is to be used in connection with the combined transformer and vibratory interrupter.
The transformer is designed to deliver a current of approximately 6 volts, whereas the current delivered to the terminals 17 and 18 is the ordinary house lighting current of approximately 110 volts.
The combined transform r and vibratory interrupter may be used with either alternating or direct currentat the terminals 17 and 18, and are suitably provided with cores of laminated magnetic material.
When direct current is supplied to the line terminals the vibrator is set in motion in the usual manner. A pulsating direct current then passes through the primary circuit of the transformer. The pulsations of the direct current through the primary of the transformer produce corresponding pulsations in the core of the transformer, causing the setting up of an alternating current in the secondary of the transformer. The vibrator will be at rest when alternating current is used for the reason that alternating current does not have as great an attraction at the core of the coil 12 as does direct current as direct current rises more abruptly and to a higher maximum than does an alternating current. It is possible that under certain conditions of adjustment the vibrator will move responsive to alternating current but this is not desired as it tends to reduce the total induction in the primary of the transformer 11.
lVhen an alternating current is supplied to the line terminals 17 and 18 the vibrato-r will be at rest with its contact 27 in engagement with the contact point 28 on the base of the vibrator unit.
The flow of alternating current will then be through the induction coil 12, the primary winding of the transformer 11, through the vibrator and'back to the line circuit. The induction coil 12 acts as a choke coil absorbing from 15 to 20 per cent of the voltage of the primary circuit.
The weight 31 on the vibrator 26 may be determined by experiment so' that when proper determination of the weight is secured the operation of the vibrator, due to this weight and the vibrator adjusting screws, permits duplication of voltage and current output from the secondary of the transformer with that secured when the device is operating on an alternating current of like voltage.
When DC current is used the wave is in the shape of a sawtooth with a slow rise and quick drop, the quick drop being due to the break being made quickly. This causes the magnetism of the transformer to function in one cycle as follows: 1. to increase, come to rest, 3. decrease, 4:- come to rest, developing a sawtooth curve on both sides of the line in the secondary. The current in the primary is a pulsating current about 80 volts of this pulsating current in the primary inducing about 6 volts of alternating current in the secondary, there being about 30 volts used in the induction coil.
When AC current is used the same curvature of the current in the secondary results as is impressed on the primary. The induction coil does not move the vibrator because of the inertia of the Vibrator and the rapid alternations of the current. The induction coil operates as a choke consuming about 30 volts of the impressed current leaving about volts of alternating current in the primary winding of the transformer resulting in 6 volts output in the secondary.
The rate of vibration of the vibrator may be adjusted within certain limits by means of adjusting screws 82 and 33, which project through the end of the compartment 1 of the casing, so as to secure fine adjustment of the vibrator.
The term tool is used herein as app ying to any appliance which may be connected to the socket 31 at the transformer end of the easing, and includes surgical instruments or the like.
It will be observed that the lid 3 is secured to the casing by the single bolt 5 which screws into the plate 1 1. Whenever it is necessary to inspect the interior of the device the bolt may be removed, the lid 3 taken off and the various parts inspected. This is made possible by utilizing the terminals strips 9 and 10 for conducting the supply current from the plug 1 to the line terminals 17 and 18 secured within the casing.
Whenever it is necessary to remove or replace any of the units of the device the plate 14 may be removed after the screws 15 have been taken out, and any of the units removed from the casing.
IVhile I have described more or less precisely the details of construction of my invention, yet I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself thereto, as I am aware that changes may be made in the proportion and arrangement of parts, that equivalents may be substituted, all without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.
I claim as my invention:
1. A combined portable transformer and vibratory interrupter comprising a casing having a cylindrical part and a box-like part, a transformer in said cylindrical part, an induction coil and condenser in said box-like part, electrical connections between said several elements, line terminals fixed to said casing and connected in circuit with said elements, a lid for said casing having a socket engaging plug on the exterior thereof and carrying strip conductors on the underside thereof, said conductors being electrically connected to said plug, said strip conductors arranged to engage said line terminals in said casing when said lid is in place, a single member for securing said lid in place, and a tool connection in circuit with the secondary circuit of the transformer.
2. A combined portable transformer and vibratory interrupter comprising a casing, said casing having two compartments therein, a transformer in one of said compartments, an induction coil and condenser in the other of said compartments, a removable lid for said casing, line terminal strips carried by said lid, line terminals fixed in said casing and engaged by said terminal strips when said lid is in place, means for securing said lid in place, and a connection electrically connected to the secondary circuit of the transformer for receiving a tool plug.
3. A combined portable transformer and vibratory interrupter including a casing, said casing having two compartments therein, a transformer in one of said compartments, an induction coil and condenser in the other of said compartments, a removable lid for said casing, line terminal strips carried by said lid, line terminals fixed in said casing and engaged by said terminal strips when said lid is in place, means for securing said lid in place, a connection carried by said casingfor insertion in a socket, and a connection in the secondary circuit of the transformer for receiving a tool plug.
