UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS A. EANES, OF LEESVILLE, VIRGINIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN TOBACCO-STICK HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 181,826, dated Septemberfi, 1876; application filed June 20, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS A. EANES, of Leesville, in the-county of Campbell and State ofVirgini-a, have invented a new and Improved Tobacco-Stick Holder, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a front view, and Fig. 2 a vertical transverse section, on line or :0, Fig. l, of my improved tobacco-stick holder.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
The object of my invention is to furnish to 'tobacco-raisers an improved device or implement for holding the stick on which the tobacco-leaves are hung after cutting, and saving thereby the labor of the hand required for holding the stick while the cutting-hands hang the tobacco.
The implement is ofsiinple construction, and readily carried from place to place, set into the ground, and applied to the stick.
The invention consists of a metallic rod or post, driven in the ground, with retaining-fork or foot-piece, and top bracket and clamp or fastening device to support the tobacco-stick.
In the drawing, A represents a rod or post, of metal or of wood, with iron shoe, pointed at the lower end, to be driven into the ground. The post A is steadied, when in the ground, by a foot-piece, B, that slides loosely 011 the post, andis readily driven by the foot, with its dowmvard-curved prongs, into the ground, to support the post in upright position on level or sloping land, and on hard or soft ground. A pin, a, of post A, retains the foot or fork B on the post when the same is withdrawn from the ground for being moved to any other point in the field. The upper end of the post A is applied to a socket-hole of bracket 0, turning readily therein by a collar, 1), and set-screw d. The stick on which the tobacco is hung after cutting is placed on the supporting end of the bracket 0, and retained firmly thereon by an eccentric handle, D, applied to an extensionpost of the bracket.
In place of the eccentric handle, any other clamping device may be employed, as I do not confine myself to the special construction described.
The supporting-bracket and clamping device may be preferably made ofcastiron, and serves to hold the stick, at its middle part, in horizontal position until both ends are hung with tobacco-leaves by the cutters. The stick is then taken ofl' with the leaves, the holding device moved, and a new stick inserted, the bracket turning readily on the post in any direction required.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patcut-- 1. The combination, in a tobacco-stick holder, of the staff or post A, Lurnable block O, and the retaining device or eccentric handle D, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination of the movable footpiece B with the post A, block 0, and stickretaining device D, as and for the purpose set forth.
