Description

STATES PATENT oFFicE.
EDWARD T. BRIGGS, OF SALEM, MASSACHUSETTS.
MODE 0F SUSTAINING WINDOW-SASI-IES.
Speccaton of Letters IPat-ent No. 18,182, dated September 15, 1857.
To all whom t may concern.:
Be it known that I, EDWARD T. BRIGGs, of Salem, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improved Mode of Sustaining Vindow-Sashes at Any Desired Height, and that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the principle or character which distinguishes it from all other things before known, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure l represents the front view of a window frame and sash. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the same, showing the metal strip g, support b, and spring c. Fig. 3 is an end view of sash, showing groove a, and metal strip g. Fig. 4L is a front view of support b, showing the angular groove d. Fig. 5 is a back view of support b. showing the position of spring c, when the sash is in place.
The nature of my invention consists in providing the sash with a metal strip, to slide in an angular grooved support, operated upon by a spring, and causing a friction suiflcient to sustain the sash at any desired height it may be placed.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I construct my Window frame and sash in the usual manner, and make a groove in the sash as shown at a, Fig. 3, to receive a metal strip as shown at g, Fig. 2, and Fig. 3, and insert into the window frame the angular grooved support as shown at b, Fig. 2, Fig. 4, and Fig. 5. As the metal strip g, in the sash is carried into the angular groove as shown at d, Fig. 4, it causes the support to turn as shown at b, Fig. 5, and produce a friction by spring c, against metal strip g, suiicient to sustain the sash at any desired height it may be placed.
What I claim as my improvement in sustaining window sashes at any desired height, 1s-
Furnishing the sash with the metal strip g, in combination with the angular grooved support b, and spring c, in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
EDWARD T. BRIGGS.
