POSITIONING DEVICE FOR WRITING IMPLEMENTS Filed Feb. 18, 1930 Inventor. I M Jain/es T N1) 05.
Patented Aug. 11, 1931 arsur rice JAMES T. MINGOS, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS POSITIONING DEVICE FOR WRITING IMPLEMENTS Application filed February 18, 1930.
This invention relates to a positioning device for a writing implement.
The object of the invention is to provide a device which may be easily and quickly attached to a writing implement as, for example, a pencil or pen, and be utilized by the penman as an aid in correctly grasping the instrument, and also as a means for obtaining an easy movement of the hand while writing.
Another object of the invention is to provide a guide which may be utilized in positioning the point of the instrument with relation to the edges of the writing surface and also for aiding in spacing the successive lines of writing with relation to each other upon the writing surface.
The invention consists in a positioning device for writing implements as set forth in the following specification and particularly as pointed out in the claims thereof.
Referring to the drawings:
Fig. 1 represents a side elevation of a positioning device embodying my invention, the device being illustrated attached to a pencil and in writing position.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged front elevation of a portion of the device looking at the same in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows on said line.
Fig. 4 is a detail rear elevation of the finger rest.
Fig. 5 is a. perspective View illustrating the guide.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
In the drawings, A represents a pencil and 6 is a holder in which said pencil is mounted. The holder 6 is constructed of flexiblesheet metal and is semi-tubular in form and embodies therein a clamping portion 7 which is adapted to be secured to a writing implement by means of a thumb screw 8. Projecting laterally from one side of the holder 6 is a flange constituting a stop 9, against which the thumb may rest. A finger rest 10 is provided upon the opposite side of the holder 6 from the stop 9 and is engaged by the second finger.
Serial No. 429,241.
Also projecting laterally fronrthe underside of the holder 6 at an intermediate point thereon is a stem 11 on which a support 12 is slidably mounted and is secured by means of a thumb screw 13.
A finger rest 15 is adjustably secured to the support 12, said rest having a stem 16 formed thereon which is slidably mounted in the support 12, being secured therein by means of a screw 17. The finger rest 15 embodies therein concave portions 18 and 19, the portion 18 being provided to receive the tip portion of the little finger and the portion 19 being provided to receive the tip portion of the third finger. The underneath surfaces of the finger portions 18 and 19 are adapted to contact with the writing surface, and the position of the support 12 upon the stem 11 determines the inclination of the writing instrument with relation to the writing surface.
Detachably secured to the holder 6 is guide 20 embodying therein members 21 and 22 preferably constructed of light wire. The members 21 and 22 are positioned perpendicular to each other and intersect each other at a point midway of each member. .The members 21 and 22 are provided with projections 23 and 24 respectively, regularly spaced apart and in effect constituting graduations. The guide 20 is attached to the holder 6 by means of an arm 25 having a finger portion 26 provided at one end thereof, said portion including resilient arms 27 which terminate in oppositely disposed pivot portions 28, the latter being mounted in cars 29 formed upon the holder 6. A member 30 is slidably mounted upon the arm 25 and rests against the writing implement and when the inclination of the writing implement is varied, the member 30 is moved upon the arm 25, thereby changing the position of the guide 20 to compensate for the changed position of the writing implement. Furthermore, when the device is attached to a pen and it is desired to dip the pen point in ink, the guide is lifted away from the pen point by engaging the finger portion 26 with the index finger.
The device of this invention is grasped by the right hand with the tip of the thumb thereof resting against the stop 9. The index finger is positioned at the rear of the linger piece 26 of the supporting arm for the guide 20 and the second linger rests against the portion 10 of the holder. The tips of the little finger and third linger are located within the portions 18 and 19 respectively of the finger rest 15.
- If it is desired to vary the inclination of the writing implement, the support 12 is adjusted upon the stem 11, as required.
To position the device upon the writing surface, the penman utilizes the guide members 21 and 22, the former being employed for the purpose of spacing the point of the instrument a predetermined distance from the left hand edge of the writing surface, and the member being employed for the purpose of spacing the point of the instrument a predet rmined distance from the top edge of the writing surface. The guide 21 is furthermore employed for the purpose of enabling the pemnan to write the successive lines parallel to the top edge of the writing surface and also parallel to each other, While the guide member 22 may be employed for properly spacing the succe ve lines a uniform distance apart.
If for any reason the inclination of the Writing implement is changed, the member is adjusted upon the arm 25, thereby tipping the guide members a sufficient amount to compensate for the change of the inclination of the writing implement and maintain the guide members in parallel relation to the writing surface.
If it is not desired to utilize the guide 20, it may be detached from the holder 6 by springing the arms 27 toward each other and removing the pivot portions 28 from the ears 29.
I claim:
