' IMPROVEMENT IN CARRIERS FOR BARRELS, BOXES, &c.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 181,797, dated September 5, 1876 application filed June 21, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHANIEL OAK, of Exeter, in the county of Penobscot and State of Maine, have inventedcertaiu new and useful Improvements in Carriers for Barrels, Boxes, &c.; and 1 do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, that will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- 'Figure 1 shows a .plan of frame-bottom; Fig. 2, an end viewwith ice hooks attached; Fig. 3, a side view; Fig. 4, a detail of hook and attaching-band.
Same letters show like parts.
My invention consists of certain improvements in carriers for barrels, boxes, 850,, of the general construction of that shown in my patent of April 18, 1876; and consists in certain devices whereby the carrying-frame is made adjustable in regard to its length between the cross-bars, as well as its width; in
improved devices for attaching the supporting-hooks to the frame; in a check strap or stop for regulating the swing of the hooks and in an improved construction of hooks for certain purposes.
Referring to the drawing, Fig. 1 shows a plan of the carrying-frame a, b b being the side pieces, and 0 o the cross-bars. Upon the side pieces b are placed metallic bands d d, capable of sliding lengthwise on said pieces, and secured by pins in any desired position, To these bands are attached cross-bars, the distance between them being regulated by sliding the bands d d on the side pieces, as stated. The cross-bars may he so attached to said bands that the distance between the side pieces may be regulated. This may be done substantially as in my former patent by inserting them in bands 6, attached to the upper or lower side of the bands d; or in sockets f upon the inner side of said bands, and securing them by pins, or by forming right and left hand screws 9 on the ends of said cross-bars, screwing into sockets h. In either manner both the width and length of the frame a may be adjusted to packages of difi'erent sizes, enabling them to be carried steadily and securely.
My method of attaching the supportinghooks to the frame is shown at t,- and consists in providing the side pieces of said frame with bandsj surrounding them, to which the supporting-hooks may be pivoted. weakening the frame by boring. Either one or more bands may be used, depending on the construction of the book.
My means for regulating the swing of hook or grapple consists of a check strap or stop, K, either pivoted to the frame in such a manner as to swing sidewise, or rigidly secured thereto. This stop has a slot, l, therein, through which the hook passes, or in which it is secured. If the check It be pivoted to the frame it serves to regulate the side swing of the book, while in any case the slot controls the longitudinal swing.
My improved hooks are more particularly intended for handling ice; and consist of two grapples, m a, crossing, and pivoted to each other below the frame a, and attached to the side pieces of said frame by links 0. The effect of this construction is to cause them to grapple the ice or other article, its weight tending to force the points of the grapples into it. The check or stop It regulating the swing of the hooks may be provided with holes 1), through which pins may be inserted, limiting the movement of the hooks; and the stem of the hook may also be perforated, enabling it to be made stationary, if desired.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The carrying-frame a, consisting of side pieces b b, provided with sliding bands d d, to which cross-bars c c are attached, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of the side pieces I) b and cross-bars c 0, adj nstable upon each other, whereby both the length and width of the frame may be regulated, substantially as set forth. 7
3. In a carrying-frame, the bands j, surrounding the side pieces, in combination with the supporting-hooks secured thereto, as set forth.
This saves.,
4. In a carrying-frame, the combination of In testimony that I claim the foregoing I supporting-hooks with a check or stop, It, subhave hereunto set my hand this 14th day of stantially as and for the purposes set forth. J une, 1876.
5. In combination with a carrying-frame, NATHANIEL OAK. the grapples m n, pivoted to each other, and Witnesses: v secured to said frame by links, substantially MOSES H. LUFKIN, as and for the purposes specified. ALBERT P. SHAW.
