My invention relates to registers or analogous devices in which air flow is controlled by movable plates or slats.
More particularly it relates to such appliances having a cast metal frame, in which difliculty has been experienced in drilling or tapping holes for the pivots of the slats; in order to drill such holes economically, it is necessary to use multiple or gang drills,
and in case one drill breaks or requires sharpening, the entire gang is thrown out of service. I
To overcome such difficulties, and other objectionable features of a structure in which the slat-pivots are mounted directly in the frame, I provide a structure or arrangement in which sheet-metal slat-sup ports separate from the frame have holes out p or punched in them to receive the slat pivot trunnions; the slats are assembled with these supports, and the latter connected into the cast metal frame.
7 The invention also includes other im-- proved features of structure or arrangement, as sufficiently referred to hereinafter.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation (with reference to a wall mounting) of a register embodying the invention in one form.
39 Fig. 2 is a rear elevation, enlarged.
Fig. 3 is a section at Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a section at 44, Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a section at 55, Fig. 3.
Fig. 6 is an elevation of one slat support.
Fig. 7 shows an operating strip.
Fig. 8 is a perspective of end portions of a sheet metal slat.
The frame 10 is of cast metal, including the face flange 11 with grille 38, and inner or back flange 12 surrounding the central opening or grille. It has been customary heretofore to drill holes in the back flange.
to receive the trunnions, pivot rods, or other devices for supporting the movable shutters or slats, and this procedure involves delay, undue expense and other disadvantages as briefly referred to above and as understood by persons skilled in the art. so I provide slat supports 13 of sheet metal,
thus firmly securing the slat supports in separate from the frame. The slat supports have "means for the p1votal mounting of the 'slats, and the frame is adapted for the ready connection of the supports to it. Fig. 6 showsone of the supports 13 completed and ready for placementin the frame. It is generallylong and rectangular and has near its ends opposite ears 14 for connection to the frame, and also has aligned spaced holes 15 'to' receive the slat trunnions. These holes are usually drilled in therelatively sheet metal strip by gang drills, or-may in some cases be punched, and all difiiculties involved 1n the drllling of holes in the cast "metal frame are avoided.
"lhe face plate of the frame has at each side socket formation 16, and opposite each of these sockets the rear edge of flange 12 has a recess or notch 17. The supporting strips13 are placed against inner faces of v the flange at opposite sides of the frame aperture, and secured by bending the ears 14.- into the socket 16 and notches 17 in a manner which is obvious in Figs. 4 and 5,
position. i e
-The slats 20 are of relatively thin sheet metal and their upper, edges are rolled to tubular form as at 21, and these tubular formations are extended from the ends of 8.0
the slats to form trunnions 22 which are against the corresponding supporting strip 13 and 1S retained in position by slots 31 through which the adjacent slat trunnions 22 pass, these slots being elongated to permit reciprocation of the opening strip. Near one edge of the strip holes 32 are punched and studs 33 are riveted into these holes, and the studs project into'the cam slots 25 of theslats as also clearly explained in Fig.
CTL
3. The slats are adjusted by reciprocation of strip in an obvious way. At one edge near the center strip 30 has a member bent at a right angle and a sheet metal thumb piece 36 has its ends bent to engage the edges of member 35. This thumb piece projects through a slot 37 provided for it in the grille 38.
I claim:
1. A register or analogous appliance comprising a cast metal frame including a flange surrounding an aperture, and slat supporting strips of sheet metal lying against the flange at opposite sides of the aperture and provided with ears, the frame having socket formations into which the ears are bent to retain the strips in place.
2. A register or analogous appliance comprising a cast metal frame including a flange surrounding an aperture, and slat supporting strips of sheet metal lying against the flange at opposite sides of the aperture and provided with ears, the frame having in its front face socket formations and the flange having at its rear edge notch formations, the ears of the supporting strips being bent into the socket and notch formations to retain the strip in position.
8. A register or analogous appliance comprising a cast metal frame including a flange surrounding an aperture, and slat supporting strips of sheet metal lying against the flange at opposite sides of the aperture and secured to the frame, the strips having spaced holes to receive slat trunnions, and slats having at their ends trunnions inserted in the holes, the slats also having at one end an angularly bent portion provided with a cam slot.
4-. A register or analogous appliance comprising a cast metal frame including a flange surrounding an aperture, and slat supportin strips of sheet metal lying against the flange at opposite sides of the aperture and secured to the frame, the strips having spaced holes to receive slat trunnions, and slats having at their ends trunnions inserted in the holes, the slats also having at one end, an angularly bent portion; provided with a cam slot, and an opening strip having slots receiving slat trunnions which hold the strip in place and permit reciprocation, the strip being provided with studs engaging in the slat cam slots.
5. A register or analogous appliance comprising a cast metal frame including a flange surrounding an aperture, and slat supporting strips of sheet metal lying against the flange at opposite sides of the aperture and secured to the frame, the strips having spaced holes to receive slat trunnions, and slats having at their ends trunnions inserted in the holes, the slats also having at one end an angularly bent portion provided with a cam slot, and an opening strip having slots receiving slat trunnions which hold the strip in place and permit reciprocation, the strip being provided with studs engaging in the slat cam slots, the operating strip also having an angularly bent lug and a thumb piece secured to the lug and accessible at the front of the frame. a
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature.
JOSEPH V. PETRELLI.
