IMPROVEMENT IN KNIFE-CLEANERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l 8 l,764, dated September 5, 1876; application filed July 8, 1876.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RINALDO A. BARKER, of Topeka, in the county of Shawnee and State of Kansas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Knife-Cleaners; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

This invention is a simple device for .cleaning and polishing knives, forks, &c., in a convenient and cleanly manner and it consists, mainly, in certain details of construction, which will be fully described hereinafter.

In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my invention; Figs. 2 and 4, longitudinal sectional elevations; Fig. 3, a transverse sectional elevation.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and-use my invention, I. will now proceed to describe fully its construction and manner of operation.

Arepresents a box constructed of any proper size and suitable material, which is left open at one end, as shown, and is provided with a suitable cover, at, either hinged or sliding, as may be preferred. a represents a cross-bar, forming either a part of one end of the box or attached thereto, which serves to unite the sides, as shown. B represents a pad or equivalent rubbing-surface, which is secured to the bot-tom of the box, as shown. 0 represents a block of suitable size and proper material, which is held in the front end of the box, in such manner as to be capable of moving in a vertical direction. a 0 represent springs of any proper construction, which are adapted to press the block in a downward direction, as shown. 0 represents a pad or equivalent rubbing-surface, which forms the lower face of the block. 0? represents a central vertical opening, extending from the upper face of the block to the rubbing-surface, as shown.

From this description the operation will be readily understood. The space in rear of the block having been filled with powdered brick, and the central opening having been filled with water, the device is ready for use. The

knife to be polished is inserted in the slit between the rubbing-surfaces of the box and block, and moved forward and back until sufficiently acted upon. The knife, in its rearward movement, takes brick from the brickreceptacle, and in its forward movement carries it between the pads, where it receives moisture.

e The box may be securely fastened in any desired place, so as to be always ready for use.

By means of this construction, an otherwise unpleasant operation can bequickly arid conveniently performed in a cleanly manner.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The device described, consisting of the box A, having a padded bottom, the padded 0, having the vertically-extended opening '0,

adapted to hold a column of water, and pressure-springs c, as described, the block 0 lying upon the padded bottom at one end of the box, as shown, the construction being such that a knife being polished rests upon a plane surface extending into the brick-dust chamber, as described.
