My invention relates to a new and improved awning.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide an improved awning which can be '55, Combined with a window frame so that the awning can be readily manipulated.
Another object of my invention is to provide an awning which can be conveniently M wound up to be housed in the upper part of the window frame and which can be conveniently extended to occupy a number of difierent positions.
' Another object ofmy invention is to provide an awning device which can be applied to the frame of a window and which can be readily caused to project from the window frame and which can be caused to rigidly extend from the window frame in M a series of regulated positions.
Another object of my invention is to provide a simple and eflicient device which can be readily manufactured and assembled with a window frame.
,l Other objects of my invention will be set forth in-the following description and drawings which illustrate a preferred embod-iment thereof it being understood that the above general statement of the objects of my invention is intended to merely general'ly explain the same and not to limit it in any manner.

'Ihe device is applied to any ordinary window "having a frame F, a lower windw sash 1, and an upper window sash :2. The awn I 3 ing material is connectedto the outer ends of the wooden inserts 5 by means of tacks or screws 6. The outer ends of the wooden inserts 5 are provided with recesses into which the ears 7a of discs 7 fit. These no cars 7a, of the disc 7 are connected by means of screws 8 to the wooden inserts 5. Each disc 7 is provided with a bearing pin-9. Each bearing pin 9 fits turnably ina threaded bushing 10. The threaded bushing 10 is proon vided with one-piece washer and lock nut 11 which are both internally threaded so that they can be screwed upon the external threading of the shank of the bushing 10 to firmly clamp the bushing against the wall of the guide 12. Similar means are used to connect the other bearing pin 1-9 of the roller to the member 4 and to the other guide 12. The roller is thus held at the upper end of frame F, so that it is free to turn. As shown in Fig. a sprocket 14 is connected to the bearing pin 9, because the other pin 10 merely turns freely without being positively actuated. The sprocket 14 is provided with a chain 15 by means of which the sprocket 14: can be turned in either direction. The chain 15 is connected to alower sprocket 16 which is mounted upon a bearing pin Said bearing pin 17 is held to a wall of the guide 12 by means of a bushing 10a 35v which corresponds to the bushing 10 and by means of a combination lock nut and washer device 11a which corresponds to the device 11. The lower bearing pin 17 is provided with a handle 18 which connected thereto by means of a set screw. The handle 18 is provided with a manipulating head 21 which is part of apin 20 that can slide transversely or horizontally with respect to the handle 18. The pin 20 isprovided with a groove 22 and a pin 23 is provided in the" outer end oflthe handle 18 which limits the transverse sliding movement of the pin 20. The inner end of the ,pin -20.can enter a stop member 24:; which iorms anrxtensionof bushing 10a, in order to hold the handle 18 locked in position, when this is desired. Vertically movable slides 26 are located adjacent the guides 12. These slides 26 are provided with recesses 27 and tongues 28 are formed of the metal which has been bent back to form said recesses 27. Said tongues 28 make sliding contact with the adjacent surfaces of guides 12. As clearly shown in Fig. 6, the main bodies of the slides 26 have slidable contact with the front surfaces of- 'the inner walls of the guides 12, and the tongues 28.

When it is desired to wind up the awning,
the parts are moved to the position shown in Fig. 7.' In this position, each slide 26 is at the upper end of the corresponding guide 12. In thewound-up or inoperative position, the awning is located within a protective hood 36. The inner and laterally bent ends otthe ll-shaped arm 31 are inserted through suitable openings in; the slides 26,
so as to provide a pivotal connection. As shown in Fig. 5, the inner walls of the fixed guides 12 are provided with enlarged openings 30a through which the bushings 10 and 10a'can be passedso that these parts can be moved up and down to their proper position in which position they are then clamped.
Each of the slides 26 is provided with an opening 35 at the lower end thereof. As clearly shown in Figs. 4t and 7, tongues 28 are provided at the upper and at the lower end offeach slide 26 in order to efficiently guide the sliding movement of each said slide.
In order to move the awning to the operative position shown in Fig. 2, it ismerely necessary to pull upon the head 21 so as to release the pin 20 from the stop member 24 and from the arn1'32. Upon turning the handle 18, the chain 15 is actuated so as to turn the awning roller in the direction in which .the slides 26 are permitted to descend. V
The downward movement of the left-hand slide 26 shown in Fig. 4 is limited by the stop 28a, withwhich the lower tongues 28 of said slide 26 contact. The corresponding 7 angle.

the slides are firmly held against upward movement, and the member, 31 is held against tilting movement. Hence, the device is very stable in case'of a high wind. Likewise, the upper part of the awning acts as a shade, while the lower part of the awning projects outwardly/- I have shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, but it is clear that numerous changes and omissions could be made with out departing from the spirit of my invention.

An awning device of the type adapted to be connected to a window frame, said device having awning material wound upon a roller, a pair of vertical hollow guides adapted to be connected to said window frame, the adjacent walls of said guides being vertically slotted, slides associated with said slotted walls, the bodies of said slides being adjacent the outer surfaces of said slotted walls, and said slides having inwardly bent tongues which slidably contact with the inner surfaces of said adjacent walls, said slides having tongues at their upper ends, a cross-bar connected to said tongues, a pivoted bar connected to said slides below said cross-bar, the awning material which is connected to said roller passing around said cross-bar and being connected to said pivoted bar, a turnable pin mounted in one of said guide members, means connecting said pin and said roller so that they fit? turn in unison, a handle connected to said 7 pin, the head of said handle forming part of a laterally slidable locking pin, said pivoted bar having a perforated sector having holes adapted to cooperate with said locking pin.
