UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE JOHN ROEMER,OF CHAMPION, MIOHiGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN LA'RD-OILYLAMPS.
. Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 181,722, dated August 29, 1876; application filed February 14, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN RoEMER, of (Jhumpion, in the county of Marquette and State of Michigan, have inventeda new and Improved Lard-Oil Lamp, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists of pipes for receiving the heat of the flame, and conducting it down into the oil-chamber for warming the oil; the object being-to make lard-oil lanterns capable of use in very cold weather. I prefer to mount a hollow drum on the pipes over the flame for obtaining the heat; but good results are obtained without the drum.
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of my improved lantern with a drum mounted on the pipes. Fig. 2 is a top view, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on the line 3 y of Fig. 1. I
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
Ais the oil-chamber of thelamp, from which two pipes, B, of copper or other good heatconducting metal, extend up a suitable distance above the burners G, and have a drum,
D, mounted on them, as shown; or they may bend over, so that the upper ends terminate directly over the flame, opening downward, so as to receive currents of hot air, and conduct the-heat down into the oil-chamber, to keep the oil in a fluid state.
When the drum is used I prefer to connect one pipe with the-interior of thedrum, and arrange the other to pass up throughit, so that, by having an opening intothe drum, a current will be established down one pipe and up the other.
I am aware that it is not new to provide a lamp with a tube having funnel-mouth over the burner, and extending through the oil; but
What I claim is- 1 The combination, in a lard-oil lamp, of the drum D and oil-chamber A, connected by heatconducting air-pipes B, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
JOHN ROEMER. Witnesses:
J. D. LooNEY, J. P. MONDLOCH.
