MERCHANDISE DISPLAY BOX Filed March 5. 1929' 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 gm: 1:. Marti 1:), Qatar L this type.
" 1* lgure 1,
Patented July 28, 1931 UNITED sure ALBERT I1; MARTIN, 'OFSHAK ERHE IG-H'IS, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE VLGHEK TOO L'C OMF r PATENT sot-mics PARTY, OF" o-IJEvELANnyoHIo, A CORPORATION ororno MERCHANDISE DISPLAY BOX My invention relates to display boxes for articles of merchandise such as tools andthe like, and the-principal object ot-my invention 1 is to provide a new and improved device of In the drawings accompanying thisspecification andforming apart of this application I have shown, for purposeslof illustration, one form which my invention may assume and in these drawings: v
Figure 1 is a perspective View of this illusv trative embodiment of my invention showing the cover in closed' position,
Figure 2 is a fragmentary section showing the cover in contact with the boxas shown in Figure 3 is a perspective view showing the cover in openposition, V
Figure 4 is a fragmentary section showing the cover in open position as shown in Fig- 1 ure 3,
Figure 5 is a side'elevation of Figure'Q showing the display holder'in place, while Figure 6 is a top plan view withthecover removed, v 1
I show myinvention embodied in a display box 11 comprising a base 13from' which rise" four side walls 14' suitably secured to the base 13 and each having a scroll portion 18 substantially near the top, two of the opposing side walls 14 havingcut'away portions 20 along their top edges for 'aflord'ing access to the interior of the edge of a cover. Eachof the four side walls 14 are provided with two inwardlyprojecting lips 15 positionedsubstantially near the topedges of the 'fo'urj'w'a-Ils 1 1 and immediately below the scroll portions 18 and formed by cutting away small arch' shaped portions of the side walls 14 and then bending such portions inwardly. -The-portions of the side walls 14 immediately above said cut away portions are forced inwardly forming small projections 19, while mounted in the bottom section 13 of the display box 11 are a plurality of upwardly projecting pegs 16 extending from the inner surface of the bottom section 13 upwardly substantially the height of the lips 15 from the bottom section 13, the pegs 16 herein shown being nails driven through the bottom section 15 from the outside thereof and arranged in tiers suit- 1929.' SerialNb 344; 251.
of the four w'alls 14 is provided with a skirt section 21 formed integrally' therewith and has outwardly extending *flanges 22 extendeompletely therea'round, the outer 'pellPll-EIlQS of theflanges QZbeing adapted torest upon the pr'o3ections 19in the side walls" 14 whenthe cover 12 is insertedwith the skirt section -21 extending toward the bot tom section 13 as'shown-"in Figure 1. The cover 12 is also adapted tobe' inserted-within the four-walls 14; with the skir't sectionQ'l extending away from the bottom section 13 and when the cover 12 is in* such position the outerperipheries of the-cover 12-rest upon the lips 15 on the side walls 14 asshown-in Figure 3.
The innerside of the cover 12 is provided with lithographic representations Qet of the varlous size wrenches contained in the display box 11 and further is providedwith,
straps- 23 suitably'seeured thereonand adapted to securely grasp and" hold thereon an article of merchandiseherein shown' as a wrench 17.
A quickly attachable =anddetachable display holder- 25 of any suitable type'provides pegs 16' being varied according to the d ifierent sizes of wrenches tobe suported by the display'box 11. "In the usual practice the display box 11 is filled with wrenches and the display holderis loosely mounted on top of the wrenches immediately below the cover 12 and one wrench is usuallymoun-ted on the inner side of the cover 12bythe strap-23, Thecover-is' placed" wit-hin'thetop edgesbt' thefour side walls 14 with the outer peripheries ofthe flanges22-resting on and supported by the small projections19; The display box 11 containing the wrenches thenis ready to be shipped for display anduse.
A merchant receiving a display box 11 carrying the wrenches 17 as above set forth first removes the cover 12 and holder 25 and then turns the cover over and inserts it within the top edges of the four side walls 14 with the skirt section 21 extending upwardly, the cover 12 being held and supported in this position by the lips 15 engaging and supporting the outer peripheries of the cover 12. The display holder 25 then is brought into position to support the display box 11. On ac count of the lithographic representations on the cover of the various sizes of wrenches contained within the display box 11 it is neces- 5 sary to have but one wrench on display.
of the type described. At the same time it also will be obvious to those skilled in the art that the embodiment of my invention herein shown and described embodies advantages and uses other than those particularly pointed out or suggested herein, and also that this particular embodiment of my invention disclosed herein may be variously changed, modified, or used without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing the advantages therein, wherefore it will be understood that the disclosure herein is illustrative only, and that my invention is not limited thereto.
' I claim:
1. A display box, as for containing and exhibiting articles of merchandise such as tools and the like, comprising: a box for containing a supply of said articles and having connected bottom and side walls; .a cover readily adaptable to be inserted and held within the side walls of said box with either surface of said cover outwardly disposed and substantially parallel with reference to said bottom wall, to provide a shipping top for said box when said cover is positioned therein with one side out and a display top when r it is positioned therein with its other side of said cover outwardly disposed with reference to said bottom wall, toprovide a shipping top for said box when said cover 1s positioned therein with one side out and a within the sides of said box with either sur-' face of said cover out, to provide a shipping top for said box when said cover is positioned therein with one side out and a display top when it is positioned therein with its other side out; means for supporting on said other side of said cover a sample of said articles contained in said box; and representations of the various articles contained in said box mounted on said other side of said cover.
at. A display box, as for containing and exhibiting articles of merchandise such as tools and the like, comprising: a box for con taining a supply-of said articles, having side walls provided with interior projections disposed inwardly of the edges of said side walls; a cover readily adaptable to be inserted within the sides of said box and supported by said projections with either surface of said cover out, to provide a shipping top for said box when said cover is positioned therein with one side out, and a display top when it is positioned therein with its other side out; and means for supporting on said other side of said cover a sample of said articles contained in said box.
5. A display box, as for containing and exhibiting articles of merchandise such as tools and the like, comprising: a box for containing a supply of said articles, having side walls provided with interior projections disposed vat different levels; a cover readily adaptable to beinserted within the sides of said box with either surface of said cover out, and supported by said projections at one level to provide a shipping top for said box when said cover is positioned therein with one side out and supported by said projections at a different level to provide a display top when it is positioned therein with its other side out; and means for supporting on said other side of said cover a sample of said articles contained in said box.
