Description

July 28, 1931. c. F. ALLE R GENTRIFUGAL SEPARATOiI BEARING Filed Aug. so. 1928 r uv wq IWIAIEJS v wfzz u.
Patented July 28, l931 v UNITED STATES Q PAT Q F C CONRAD FERDINAND ALLER, or STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN, Assrenon mo THE DE LAVAU SEPARATOR COMPANY, on NEW YORK, N. Y.,JA.;CCR{PGRAEION OE'NEVJ JERSEY CENTRIFUGAL sErARAron' BEARING Application filed August 30, 1928, Serial No.
In centrifugal separator bowls difficulty is experienced in effectively preventing the entrance of moisture into the bowl spindle hearing, which is usually mounted with some elasticity in the separatorframe. One of the main objects of this invention is to so support and enclose the spindlebearing as to make it possible to provide means for effec tively excluding moisture therefrom. The invention comprises a bearing support and means associated therewith to 'preventpenetration of moisture to the spindle bearing. The invention also comprises certain preferred structural features which have been found to provide a satisfactory and efficient spindle hearing as well as to effectuate, in a high degree, the object of preventing moisture penetration.
The drawing, which illustrates such an emv bodiment of the invention, is a vertical sectional view of the bearing, the part of the spindle adjacent thereto, the bearing housing and supporting means and the moisture b, which is preferably, but not necessarily, a
excluding means.
The bowl spindle a turns within a bearing ball bearing, as shown. I The inner ring of the bearing is. confined, to and bottom, between a shoulder '61 on the spindle and a spring plate 6 carried by the spindle. The outer ring of the bearing is confined, top and bottom, be-
tween a shoulder g on a bearing housing f and an elastic ring it held in a groove in said housing. I
Surrounding housing 7 is a fixed frame i. An elastic device, such as a spring is, is placed between frame 71 and housing f, the face of the latter being dished in to afford a seat for the spring. v I
From the top of housing f extends outward aliood on the downwardly extending skirt of which surrounds and is spaced from the upper end of frame 71. From the top of hous ing f extends inward a member having a neck n which surrounds and is spaced from the spindle. Secured to the spindle is a collar 0 whichrhas a skirt that surrounds and is spaced from neck n. i In the described construction the non-rotating bearing housing 7 participates in the the skirt of collar 0.

vibrations and oscillations of spindle a and bearing Z), making itpossib'le to provide a very narrow clearance between the neck n and the spindle and between the neck a and The bearing is thus very effectively protected against the entrance of moisture from the bowl housing.
In order that the bearing housing and the hood carried thereby shall not touchv the frame whenthe bowl is vibrating, there should be a large playbetwcen thehousing and the frame. The enclosure of the upper,
part of the-frame 2' by thelhood m tends to ters Patent is p 1. A bearing for a separator bowl spindle comprising, in combination with the'bowl spindle, a spindle bearing, a surrounding frame, a bearing housing, an elastic support for the bearing housing between the same and the frame, a hood extending outward from.
the bearing. housing over and down around and spaced from the frame, and means to exclude penetration of moisture into the space over the bearing between the bearing housing-' and the spindle.
2. A hearingcomprising, in combination with the bowl spindle, a spindle bearing, a surrounding frame, a bearing housing, an. elastic support for the bearing housing between the same and the frame, a hood. extending outward from the bearing housing over'and down around and spaced from the frame,a memberextending inward from the bearing housing having an upwardly extending neck surrounding the spindle, and a collar carried by the spindle above said neck and having'a depending skirt surrounding said neck.
3. A bearing for a separating bowl spindle" comprising, in combination withthe spindle, a bearing housing, a ball bearing the outer ring of which is seated in. saidhousing and the inner ring'of which is fixed on the spindle,
a frame surroundlng saldhousing, an, outi ii for a separator bowl spindle,
wardly extending hood carried by the housing and extendingover and surrounding the upper part of the frame, an inwardly Xtending member having a neck surrounding the spindle, and a collar on the spindle having a skirt surrounding said neck.
4; A bearing for a separator bowl comprising, in combination with the bowl spindle, a surrounding housing in which the bearing is seated, aframe, an elastic support between the frame and the housing, and means for excluding moisture from the bearing; said means comprising a hood on the housing which surrounds the upper part of the frame and between which and the frame is a relatively wide clearance, a member which is carried by the spindle, and a second member which is carried by the housing, and surrounds the spindle and is surrounded by the first memher and with which it has a relatively narrow clearance.
In testimony of which invention, I have hereunto set my hand, at Stockholm, Sweden, on this 15th day of August, 1928'.
