IMPROVEMENT IN STREET-LAMPS;

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 181,638, dated August 29, 1876; application file July 17, 1876.

To all whom it may-concern:

Be it known that I, LEwIs O. CAMERON, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Street-Lamps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.

In this invention the glass body of the lamp is supported upon a grooved ring, to the under side of which are pivoted two semicircular perforated plates, arranged to swing horizontally and close the opening in the lower end of the lamp. The invention further con sists in providing the lamp with a detachable holder or reservoir for gasoline or other light hydrocarbon, as hereinafter described.

In the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved lamp. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the bot-tom plates.

The cylindrical glass body A of the lamp is supported upon a flanged base-ring, B, which.

is, in turn, attached to a curved standard or arm, 0, of post D. The opening in the lower end of the body A is made very large, in or der to permit easy access to the interior, for the purpose of cleaning it quickly and conveniently.

If left entirely open the wind would cause the flame to flicker more or less, and hence I provide plates E E for closing the same. The

plates are semicircular in form, and pivoted' to the loose ring B, so as to swing horizontally. They may be easily separated and opened when it is desired to obtain access to the interior of the lamp for lighting or cleaning, and also easily closed, and yet are not liable to be opened accidentally. They are perforated, to admit the requisite amount of air. The cap F is provided with a flange, which fits into the top of the body A, and has a bent hollow arm, G, by which it is connected to the top of the standard 0.

The means of connection is a bayonet-joint, a, so that when the cap F is adjusted in place on the top of the body A, it is prevented from lateral movement, and thus holds said body firm and steady upon the base-ring B; but

when it is requiredto remove the body A, or to substitute another, the bayonet-joint at allows the cap F to be raised vertically, and then turned laterally or to one side.

Constructed as above described, the lamp is designed as a substitute for other street gas-lamps; but it is frequently necessary to illuminate the outskirts of towns and cities beyond the limits to which gas-pipes have been laid. To adapt this lamp for use in such places, 1 provide it with a detachable liquidhydrocarbon attachment,consisting of a gasoline holder or reservoir, H, which is supported directly above the lamp proper by means of a bent arm, I, which terminates in a socket, b, that fits an extension of the standard 0, so that it may be readily detached when required, for the purpose of refilling it, or when the lamp is to be used for burning gas.

What I claim is- 1. The perforated semicircular plates E E,

pivoted to the base-rin g, and adapted to swing horizontally, for opening or, closing the lower end of the lamp, as shown and described.
