To all 107mm it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADoLPH F. PRAHM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis,-in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Signal-Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
In railroad signaling it is especially desir able that switch-stand lamps be capable of burning for a very considerable period and that they be of such construction that they may be lighted under any Weather conditions, even where the wind is blowing a gale.
In my Patent No. 802,085 I have described a burner capable of maintaining a proper and continuous flame for a considerable number of days without trimming. Such a lamp maybe placed upon a switch-stand and need not be taken in at any time, but will remain permanently in position, burning day and night, and only needing attention for filling once in ten days or such matter and wick-trimming possibly bimonthly. With such a lamp means need beprovided by which the wick may be lighted under any conditions of weather, and such is the object of my present invention.
The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention.
Figure 1 is a central vertical section of an ordinary switch-stand lamp embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the burner and associated matchpockets,
and Fig. 3 a perspective view of a desirable and convenient form of abrasive tool.
In the drawings, indicates a lamp-body of any desired form capable of protecting the flame against the wind. With n this body is mounted a lamp-reservoir 11, provided with any desirable burner 12, preferably of the form shown in my patent above mentioned, the wick 13 having its upper end doubled back upon itself and returned into the enlarged upper end of the wick-tube 1 1. Surrounding the upper end of the wick-tube 14 is a clip 15, formed at each side of the wick-tube into .a vertical match-pocket 16, in which may be placed a short portion of the head end of a match 17, so that the head thereof will project slightly above the burner-cap 18 and in close proximity to the wick 13. Formed in the side of casing 10, preferably in substantial alinement with the pockets 16, is an opening 2(), surrounded by a threaded flange 21, adapted to receive a threaded cap 22, by means of which the opening 20 may be tightly closed. The flange 21 is of such diameter as to permit the introduction of a scraper 23, which is provided with overhanging flanges 24, beneath which may be slipped a short piece of sandpaper or other abrasive 25.
In operation when it is desired to relight a lamp when the Wind is high the operator may remove the top 10 of the cover 10 and place a short secti on of the upper end of the match 17 in one of the pockets 1.6, as shown. The cap 10 of the casing may then be replaced and cap 22 removed. The scraper 23 may then be introduced through flange 21 and the match struck by means of the abrasive, whereupon the wick will be lighted. The cap 22 will then be returned to position and the opening tightly closed.
It will be readily understood that a slide or any other suitable means may be used to close opening 20 but I believe the construction shown to'be preferable.
I claim as my invention The combination with a lamp-casing having an opening in its side and a burner mounted in the casing, of a vertical match-pocket arranged at one edge of the wick-tube to sup port a match with its head exposed above the burner structure, and a removable clo sure for the opening in the casing whereby an abrasive tool may be inserted through the side opening of the casing to light the match, and said opening thereafter closed.
