UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
The present invention relates to a saw operating mechanism in the form of an attachment to be operatively mounted and connected with a tractor so that a saw may be reciprocated.
An important object of the invention resides in the provision of an attachment of this nature which may be used for operating the saw to reciprocate both in horizontal and vertical planes. I
A further important object of the invention resides in the provision of an attachment of this nature which is simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and install, thoroughly efficient and reliable in use and operation and otherwise well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
With the above and numerous other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a top plan view ofa tractor with my attachment associated therewith. Figure 2 is a rear elevation thereof. Figure 3 is a perspective view of the operating mechanism. Figure 4 is a perspective View of the gearing, and
Figure 5 is a detail elevation of the take off mechanism.
Referring to the drawings in detail it will be seen that the letter T denotes a conventional tractor. An elongated transverse plate 5 is disposed in a vertical plane across the rear of the tractor being mounted on the rear mud guards or supported in any other suit- 0 able manner. A pair of cleats 6 and 7 are disposed vertically on the rear face of the plate 5 and have extended therethrough a pair of horizontal rods 8 on which is slidable a block 9 between the cleats 6 and 7. A vertical standard 10 is supported on adjacent ends of the rods 8 to one side of the tractor by suitable couplings 11 and 12. A rest 14 is swiveled on the upper end of the standard 10. A vertical bar 15 is fixed to the slidable block 9. A bracket 16 is on the upper end thereof. A pitman rod 17 may be pivotally engaged as at 18 with the bottom of the bar 15 or as at 19 with the bracket 16. Asaw guide 20 may be clamped as at 21 on the rods 8 to be disposed in a vertical position and guide the saw 22 pivotally engaged asat 23 with the pitman rod 17 or the guide 20 may .be suitably fixed on the rest 14: when the pitman rod 17 is engaged with the bracket 16. Thus it will be seen that the saw may be positioned to operate either in avertical or' horizontal plane. The slide block 9 is operated by a pitman rod 23 pivoted thereto and pivoted ofi' center to a Wheel 24 on a shaft 25. The shaft 25 is j ournalled longitudinally of the tractor to one side through the plate 5 and in a suitable bracket structure 26. A beveled gear 27 on the forward end of the shaft 25 meshes with a beveledpinion 28 on a shaft 29 journalled in the bracket structure 26 and a bracket structure 30. A beveled gear 31 on the upper end of the shaft 29 meshes with a beveled pinion 32 on a shaft 33 disposed transversely across the tractor being journalled ina bearing 34 on the bracket 30. This shaft 33 is also journalled in a bracket 35 on the other side of the tractor and has a pulley wheel 36 thereon. The belt 37 is trained over the pulley wheel 36 and also over-the usual power take off pulley 38.
7 Itis thought that the construction, operation, utility and advantages of this invention will now be quite apparent to those skilled in this art without a more detailed description thereof.
The present embodiment of the invention has been described in considerable detail merely for the purposes of exemplification since in actual practice it attains the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description.
It is apparent that changes in the details of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be'resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
1. An attachment for tractors comprising a plate having means for securing it, transversely across the rear of the tractor, a Wheel rotatable on the plate, means for operatively connecting the Wheel with the tractor to be driven thereby, a pair of cleats, a pair of rods in the cleats, a slide block on the rods, a pitman rod connecting the slide block and the wheel to translate the rotary motion of the Wheel into reciprocatory motion of the block, a guide, means for supporting the guide either in a vertical or horizontal position, a saw in the guide, a pitman. connected with the saw and means for attaching the pitman to the block.
v2. An attachment for tractors comprising a plate having means for securing it, transversely across the rear of the tractor, a Wheel rotatable 0n the plate, means for operatively connecting the Wheel with the tractor to be driven thereby, a pair of cleats, a pair of rods in the cleats, a slide block on the rods, a pit-- man rod connecting the slide block and the Wheel to translate the rotary motion of the wheel into reciprocatory motion of the block, a guide, means for supporting the guide either in a vertical or horizontal position, a saw in the guide, a pitman connected with the saw and means for attaching the pitman to the block, said means for supporting the guide in a horizontal position being in the form of a standard supported on the ends of the rod and having a seat swiveled on the upper end thereof.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
HERMAN BITTNER.
