UNITED 'ITES PATENT QFFrc.
ALBERT ALBERTSON, OE JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOTTLE-STOPPERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 18] ,615, dated August 29, 1876; application filed July 22, 1876. Y
7 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ALBERT ALBERTSON, of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Bottle-Stoppers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a central vertical section of my bottle-stopper, and Fig. 2 is a front view of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation thereof.
This invention relates to bottle-stoppers; and it consists in a stopper constructed in one piece, with an ear of elastic material, through which passes the wire bail used for binding the stopper into the mouth of the bottle, the various parts of the device being constructed and operating as hereinafter described.
In the annexed drawings, A designates a bottle, of glass or any suitable material, the neck of which is surrounded by a metal collar, B. To said collar the ends of bail O are pivoted. D is a stopple, constructed of indiarubber, and corresponding in form to the inner surface of the neck and mouth of said bottle. Said stopple is provided with an upper annular rim, d, which rests on the top of the mouth of said bottle when said stopple is inserted, and also with an ear, d through which passes the middle part of bail O. Said ear is made in one piece with the stopple D,
and is recessed underneath at 61 where it joins the main part of said stopple.
The operation of the device is as follows;
The stopple is first inserted in the mouth of bottle A until only rim or disk d and ear (1 appear above. The operator then grasps car al bending it at d and turns it over on top of the stopple. Bail O is dragged up and over with car al until it binds stopple D tightly into the mouth of said bottle.
To remove said stopple, reverse the movement of said ear and bail, when the elasticity of said ear and the hold afi'orded by rim d will facilitate the withdrawal of the stopple.
This stopple is especially adapted for use with bottles containing aerated or gas-generating liquids, in which case the force of the expanding gases Will often more than suffice to expel the stopper as soon as the pressure of the bail is withdrawn.
I have described the stopple as constructed of india-rubber; but it may be made of any similar elastic substance instead.
Stopple D is made hollow, and provided with a raised ring, d about its lower end. Said ring is designed to set into annular recess a on the inside of the neck of bottle A, niaking a tight joint.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- A bottle-stopper constructed in one piece, with a flexible ear, to which a binding-bail is attached, substantially as and for the purpose a set forth.
In testimony that 1 claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT ALBERTSON.
