Description

H. W. LILLY.
PLANES FOR CUTTING CIGAR LIGHTERS..
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
HARRISON W. LILLY, OF PITTSTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLANES FOR CUTTING CIGAR-LIGHTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 181,582, dated August 29, 1876; application filed March 15, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, H. W. LILLY, of Pittston, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Planes for Cutting Cigar-Lighters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure l is perspective views of the plane and its detached guard, partly broken away. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the stock, with the iron and its metallic bed detached therefrom. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of plane through theiron and its guttered metallic bed. Fig. 4 is an inverted view of the metallic guttered bed and iron 5 and Fig. 5 is the product or shaving of my plane adapted for a cigar-ligh ter, &c.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are designated by like letters.
This invention relates to a certain improvement in planes by which a curled tapering shaving is made, suitable as a cigar-lighter, &c.; and it consists of the combination, with the iron, of a guttered metallic bed, adapted for attachment to the stock and the iron to it, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawing, A refers to the stock, its upper surface being the sole. Let into the stock A is the metallic bed B of the iron, having its vertical longitudinal portion a screwed or otherwise secured to the stock, and provided with an opening, 12, to permit of access to the adjusting-screw d of the iron in regulating its cutting-surface. The horizontal surface a of the bed B is flush with the sole of the stock A, and provided with a diagonal gutter, a alongside of the cuttingsurtace of the iron, for the delivery, through the orifice c in the guard O of the plane or stock, of the curled tapering shaving formed by the iron. The gutter a is of a corresponding shape with the shaving cut by the iron, widening toward the orifice c in the guard 0. Upon the lower side of the bed or plate B is a frame, 6, tapering toward the converging end of the iron, and also inclined upon its upper surface, forming the bed proper, upon which the iron is adjusted, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. D is the iron. The stock A is provided with pointed projections ff, with which to fasten it in place while the shaving or lighter is being made, the strip or piece of wood from which it is out being passed over the iron by the attendant. Through this construction of bed the use of wedges and abutments is dispensed with, and the tool simplified and cheapened.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The iron D, in combination with the bed or plate B a to, having the iron-bed proper c and gutter (1 substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The iron D and bed B 0, having the gutter a in combination with the stock A and guard 0, having the orifice c, all constructed to operate as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I hereunto affix my signature in presence of witnesses.
HARRISON W. LILLY. Witnesses G. S. FERRIs, GEORGE S. FERRIs, J osEPH HILEMAN.
