G. w. WATTS TUBE HANGEB Filed Feb. 4, 1928 7 i 612; JY ZIZ za v A y July 21, 1931.

Patentecl July 21, 1931 UN iTEo STATES PArENr 'OFFICE GEORGE W. WATTS, OF WHITING, INDIAIN'A, ,ASSIGNOB TO STANDARD OIL COMPANY,

OF WEITING, INDIANA, A CORPORATION OF INDIANA 'I'UZBE ::memi

A lication filed rebruary i, 1928. Serial No. 251.931.

This invention relates to improvements in tube hangers or su ports. The invention willbe fully disclose in the following specification and accompanying drawings.

My improved tube hanger or support may be used, for example, for supportng the roof tubes in furnaces having flat' Suspended arches. For example, the improved (levce i "naysupport the roof tubes in an oil still.

In that form of device embodying the feai 'tures of my invention shown in the ;aceompanying drawings, Figure is a View' inside elevation, and Fig. 2 is a View taken as indicated by the line 2 of Fg. 1, As 'shown in the drawings, 10 may ndeate the flat Suspended arch or roof of a furnace, for example, it may be the top or roof' of the combustion chamber of an oil still. 11, 11 indicate the side walls of the. furnace.

It frequently is necessary or desrable to support one or more rows of tubes, such as oil tubes, just below the roof of afurnace. v

For example, I have here shown two rows of oil tubes,' the upper indicated by A and the lower by B. These tubes are here shown supported by my improved hangers. I preferably provide a set of hangers at each end of the tubes made of solid plates with holes provided to receive the ends of the tubes, and use by improved hangers at one or more points inter ediate the ends. hangers are s milar, I shall descrbe but one set. 4

' Each hanger comprises a substantially rectangular plate ,or bracket 12 prefe-ably cut out as. indicated by 12 and 12 to save weight and material. The plate 12 s preferabl of 'a'width substantially equal to the wi th of one tube and' one s ace between tubes. The upper end of the p ate 12 is provided with suitable holes 13 to. receive supporting pins .which ma be the pins 14 extending 'through the c annel members 15 above the roof 10. r

The lower end of each plate 12 is provided with two outwardly facing aligned semi-circular tube supports 16. Below the sem-c rcular su ports 16 is a centrally arranged crcular tube from the lower ends of the supports 16 by Since' the support 17, here shown as carriedmeans of the bars 18. The opposed faces of the semi-circular supports 16 are preferably .joined by the bar or web 19 to add strength.

The plates are mounted in alignment, as shown in Fig. 2, so that the semi-circular supports 16 of adjacent plates'co-operate to ca'ry a single tube 20 of the row A. The circular supports 17 carry the tubes 21 of the row B.

e While I have shown and described certain embodiments of my invention, it is to be untube of a horizontal row of tubes in one plane, and having parte co-operating with parte of ad acent holders arranged to carry the tubes of another horizontal row of tubes in another plane;

2. A furnace structure as claimed in clann 1 in which the tubes in one row are staggered *wth respect to those in the other.

-and aplurality of tube holders depending' I from said support, each holder carrying one 3. A tube hanger for snspending a bank of tubes in a furnace, the tubes in one row of the bank being staggered with respect to the tubes in another row of the bank, eomp'isinr, a plurality of b'ackets, each bracket being provided with a plurality of correspondinr tube engaging surfaces for supporting the tubes in different horizontal planes and different vertical planes, each of said brackets having a vertically extending portion adapted to e secured to and to depend from a portion of the roof structure of the furnace, said brackets, when secured to the roof structure and disposed in alignment with one another in substantially one plane transverse the axes of the tubes and in juxtaposition to one another, each supporting one tube independently of 'every other bracket in the same plane and another tube in cooperative conjunction with a contiguous bracket.

4. Means for suspending a bank of tubes in a furnacecomprising, a plurality of brackets,

each bracket being provided with a plurality of tube engaging surfaces for holding the tubes in difl'erent vertical and different horizontal planes, a furnace roof structure, and a support carried by said roof structure and supporting said brackets in substantially one plane Parallel the direction of the width and length of the brackets, said brackets' being disposed adjace'nt one another and one supporting surface of each bracket being complei mentary to an adjacent supporting surface' on the adjac ent bracket whereby the comple-.

mentary tube-supporting surfaces on adjacent brackets will engage substantially opposite surfaces of the same. tube for supporting the tube and holdingit in' place. u

5. In combination with a furnace roof, a tube hanger for suspending a bank of tubes in the furnace and beneath the roof thereof, including a bracket comprising a portion of greater width and length than the thickness thereof secured to and depending from the roof of said furnace and having a tube receiving opening through it in the direction of its thickness for securing and supporting one tube, a tube disposed through said openin V the Inarginal edge of said bracket above said opening being recessed and adapted to receive a tube partially therein, a second bracket of substantially identical shape, conformation and function disposed adjacent the first said bracket and in the plane thereof and having a narginal recess complementary to the marginal recess of the first said bracket, and a tube disposed through said complementary recesses and supported by said 'brackets in conjunction with one another, said tubes being staggered with respect to one another.

6. A furnace structure, including a plurality of rows of horizontal tubes; a support;

and a plurality of tube holders each 'depending from said support, one holder carrying one tube of a horizontal row of tubes in one plane and having parts co-operating with parts ot an adjacent holder arranged to Carry a tube of another horizontal row of tubes in .another plane, said tube holder being in. the

form of a flat plate apert-ured in the direction of the axes of the tubes, the apertures permitting the passage of gases through the plates. In witness whereof. I have hereunto set my hand this lst day of February, 1928.

GEORGE W. WATTS.
