ROLLING MILL GUIDE Filed Oct. 17, 1929 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 INVENTOR PER GUN/VAR PAL MGRE/V Patented July 14, 1931 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE PER GUNNAR PALMGREN, OF GOTTENBORG, SWEDEN, ASSIGNOR TO .AKTIEBOLAGET SVENSKA. KULLAGERFABRIKEN, OF GOTTENBORG, SWEDEN, A CORPORATION OF SWEDEN ROLLING MILL GUIDE Application filed October 17, 1929, Serial No. 400,209, and in Sweden October 23, 1928.
In many cases it is usual to providea guide before the rolls in rolllng m1lls in order to guide the material to the pass and to prevent it from twisting in the pass.
The present invention is for the purpose of avoiding the disadvantages experienced with guides now in use and consists malnly of an arrangement by which the guide is .kept open to allow the material to enter and is automatically closed after the material has been gripped by the rolls. By this means the entrance of the material into the guide is greatly facilitated, while a satisfactory guidance is obtained. This guide may be operated mechanically. Thenmpulse required to make the closing mechanism function is obtained by the working load on the rolls.
This present application is closely related to another application which I am filing concurrently herewith, this present application relating particularly to a design whereby the variation in load on the rolls of the rolling mill is utilized for actuating the guides. v
The accompanying drawings show'a pre ferred form of an embodiment of the inven-.
tion, in which drawings Figure 1 shows an axial section through a guiide, the rolls being shown in cross-section, an
Fig. 2 shows a cross-section through the same guide.
A pair of work rolls 15 and 16 are illustrated between which is to be passed the bar 14 for the purpose of reducing it. The purpose of the invention is to uide the oncoming portion of the bar as 1t is passing between the rolls.
The guide is represented as comprisin two halves denoted by the numerals 1 an 2 which are carried by bell crank levers 32 33 rotatable about a fixed pivot 34. The bell crank levers are connected to links 37 and 38 by means of joints 35 and 36. The links 37 and 38 are connected to a bar 41 through a joint 39. The bar 41 is fixed in a transverse beam 40 resting on the bearing housings 42 and 43 of the upper roll 15. When the material enters the pass the upper 34 thus closin 1. The combination with a mill provided I with rolls, of guides for the material adapted to open the close, and an element connected to and following the up and down movement of the rolls as the material enters or leaves the pass for closing and opening the guides.
2. The combination with a mill having a frame and provided with rolls and bearings supporting such rolls, of uides for the material adapted to open an close, and means associated with the bearings and adapted to follow the up and down movement of one of the rolls as the material enters or leaves the pass for closing and opening the guides.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name.
PER GUN N AR PALMGREN.
