Abstract

1,113,721. Papermaking. UNITED ENGINEERING & FOUNDRY CO. 14 Sept., 1965 [29 Sept., 1964], No. 39689/64. Heading D2A. [Also in Division B3]. A rolling mill or calender comprises from two to six stands, the first two 10, 11 Figs. 1 and 2 of which have working rolls 14, 15, supported in chocks 18, and back up rolls 16, 17 supported in chocks 22, the chocks being urged apart by piston assembles 25, 27. Entry guides 23, 24 for strip S are provided for each stand, and means are provided between the stands which detect any camber on the strip, and cause the piston assemblies 25, 27 on one end of the rolls to be actuated, so as to increase the pressure on the other side, so that the latter side of the strip is stretched, to thus correct the camber, and allow the strip to pass through guide 24. In operation, pressure is supplied to piston assemblies 25, 27 through control valves (33) (41) Fig. 5 (not shown), and the rolls are balanced. Once the strip enters stand 10 its load cell 42 is actuated to thus initiate the operation of the camber detecting means. If the strip is cambered the required valve (33) or (41) is actuated, and the rolls are tilted. When the strip passes through stand 11, its load cell 42 is actuated and the rolls are returned to a balanced pressure. The camber detecting means comprises a platform 40 Figs. 2 and 3, supporting a pair of opposite hand screwed shafts 43, 44, driven through a chain drive 47 by a motor 49, and frames 45, 46 which can be transversed along the shafts in opposite directions. Each frame carries two pivotable arms 52, 53 having strip engaging rollers 54, 55 at one end, and bell crank levers at the other end, connected to links 58, 59. Connected to the latter are rods 63, 64 which carry brackets 67, 68 at their ends, which brackets form part of a pneumatic hydraulic controller 69. When rollers on one side of the strip are displaced due to a camber, at least one of the brackets 67, 68 is displaced, and this movement is detected by controller 69, which then actuates valve 33, or 41 to tilt the rolls, and correct the camber. In a mill Fig. 6 (not shown) camber on the strip (S) as it leaves the mill to be sheared by a side trimming shear 72, is corrected as described above.
