This invention relates to cutting devices,
articularly shingle cutters such as are used By roofers' and has for its principal objects to provide an efiicient lightweight shingle cutter which will successfully cut asbestos shingles of different thicknesses and which can be easily carried about and secured to the' roof; to provide means for punching nail holes in .the shingles; and to provide for s1mplicity and cheapness of construction and compactness of design. The invention con: sists in the shingle cutter and in the construction, combination and arrangements'of parts hereinafter described and claimed.-

' My cutting device is particularly adapted or use in cutting asbestos shingles, although it may be used for other purposes. Said cutter comprises a stationary main Body member 1 provided adjacent to its ends with laterally rangement the cutter extending foot flanges 2 that extend far enough on opposite sides of said body member to hold the same in upright position. The foot flanges are provided intermediate their ends with notches 3 and at their outer ends with laterally extending upwardly ofi'set lugs 4 having n-ail holes 5 therein. The stationary body member 1 of the cutter is provided along its top with a longitudinal groove 6 adapted to receive a knife blade 7 which is removably secured in said groove b means of set screws 8. The upper edge of t e knife blade 7 projects above the upper ed e of the main body 5 with a beveled cutting edge. The body member is provided along one side with'a laterally extending flange portion 9 which serves as a support or table for the shingle being cut and to reinforce and stiffen the body member against cross-bending. 1.
Located above the body member 1 of the cutter is a knife carrier 10 that is pivotally supported at one end of said main body member for vertical swinging movement towards and away from the stationary knife blade 7. Mounted in a longitudinal roove 11 inthe underside of the pivoted kni e carrier 10 is a knife blade 12 which is provided along its lower edge with a longitudinal V- shaped cutting edge disposed in vertical alinement with the cutting edge of the stationary lower knife blade. The upper knife blade 12 may be adjustedrelative to the stationary knife blade 7 to enable the material to be out without damage thereto, by means of a series of adjusting screws 13 that are threaded into the pivoted carrier 10 with their lower ends in abutting relation to the top of said upper knife blade. The adjusting screws are locked in adjusted position by lock nuts 14; andthe upper knife blade 12 is locked in the desired adjusted position in the groove 11 in the pivoted knife carrier 10 by means of set screws 15 that arethreaded into said knife carrier and bear against the side of said knife blade.
The pivot 16 for supporting the vertically swinging knife carrier 10 is mounted on the upper end of a threaded stud 17, which is slidably mounted in vertically alined openings in two vertically spaced lugs 18 that project horizontally from one end of the body member 1. The stud is adjusted vertically in the openings in the lugs 18 by means of Q a nut 19 which is threaded on said stud be lug 20 sleeved on said stud between the lower nut. By this ar-,-
which bears against tween said lugs and is held against the upper by means of a coiled supporting spring lug and said adjusting rangement, the pivot 16 of the knife carrier maybe raisedand lowered for shingles of different thicknesses by turning the nut 19 on the stud 17 which is prevented from turning by reason of its pivoted connection with said carrier and the direction of its axis. The body member 1 is provided adjacent to the vertically adjustable pivot supporting stud 17 with a scale 21 which is graduated to give readings in fractions of an inch; and the stud 17 is provided with a collar 22 whose lower edgewhen opposite a graduation indicates that the pivoted knife carrier 10 is in proper adjustment for cutting shingles having a thickness corresponding to the thickness indicated opposite said graduation.
The pivoted knife carrier 10 is raised and lowered by means of a lever 23. provided with arms 24, 25 and 26. The arm 24 is provided with a socket adapted to receive one end of an opetating handle 27; the arm 25 is pivotally secured by means .of a horizontal pivot 28 to the upper end of a link-29 whose lower end is secured to the adjacent end of the stationary or main body portion of the cutter by means of a horizontal pivot pin 30; and the arm 26 is pivotally secured between a pair of' upstanding ears 31 on the free outer, end of the pivoted knife carrier 10 by means of a horizontal pivot pin 32 which extends through axially alined horizontal-openings in the ears 31 and arm 26. The pivoted knife carrier 10 is normally held in raised positionby means of a spring 33, the operating lever 23 and has its end portions coiled around the ends of the pivot pin 32 and hooked around the ears 31 on said knife carrier. With this arrangement; when the lever 23 is operated to SWlIl the knife carrier downward the coils of t e spring 33 are tightened and when the pressure is released said coils partially unwind and operate to return the knife carrier, operating lever and supporting link to their normal positions. The arm 25 of the lever 23 is provided with outstanding lugs 34, adapted in the raised position of the pivoted knife carrier to abut against similar outstanding lugs 35 on the adjacent free end of said carrier and thus limit the upward swinging movement thereof. The hereinbefore described cutting device has numerous advantages. Its light weight and compactness enables it to be easily carried up to and about the roof. It can be a roof and can be operated with littleefi'ort quickly and easily secured in position on the by reason of the powerful lever arran ement. It may be readily adjusted or shingles of different thicknesses; and it pro vides a wide opening between the knife blades; thereby permitting the shingles to be quickly and easily insertedtherebetween.
Obviously, the hereinbefore described cutting device admits of considerable modification without departing from the invention. Therefore, I do not wish to be limited to the precise construction shown and described.
What I claim is:
1. A cuttin device comprising a body por-' tion, a knife lade mounted therein, a knife carrier located above said body member and pivotally secured thereto, a knife blade mounted in said pivoted carrier for cooperknife blade onsaid body member, means mountedon said body memher and .operatively engaging the free end of the pivoted knife carrier to actuate the for varying the pivot point of said pivoted knife carrier, said means comprising a threaded stud slidably mounted on said body member and pivotally supporting said knife carrier,- ,-a spring for supporting said threaded stud, and a nut threaded on said stud and adapted to be held in abutting relation to said body member by the action of said stud supporting spring.
2. A shingle cutter comprising a body portion, a knife blade mounted therein, a knife carrier located above said body member and pivotally secured at one end thereto, a knife blade mounted in said pivoted carrier for co- I the pivoted knife carrier to actuate the latter, and means for adjusting the pivot point of said pivoted knife carrier, said means comprising a threaded stud mounted for vertical sliding movement on said body member and pivotally supporting said knife carrier, aspring mounted on said body member for supporting said threaded stud, a nut threaded on said stud .and adapted to be held in abutting relation to said body member by the pressure of said spring, a scale-on said body member, and means on said stud cooperating with said scale.
3. A portable shingle-cutter comprising a body portion provided adjacent to its ends with laterally extending foot flanges provided with outstanding upwardly offset perforated lugs, a knife carrier located above said body member and pivotally secured thereto adjacent to one end thereof, cooperating knife blades on the body member and said pivoted knife carrier, a link pivoted at its. lower end to said body member adjacent to the free end of said knife carrier, and an operating lever comprising an arm fulcrumed on the upper end of said link, an arm adapted to receive an operating handle, and an arm pivotally connected to the free end of said pivoted knife carrier.
4. A portable shingle cutter comprising a body portion provided adjacent to its ends with laterally,extending foot flanges provided intermediate their ends with notches and adjacent to their ends with outstanding upwardly offset perforated lugs, a knife carrier located above said body member and pivotally secured thereto adjacent to one end thereof, cooperating knife blades on said body member and said pivoted knife carrier, a link pivoted at its lower end to said body member adjacent to the free end of said pivoted knife carrier, an operating lever having an arm fulcrumed on the upper end of said link, an arm adapted to receive an operating handle, and an arm pivotally connected to the free end of said pivoted knife carrier, and a spring cooperating with said lever and the free end of said knife carrier for normally maintaining the latter in raised position.
5. A portable shingle cutter comprising a body portion provided adjacent to its ends with laterally extending foot flanges provided intermediate their ends with notches and adjacent to their ends with outstanding upwardly ofi'set perforated lugs, a knife carrier located above said body member and pivotally secured thereto adjacent to one end thereof, cooperating knife blades on the body member and said pivoted knife carrier, a link ivoted at its lower end to said body member adjacent to the free end of said knife carr1er, an operating lever'having an arm fulcrumed on the upper end of said link, an arm adapted to receive an operating handle, and

A portable shingle cutter comprising a body portion provided adjacent to its ends with laterally extending foot flanges, a knife carrier located above said body member and pivotally secured thereto adjacent to one end thereof, cooperating knife blades removably mounted on the body member and said 'pivoted knife carrier, a link pivoted at its lower end to said body member adjacent to the free end of said knife carrier, an operating lever having an arm fulcrumed on the upper end of said link, an arm adapted to receive an operating handle, and an arm pivotally connected to the free end of said pivoted knife carrier, a spring cooperating with said lever and the free end of'said knife carrier for normally maintaining the latter in raised position, means on said operating lever cooperating with means on the free end of said pivoted knife carrier for limiting the upward swinging movement of the latter, and a spring supported punch plunger slidably supported on said pivoted knife carrier.
7 A portable shingle cutter comprising a body portion, a knife carrier located above said body member and pivotally secured thereto adjacent to. one end thereof, cooperating knife'blades on the body member and said pivoted knife carrier, and means for adjusting the pivot point of said pivoted knife carrier, said means comprising a member slidably mounted on said body member and pivotally supporting said knife carrier,
a member adjustably mounted-on said slidable member, and a spring for supporting said slidable member with the adjustable body member.

A portable shingle cutter comprising a body portion, a knife carrier located above said body member and pivotally secured thereto adjacent to one end thereof for vertical swinging movement, cooperating knife blades removably secured to longitudinal meeting edges of said body member and said pivoted knife carrier, a link pivoted at its 2 relation to said link, and
