This invention relates to new and useful improvements in furniture over my co-pending application, filed August 23 1929, and
, bearing Serial No. 387,942, which may be readily converted into dressers, manicure tables and the like, after the manner of the above identified application.
One of the principal objects of the invention contemplates the provision and arrangement of an operating mechanism for this purpose, providing a support for either of the convertible articles of furniture.
Another object of the invention consists of auxiliary swingably mounted drawers occupying different positions with relatlon to each of the converted articles of furniture.
More specifically stated the operating mechanism is provided with a releasing ap- 2 paratus for the auxiliary drawers. 0
With the above and other objects lIl'VlGW, the invention further consists of the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanyin drawings and pointed out in the appende claims.
' In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of the article of furniture converted into a dress in table.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of a mani curists table formed by the combination and arrangement of the several parts formin myinvention.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the manicurists table. I
Figure '4 is a top plan view of the vanity or dressing table, partly broken away.
Figure 5 is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view taken through the manicurists table.
Figure 6 is a sectional view taken on line 6-6 of Figure 5.
Figure 7 is a horizontal sectional bottom view takenon line 7-7 of Figure 5.
Figure 8 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view taken on line 8-8 of Figure 5.
Figure 9 is a view similar to Figure 5, but taken through the device after it has been converted into a dressing table.
Figure 10 is a detail vertical sectional View taken on line 1010 of Figure 3.
Figure 11 is a detail vertical sectional view taken on line 1111 of Figure 9. 1
Figure 12 is a detail vertical sectional view taken on line 1212 of Figure 4.
. Figure 13 is a detail vertical sectional view taken on line 1313 of Figure 4.
Figure 1% is a detail vertical sectional view taken on line 14-14: of Figure 9.
Figure 15 is a fragmentary perspective view of an elevating mechanism for a disappearing top.
Referring to the drawings in detail wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates generally an article of furniture which may be more aptly termed a chest of drawers or cabinet having the drawers opening to both sides. The drawers 11 are restricted as to excessive shifting motion in either direction through the employment of stops 12, slidably mounted upon rod members 13, conveniently located within the article of furniture.
Lazy tong sections 14, foldably positioned within pockets 15, upon opposite sides of the article of furniture and above the uppermost of the drawers, occupy positions similar to that as disclosed in dotted lines in Figure 9 of the drawings. Supporting plates 16, arranged within both of the pockets 15, have one of the terminals of each lazy tong connection pivotally associated therewith. Guide members 18,'slidably mounted upon the supporting plates 16, are carried upon and shiftable with the meeting portions of adjacent lazy tong links whereby each of the lazy tong connections may be extended and retracted without swaying or sagging to occupy the positions shown in Figures 5 and 9 respectively. Arm members 19, carried by sleeve members 20, mounted upon rod members 21, are connected at their innermost ends with a remaining free extremity of the other lazy tong link for purposes to be better understood in the following description of the 1 invention.
A cover 22, serving the dual purpose of a top and mirror, is hingedly mounted, as at 23, to the upper portion of the article of furniture in a manner whereby said top may overlie the upper portion of the cabinet or occupy a position entirely free thereof. Connecting arms 24, establishing pivotal connection at their ends between ears 25 and 26, carried by the sleeve members 20 and covering 22 respectively, completes the necessary connection between the top and lazy tong sections for cooperative purposes to be later explained.
The support, alluded to 1n the foregoing, com rises a panel 27, a top rail 28 and depending leg 29. The other termlnals of each of the lazy tong sections are connected with cars 30 and 31, which are fixed and slidably mounted, respectively, upon rod members 32, the latter being conveniently arranged upon the inner sides of the legs 29 whereby the links of the lazy tong sections may be shifted to occupy the dotted line positions shown in Figure 9 of the drawings without binding. It is to be noted that the upper rail 28 of the support engages the under side of the covering 22 when the latter is employed as a table top and cooperates with said support in the extending and retracting thereof through the lazy tong sections. Supporting arms 33, carried upon the upper surface of the covering 22 and rearwardly disposed adjacent the innermost end thereof, accommodate the trunnions 34, carried upon the end walls of a form of rack 36, primarily designed for the accommodation of receptacles which may remain in said rack when the latter is shifted to occupy either of the positions shown in Figures 5 and 9 of the drawings inasmuch as the rack will remain in the same plane.
Side tables 37, of cabinet formation, are provided with spring hinge supports 38 mounting the tables upon the cabinet or chest of drawers 10 and to yieldingly induce said tables to occupy the positions shown in Figures 2, 3, 5, 7 and 8. Drawers 38 are slidably mounted within each of the tables andopen to the outermost ends thereof.
The tops 39 for each of the side tables are provided with extensions 40 designed for overlapping superimposed relation with the top of the cabinet proper to the extent best illustrated in Figure 4.
A latch finger 41, yieldably induced to normally occupy the position illustrated in Figure 12 of the drawings, that is, within the pocket or groove of a strike plate 42 in the upper rail 28, is released upon the extending of the latter to occupy thecFigure 2 position whereby the spring hinges 38'will operate to dispose the side tables outwardly and rearwardly in such manner that the manicurist may have access to the drawers 11. Precautionary measures are also taken to obviate spilling or knocking connections therebetween, such as off of articles carried upon the tops of the side tables, one by the arrangement of plunger cylinders 43 upon each of the tables having operative connection with the cabinet 'to check the retracting action of the spring 'the outermost end of the table 22 and an arm rest 46 interchangeably arranged for disposition upon either side of the table. An electric cord 47, passed through thetable 22 and through a conduit 48 is in electrical connection with a lamp 49 which may be swung to occupy the positions shown in Figures 1 and 2 055 the drawings to illuminate the table side and mirror side of the covering. When the article of furniture is converted into a dressing table or vanity, the side tables 37 are disposed in such manner that the drawers 38 therefor project for- *wardly to lend a more attractive appearance to the article of furniture and operable after the manner of a central drawer 50 projected through the panel 27 Attaching plates 51, arranged at intervals on the inner side of the panel 27, car- Ties channel members 52, inwardly projected therefrom in spaced parallelism to accominodate laterally and outwardly projecting fins 53 upon the drawer 50. The cabinet or chest of drawers 10 is provided with an opening 54 in one side thereof above the uppermost of the drawers 11 to accommodate the drawer 50 when the latter is disposed in the manner suggested in Figure 1. A disappearing top 55, slidably mounted within the upper portion of the chest of drawers or cabinet, is designed to occupy the elevated position shown in Figure 9 of the drawings to make room for the drawer 50. A closure member 56, swingably mount-. ed, as at 57, upon the cabinet or chest of drawers, is designed to gravitate to occupy the position shown in Figure 2 of the drawings when the drawer 50 is extended whereby the disappearing top 55 may occupy the Figure 8 position.
top 55 are simultaneously executed with theraising and lowerin of the covering 22, incident to the esta lishment of suitable pivoted links or the like, indicated at 61.
Pin trays or pockets 62, conveniently arranged upon the rail 28, are accessible to the user when the table top 22 is elevated to occupy the Figure 1 position.
As exhibited in many instances throughout the several views illustrating the present invention, diiferent forms of locking devices, catches and the like may be employed to prevent wobbling or distortion of the invention when converted into the different articles of furniture.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended'claims.
I-Iavin described the invention, what is claimed 1s:
1. A convertible article of-furniturecomprising acabinet, a top hingedly mounted thereon having a mirror upon one side thereof, a support having lazy tong connections with the top in order to sustain the latter in horizontal working position, side tables hingedly mounted upon the cabinet, a latch connection established between each table and the support and means for releasing the latch upon vextendin the support.
2. A convertible article of urniture comprising a cabinet, a top hingedly mounted thereon having a mirror upon one side thereof, a support having lazy tong connections with the top in order to sustain the latter in horizontal workin position side tables including drawers an having pivotal connection upon the sides of the cabinet, spring elements yieldingly urging said tables outwardly, latch connections established between the tables and support and means for releasing the latch upon extending the support from the cabinet. 3.
