SPRAY DEVICE Filed March 6. 1929 2 Sheets-Shee 2 lnvegor 0320.5.JQ22619 By @mwfih A ttorney Patented July 7, 1931 PATENT OFFICE OTTO L. JANSKY, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA SPRAY DEVICE Application filed March 6, 1929. Serial No. 344,842.
This invention relates to an improved spray device which is especially, but not necessarily, adapted for spraying paint and analogous liquids, and it has more particular reference to a structure which embodies a pressure supply head and compressed air conducting hose, an air inlet pipe, a fluid out let pipe and an eduction pipe, these being associated with a novel supporting device n for the paint container.
In carrying out the improved invention, I have evolved and produced a novel assembly constituting an adjustable support for the liquid container to be dispensed and this embodies a jar-like casing for the pipe constructed with the removable top carrying the pipe assembly. A predominating feature in the construction is found in the utilization of standardized attachments constituting covers for the paint cans, these covers being associated with the casing and detachably connected thereto,
whereby to accommodate cans of varying diameters. Other specific structural features of the invention will become more readily apparent from the following description and drawings.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is an elevational view of the sup- 39 porting bracket and the pipe casing with the cap structure and piping assembly removed. Figure 2 is a sectional and elevational view of-the complete structural organization con-- V an air passage which communicates with the stituting the working dispenser.
tional views taken on the planes of the horizontal lines 33 and 4-4 respectively of Figure 2.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of a supporting bracket.
The entire structure may well be seen in Figure 2, wherein it will be observed that the reference character 6 designates an L-shaped supporting bracket. The vertical leg or arm 7 of this is formed with a plurality of aper tures. The horizontal arm 8 is provided with an adjustable set screw 9 having an appropriate operating knob and swivel head for engaging the removable paint can 10.
5c The paint can is a stock part and constitutes Figures 3 and 4 are transverse cross sec-- no portion of this invention. The important feature to be noted in connection with this paint can is the disc-like cover plate 11, therefor. This comprises a metal disc having openings formed in the center for passage of 1 pipes to be hereinafter described and it is formed with the thickened marginal depending flange 12.
In practice, various cover plates will be provided, in order to accommodate cans of difierent diameters. In each instance, however, the external diameter of the flange 12 will be standardized to adapt it for use in connection with the other parts of the structure.
Associated with the cover plate 11 is a jar-like casing 13 of appropriate material. This is provided at its bottom with an outwardly offset annular flange 14 which embraces and is fastened to the flange 12 by way of retaining screws 15. Formed integrally with the flange 14 is a guide 16 in which is slidably mounted the upstanding arm 7 of the bracket 6. The casing 13 has a reduced screw threaded neck 17 on which a screw-threaded cap is removably fitted. This cap carries the pipe assembly. For in- I stance there is an attaching arm 19 having a circular flange 19 depending from its free end portion in which is inserted-the upper end of a tubular handle 20 to the lower end of which is coupled the air supply hose 21.
The handle 20 is, of course, provided with air hose 21 and said handle is detachably clamped in the flange 19 by a set screw 20. A valve A is provided for controlling. the
passage of the air'through the handle.
In addition there is an air inlet pipe'22 of general U-shaped design having a long branch depending through the casing. 13 and extending downwardly through an opening in the cover plate 11 into the interior of the paint can 10. Associated with this is an eduction pipe 23 having its discharge end portion seated in a notch in a bracket 24, carried bythe attaching arm 19. The other end of the pipe 23 communicates with the air passagein the handle 20. The reference numeral 25 designates a fluid outletpipe: r
t clamping said can in the cover which extends down through the arm 19 through an opening in the cap 18 and through an opening in the cover plate 11 into the interior of the paint can 10 where it terminates in spaced relation above the bottom thereof.
The entire arrangement is assembled as seen inFigure 2. The member 13 is threaded into the cap 18 and the cover plate 11 is secured by set screws 15 in the flange 12 with the pipes 22 and 25 extending-therethrough. The pipe 22 is sufficiently flexible to permit the free end thereof to be insertedin the opening provided therefor in. the cover plate 11 when said cover plate is being positioned. The bracket 6 is adjusted on the member 13 as desired, andthe can 10 is then inserted 'inthe cover plate 11. Then, the screw 9 is engaged with the bottom of the can for plate and the device is ready for use.
The invention is noted for its compactness and convenience in arrangement of parts and the economical construction and relative a sociation thereof. It is regarded as a practical contribution to the art, is capable of 'fulfilling the requirements of an invention of this'class in a more satisfactory manner and 'is otherwise distinguishably different from outlet pipe extending downwardly through the cap and an air eduction tube operatively associated withthe fluid outlet pipe for elevating the fluid from the receptacle, comprisprising a substantially cylindrical member detachably connected to the cap, saidmem- 'berbeing open at its ends, a cover plate detachably securedto the lower end portion of the memberhaving an opening-therein for the passage ofthe fluid outlet pipe, a mar-- ginal flange depending fromthe cover plate for the reception of the receptacle, and means mounted on the member and engageable with the receptacle for removably clamping said receptacle against the cover plate.
2. Means for operatively mounting a fluid containing receptacle on a pneumatic spraying unit otthe'typehaving a screw cap and a fluid outlet pipe extending downwardly through the cap and an air eduction tube operati'velyg asso'oiated with the fluid outlet pipe for elevating the fluid from the receptacle, comprising a substantially cylindrical member having a threaded neck for threaded engagement with the cap for detachably mounting the member thereon, said member being open at its ends, an outwardly offset flange on the lower end of the member, a cover plate disposed within the flange and including a depending marginal flange, means for detachably securing the coverplate in position, said cover plate having an opening therein for the passage of the fluid outlet pipe, said cover plate adapted for the reception of the receptacle, and meansfor removably securing the receptacle in operative engagement with the cover plate.
3. Means for operatively mounting a fluid containing receptacle on pneumatic spraying unit of the type having a screw cap and a fluid outlet pipe extending downwardly through the cap and an air eduction pipe operatively associated with the fluid outlet pipe for elevating the fluid from the receptacle comprising a. substantially cylindrical member having a threaded neck for threaded engagement with the cap for detachably mounting the member thereon, said member being open at its ends, an outwardly ofiset flange on the lower end of the member, a cover plate disposed within the flange and including a depending marginal flange, means for detachably securing the cover plate in position, said cover plate having an opening therein for the passage of the fluid outlet pipe, said cover plate adapted for the reception of the receptacle, and means for removably securing the receptacle in operative engagement with the cover plate, the last named means including an angular bracket slidably adjustable on the first named flange and having one end disposed beneath the receptacle, means for securing the bracket in adjusted position, and a screw threadedly mounted on said one end portion of the bracket and engageable with the receptacle for clamping same against the cover plate within the second named flange.
In testimony whereof I afix my signature.
OTTO L. JANSKY.
